Augmented Reality

One of the first things I thought of when I discovered the Oculus Rift was, "What if we put cameras on the front, routed the feed through some post processing software that puts an interactive HUD on top of the video, then routed it to the screen of the Rift?" Wouldn't that be pretty sweet? We could have semi-transparent applets in our vision that help us out with things. Like instead of looking at a 2D map for Google Maps, the camera's detect the road you are driving on, and then places the destination path on the road itself! Or you could have a virtual pet; not only would it be pretty cool to edit your pet to make it 1/3 cat, 1/3 dragon and 1/3 cyborg, but it would teach kids responsibility without risking the life of your deranged monster of the underworld. You could also have a TV app that assigns a virtual TV to a blank space on your wall... Or a non-blank space... Just like virtual reality, the possibilities are endless.
Although there are lots of hurdles to jump over when designing something like that, does anybody have any cool ideas of what they would use their Augmented Rift for?

For me, all I want is the ability to pull up a perfect semi-transparent monitor on my desk.

You could probably hack it now pretty easy-
Just the 3D video background, with a 3D-object overlay animated based on native oculus rotation and hydra tracking.

I want to see it at 60fps with no drift- once that first believable high-quality benchmark hits, I'll be interested in much much more for sure. 😃

hint: DRAGONS EVERYWHERE!!

That would definately be hacked eventually. Imagine if schools start implementing it for the classrooms, then someone hacks it to put porn on the monitor, and then the monitor runs around the room.
The games would definately be pretty awesome.

The only problem I see is that you will need a wide view-angle camera.

It has begun. That was exactly what I was looking for. Or rather, the birth of a AR and OR hybrid.

An AR Rift will cause a worldwide melon shortage.

Why are we not funding this?

Concept doesn't mean it will happen, but...
