That's a pretty neat display, i hadn't seen that one before. And by the way, you don't want a 7" screen. At least not with the lenses the rift uses, those waste too much of the screen.

Here is the screen that i knew about, that is actually a bit higher resolution:

This one was shown since 2012 i think.
Lets hope that these screens become mass produced and that Oculus can get their hands on them. Because if they decide to go with LCD instead of OLED, then they better make up for it with some extra pixels! (and lets hope these panels can be driven at 75Hz or more, if they decide to stick with LCD)

It's interesting that they are calling it "quad hd" which is technically correct compared to 720p, but didn't they already call 4k "quad hd" also? I guess they should start calling 4k "Full Quad HD" (since they called 1080p "full HD")

I can't wait for the first phone that has this in, and I sincerely hope the consumer rift has a similar display in it!

5.5" would be best though. Then you will get the size and look of the HD prototype and not like the Dev Kit. The size itself doesn't matter as optics will do the rest.

Somebody hack this thing into the devkit and make a video please! 😉

Yep, I really expect and hope that the consumer version has such a display as I've already said: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=1770&start=60#p44275

I hope that one year from now about now these things will be "normal" enough to consider including in the final version.
If the price is right, the only thing speaking against it would be the power required to render at that resolution, but by then Nvidia will hopefully have already released their new Maxwell GPUs with AMD/ATI doing the same and they can always use an upscaling solution from lower res for rendering purposes on low power PCs.

5.5" 2560x1440 in a phone doesn`t make sense.

I guess the OR guys talked to LG and said: There is a need for 2560x1440 on 5,5" now. VR is the next big thing. We`ll sell millions of Rifts next year. Wanna produce for us?

5.5" is perfect for the phablet trend that's been going on for a while.

Edit:
Also, higher resolutions are good for better marketing, especially against the whole Retina Display thing going on.

And it's also important for displaying the characters of various Asian languages, as shown in another thread.

This bothers me a bit. Resolution is very important, but people overlook a lot of little details. Maybe they are details that only visual tech enthusiast would be aware of.

For example, the Nexus 7 HD. They called the screen a retina display killer. I bought one and there's something off about the screen. Little blotches in the darker areas where it bleeds black to light when playing the same video compared on a retina ipad. It's a little like compressing a dark color photograph into a gif with fewer colours.

Anyways, that's why things like screen door is more bothersome to people like me than other people.
