First 3D 360° video for Oculus Rift

It's with pleasure that I present you the first 3d 360° video for oculus rift.

We were inspired by one of the first movies of the history: L'Arrivée d'un train à La Ciotat
(Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat).

It is an 1895 French short black-and-white film directed and produced by Auguste and Louis Lumière.
Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat is considered to be the first motion picture in modern history.

The movie shows a train arriving at a passenger station. Popular legend has it that, when this film was shown,
the first-night audience fled the cafe in terror, fearing being run over by the "approaching" train :

I live near La Ciotat, so we went on the scene of the shooting (Which exists and works always)
and positioned our camera in the same place as the original movie :

No problems here! This was excellent!

The camera seems to be at about 4 and a half feet high though so when standing up, the effect is a little strange with all these tall people walking around, but sitting down it isn't as obvious.
More than anything else I've tried on the Rift though, this does highlight the low resolution, with this being a real-life scene, the pixellation does come across as quite limiting. Still, very immersive!

Edit: also, I had to adjust the horizontal distance to be 69 as opposed to 72 or even 70 for it to be comfortable for me, but I suspect this will differ with everyone.

Interesting!
Not perfect yet, but it's a good first step. 3d was a bit off at some parts of picture and hi-def will definitely improve the overall quality.

Device -> Layout -> SidebySide
----------> Distortion -> None
---------->Tracker -> Oculus Rift

Any special reason for recommending Distortion to be off? To me it looks much better with usual Barrel distortion (otherwise the world looks distorted when I turn my head).

With the new download link it worked as it should : )
Really nice even though there were some apparent issues, especially with the brightness in different regions.
I also used Distortion since it seemed to give a better effect. Ansyone know if its possible tu use some kind of neckmodel with VR player? Right now its really strange when looking up and down..

Great homage to the Lumière brothers ! As a French guy myself I'm really happy you did this at La Ciotat. 🙂

I really liked this.

I used VLC as the player and it looked better with barrel distortion for me too.

The picture did lag a little if I turned quickly but part of that may be that I ran it on my old laptop at work.

I'm quite looking forward to seeing how it goes on my good PC with a GTX780 card.

I really look forward to the next video.

Perhaps out in a field with some cows or sheep wondering about? That's be quite relaxing and a nice change of pace from zombies and rollercoasters 😉

Great job !
(bad luck for the light though, usually this part of France is very sunny 😉 )
pretty good result for a system using "only" 12 cams
as someone said, should be even better with a bit of contrast/brightness normalization

Do you know that swiss project (their prototype has one hundred small cams) :

(Dunno what they are becoming now)
