There's great news! Version 0.2 is already completed! I have many of the issues in Version 0.1, such as adding an OVR skybox, allowing you to exit using the escape key, making the menu hand smaller and more realistic, adding a left menu hand, making the racket movement much more realistic, fixing the how to play typo, and changing the music to a more fast-paced style. There are also many other small improvements that are in this version. Please tell me more things that I could improve for the next version! Your feedback is much appreciated, as I'm only an amateur developer so there are still so many things for me to learn. I hope you guys enjoy VR Open version 0.2! 8-)

Well first I just want to say hello, and happy new year to the entire Oculus community! Also, I want to give a special thanks to all of my fellow developers out there, experienced or amateur. 2013 has been a year full of unique and totally awesome experiences for the Oculus Rift, and I can't wait to see what's to come in the future. This is only just the beginning of a revolution that will change the entire world. I hope you're all as pumped for 2014 as I am, because what's to come will be nothing short of extraordinary. May all of your New Years resolutions come true, and more. 🙂

Now, If any of you guys have checked out the Works in Progress thread recently, then you might remember reading a post about a virtual reality tennis game. Well, I'm happy to report that I am finished with version 0.1. Lately, I've been working on a project called VR Open, my first-ever full Oculus game with native Razer Hydra support. Alhough there have been some struggles along the way, the experience of being able to play tennis while sitting on my living room sofa without getting fatigued is really incredible. VR Open is the first-ever virtual reality tennis simulation game built specifically for the Oculus Rift and Razer Hydra motion controllers, and I invite everybody to give it a go when you have finished reading this post. However, there are some things that you may want to consider before you put on your Rift.

1. You need to either own the Sixense Razer Hydra motion controllers, or purchase them off of their website.
2. VR Open requires at least 2 feet of space in front of you in order to play the full game.
3. The only current mode is Classic mode.
4. If you're a lefty, you're out of luck for right now. I promise though that in the coming weeks, lefty support will be added.
5. You have to have an Oculus Rift Development Kit. (DUH)

Now that you've read through the important information, here's how to play Classic Mode.

How to Play:

1. Move right Hydra controller to move racket
2. Use left Hydra stick to move self
3. Use right Hydra stick to turn self
4. Hit as many balls into the singles zone as you can in 60 seconds (you only have 5 seconds to hit each ball before it's destroyed)

To navigate the menu:

Reach out your right hand and put it through the ball of the menu option you'd like to select 🙂
(This may take some time getting used to)

At the moment the gameplay made it unplayable in any reasonable manner.

1. The skybox is off and double vision, but this seems common for developers new to Unity design.
2. The selection hand is not 1:1 movement and the scale is way off. It turns into Miley Cyrus's giant foam finger when you try to bring it to your face.
3. The racket's alignment is all over the place. If I press Start and move to align my hand with the racket, it radically changes positions. Again, there's no 1:1 movement making play attempts more about luck than skill.
4. Does not seem to be an intuitive way to exit the game. ESC key did not work, but alt-enter did reduce it to a window to close out.
5. I believe there's a typo in the How To instruction saying you use the left Hydra to control the racket.

I'm not sure how much work is needed to make this playable, but it seems to need a bit. I do like the idea of a Tennis game and would love to see a VR version of VR Tennis 2K sometime in the future.

Well, thanks for your response!

1. I will fix the Skybox in the version to the OVR one, but it's not a big deal as you barely even look at it
2. The hand is way too big, I will change that
3. I'm not sure what you mean about the racket because I've tried it over a hundred times and never had one issue
4. You just go to the menu screen and touch the exit ball. You can do the method you're saying if you're in the middle of a game, otherwise just wait the remaining seconds until you get to the menu.
5. I found the typo last night after I uploaded the game, and I need to fix that. It's not a huge deal but it will be fixed in the next version.

nukemarine, I have made my best attempt to fix all of the issues that you have presented to me with version 0.1. Version 0.2 is at the top of this post. 🙂 Hopefully it is somewhat playable now. Btw, nice Miley Cyrus reference 🙂

Hey Drash, thank you for your interest in it! Sorry for the late response, but could you try version 0.3 and give me your honest opinion? If so that'd be sweet...especially coming from an amazing dev. 😄

Just got a chance to give this a shot.

1) I had trouble finding the Windows 32 bit version because some of your download links are switched around. In fact I think each link goes to a download for a different platform. I usually try 32-bit first despite having 64-bit Win8 just because there used to be better compatibility with the Oculus integration that way.

2) Upon firing up the Windows 32-bit version, I found that the Hydra was not responding at all. I tried the Hydra in a different Hydra-enabled demo and it's working fine there. I was about to give up when I decided to try the 64-bit Windows version, and surprise! It works there. Strange! So just be aware that Hydra functionality seems to be completely broken in your 32-bit Windows version. In case it helps, I am not running anything special in the background like Vjoy or Sixense Motion Creator.

3) Once I got going in the 64-bit version, I realized that the scale feels off. The hands appear to be 8 feet long. (Intentional?) The board in front of me with the different options also feels overly big.

4) Once starting Hydra hand movement, I noticed that their movement is really sensitive, not 1:1 at all. I immediately lost track of my hands and had no idea where they went. I restarted and then was verrrry careful not to move my hands after starting them. Then I was able to reach out and select an option.

5) In each segment of the main menu and in the game itself, the Hydra hands have to be "restarted" every time. Not sure if intentional but this may not be obvious to everyone, especially when the game starts and there are tennis balls en route.

6) The scale of the court seems off too. It feels kind of small, like a batting cage rather than a tennis court.

7) Again the rackets are super sensitive to translational motion, and could probably do with a sensitivity multiplier so that the movements are more 1:1.

😎 I personally feel that the tennis ball(s) bounce too fast, too fast for me to keep up with even if my Hydra were responsive and moving 1:1 with my arms.

9) When facing directly forward aligned with the hydra base station (and I haven't rotated my virtual body), my racket is angled to the right in front of me. I would have expected the racket to be held like I'm holding the hydra controller, and definitely would be a lot more intuitive that way.

10) When rotating the Hydra controller's orientation, it seems to rotate the racket in the middle of the racket instead of at the handle where the hand/wrist would be.

With all the issues above combined, I wasn't able to hit any balls at all. 😞

Great start, especially with the menu front-end and gameplay elements in place. Just need to work out Hydra implementation a bit and you're almost there! Looking forward to updates!

Drash, thank you tons for the advice. I have fixed the download links...that was my bad. And how do you add a multiplier to the Hydra sensitivity? I'm unsure of the code for that. The hands in the beginning were not supposed to be 1:1 because the balls are too far away. I will definitely change that. And for the balls, would raising their height help? 0.4 will hopefully be out by next week if not this weekend. 😄

Btw, Titans of Space was amazing. xD
