I made a post with a video over here: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=552

This is the slightly refined demo:
http://robotloveskitty.com/Sandbox.zip

Flying Lessons:

Calibration:
Works by just calibrating the left side, 4 red spheres will appear at each calibration point.
Press Left #4 to start calibration
Arm straight up, L4
Arm Forward, L4
Arm by side, L4
Arm out at shoulders, L4
hands should now be synced up

Left #1 = toggle flying/walking mode
Holding still reorients your body.

Walking:
Left stick = move and turn

Flying:
Your hands are the source of propulsion, they will pull at your body from their location and rotation.
Thumbsticks = Thrust Direction for that hand
Triggers = close hands for speed boost

Have fun!

EDIT: Updated with new instructions (video flying lessons still uploading when i made this update)

I can't figure out how to control it. It sounds simple written down, but it just doesn't seem to work that way.

Maybe you really NEED a Rift to be able to process how the controls work.
  • yeah... i can't make it do much of anything without wearing the Rift. With it on, I can fly pretty much however I want :D

Hey man, thanks for sharing! It seems pretty awesome when I'm actually flying, but I can't seem to grok the control scheme here.

    basically,

Stand up, hydras to shoulders, hit button 4.. then hit left button 1 to toggle to flying mode, after that the only way I seem to be moving is if I hit the thumbsticks, which does some crazy rotations that I'm not quite understanding! you say the hands should pull at the body without any other input? If i toggle flying and just move my arms / triggers, nothing seems to happen?

    Thanks!

also the calibration at shoulders step for me seems odd if i'm sitting down, the hands snap to the bottom of the player rectangle, if i'm standing they appear roughly where I'd expect in front of my face.

yep, for both controllers in each hand.
    dbuck wrote:

you mean the top of the player box? that's where they should go.

Thats correct, think of it like this:
You have 4 rockets on each hand at the top, bottom, front, back. Thumbsticks control the thrust of those rockets. Closing your hands increases the thrust to the forward rockets (this is a bug, it should increase both forward and backward thrust)

Your body has physics on it, and the trust is applied at the hands position. Try flying with just one hand to get the feel, then you can balance it out with the second hand for more control.

Ok, I got to flying, it's a bit strange, I essentially had to look STRAIGHT up at the ceiling with my arms all the way above my head to get it to work?! and the horizon roll was a bit disorienting

but that's pretty damn cool :)

Nope, If i'm sitting down and trigger the config at my shoudlers, I can't see my hands unless I look down, if i'm standing up and trigger the config at my shoulders they appear to show up in the right position.

I figured it out now, it's more about the orientation and placement of the hands in relation to each other than about the hands in relation of the body! my initial gut reaction was to 'Frankenstein' and expect to fly in the direction of my gaze, which when you do that and hit the thumbsticks, you just faceplant into the ground haha... instead of to tilt the hydras to steer.. Once you figure it out its awesome!

Also one more little thing we need to add in, which seems to be an issue in everyone's demos so far. we need a 'Reset' for the player orientation with respect to the rift orientation, for the cases where you start the game and the rift is pointing a different direction from the screen/hydra.. I need it for mine too, it's a pain to restart because I forgot to point the HMD in the same direction as the screen at startup.

I'm apparently not smart enough to figure out the control scheme for this. As others have said, moving the left or right joystick just rotates me around crazily. I end up lying on the floor with my head sideways.

Can someone please explain to me like I'm five?
  • o_o maybe I should make a flying lessons video?
I have flying down to the point where it just feels very natural to me. And the hands as thrusters method gives you complete control. Its basicly the Flight Sim of "Super Hero" flying... where as a lot of other implementations seem more like the Arcade Version.

Can anyone else get around like I can? or have I just made something that only I can use?

I can, after i figured out it's more about where the hands are in relation to each other, than where the hands are in relation to the body

this rocks hard man! i thought i had my vr "sea legs" but this one made me a little dizzy when i titled backwards and did a backwards loop. i like how you can twist/spiral while going straight by twising your wrist. cool stuff.

  • O_o this is in Unity and it's only like 9mb?

15 minutes later, and I'm still stumped on the controls. ):

Maybe a tutorial video is in order?

I have some ideas about how to make control easier.

Let's pretend we're Ironman (though without thrusters on his feet). Now let's visualise the thrusters on the hands and things become much more intuitive.

Think of the part in the Ironman movie where he's learning to fly his suit and is bouncing around the lab. The visual feedback as to which thruster is firing and with what intensity should make for a much more natural control scheme.

Yeah, I can do that, should look pretty cool :D

I think the real problem is that people don't take into account their person. If you had super strength, and held a rocket straight out in front of you, when it goes off you don't fly up into the air with it. You would spin around backwards in crazy circles.

The thrust is applied to your physics object at the position and direction the hands are in.

ok its very cool, but why do the thrusters only thrust you in one direction? i keep flying left thus throwing me into a spin

I get the feeling that everyone is interpreting the verbal description of the controls and how the physics work slightly differently :P I think that once the thrusters are visible the control scheme will "click" after just a little experimentation.

Visual cues can make all the difference.

I have a strong desire for an Ironman flightsuit simulator now :) Or something like Shogo: Mobile Armor Division.

I tryed it yesterday, but the controlls dont work for me. I have not the feeling, that i controll anything... :(

Maybe with visualisation of the power... ;)

But the Reason for this post:

    Best video tutorial ever

Actually only took me a little bit of fiddling around to start flying even without having a rift. Fun stuff!

20 minutes of trying -- registering hands at shoulders with a click of 4, then pressing 1, then holding hands straight overhead and... nothing. All I can get is a roll, roll, roll when I push the thumbsticks. If I put it back into walk mode I can stroll slowly around the stage, but when in flight mode it doesn't seem to matter where I register the hands or where I put them afterwards. I can get the hands to appear over my head, or at my feet, but it doesn't seem to affect how it behaves.

This was/is my experience. Kinda frustrating because it looks like fun.
  • After demoing this a few times to people, i've watched most people pick up the controls and get it right away, and others struggle to maneuver.

Still trying to pinpoint what makes it intuitive for some, and confusing for others :|
That and there is a possibility its a bug :)

The current version I have has better calibration, but its still a very rough demo... I'll put up a new version once its more refined.

I tried your demo today with my Rift and Hydra. It is not easy to maneuver but a lot of fun! Here is some feedback:

    1. Thee is no in-demo function to reset everything.
    2. I could not quit the demo except killing it.
    3. Sometimes after flying around a while my body was rotated relative to my had. Only a restart fixed it.
    4. Flying like superman worked best (hands up, looking straight up) but gave me some pain in the neck after a while. I could not figure out how to fly reliably when just sitting and looking forward.
    5. I could not easily rotate when giving thrust forward with one hand and backward with the other.
    6. Walking mode is too slow!
    7. Sometimes when in walking mod I could only rotate but not translate. Only a restart fixed it.

I see grate potential in your demo! Keep up the good work.

    Cheers, Jonek.

PS: This was the first Rift demo that made me a little dizzy.

Yah, same place as others, spinning in space.

    then I figured this out...

held hands to shoulder, pressed 4 with both hands.
    pressed 1 on left hand,

    put hands straight up
    look straight up
    press forward on both joysticks
lightly squeeze LT and LT on both controllers. (the harder you squeeze the faster you go, so start slow)

for me it seemed like the game wanted to fly like a rainbow. so I was constantly lean back with hands and controllers to counter act the roll forward.

if I had to guess, I would think the roll forward is from pressing forward on the left joystick. I say this because when i'm not flying, pressing forward on left joystick causes the camera to pitch down.
  • Once the Ludum Dare is over (monday) I'll put the latest demo up and flying lesson video :)

Cool! And I'm looking forward to the end of the Ludum Dare for another reason, too: after the dare is over, they are offering Unity Pro at 10% off, and I'm taking the plunge. :-) ( unless someone has some advice on how to get an even better deal?)
