Power connector

Hi all,

Could someone who has a rift already please help me out with the following...?

Firstly, has anyone tried powering the OR with just USB - i.e. not connecting a DC power plug? USB 3.0 connectors should be able to supply enough current.

If it doesn't work, then can anyone let me know what type of DC power plug the control box accepts? Specifically, I need the size, and the polarity (i.e. which polarity the center is (+ve is the de-facto standard)) of the connector. Alternately, if someone can point me at the correct connector on http://uk.rs-online.com/web/c/connector ... wer-plugs/ or a specific standard (e.g. EIAJ-02). I plan to make a USB-A(M)->USB-A(F)+DC adapter.

Thanks,

Ian

That was indeed the source of the idea - to provide similar functionality but without actually modifying the OR (and breaking warranty and possibly the device itself). My assumption had been that (in a non-modified OR) the DC-IN would only be necessary if not enough current was provided over USB - it sounds though like the DC-IN always needs to be connected.

My thinking is that rather than connecting Ground and +5V in the OR, this could be done in a little external dongle. That way no changes are needed to the OR, and the dongle could be not used when a laptop/PC doesn't provide enough current over USB.

Note: there appears to be an implicit assumption that both the USB and DC-IN are using the same Ground - this isn't necessarily the case if they aren't tied together. Of course, the OR control box may tie the grounds together itself - I don't have one so can't look.

Exactly what I was thinking of - and way cheaper than I could make. Please do!

Hey Spyro - any update on this? Wondering whether I should buy one or not...
