A great job, and pure labour of love - but one of the reasons why it is so on the QT is obvious - Ubisoft and Paramount (and Universal) are not the happiest about their IP assets being used like this - No matter how much of a fan project, (yes the original build (Desktop) was given some passes by Paramount originally). All the more so when Ubisoft are trying to promote their Bridge Crew simulator that is not seeing the kind of take-up they had been promised!

I've often wondered why Oculus hasn't paid a lot of money to have places like Hogwarts or other currently-popular scenes created in great detail for users to visit in the Gear VR and Rift.  It may not make a ton of money but if it looks good enough, and i'm sure it can be done, it would be the best demo by far.

You answered your own question there  😄

The reality of using "actual props" designs and stages from the films and television series for re-creation in a VR app, comes with a major issues of paying for IP, and the use of specific resources to create an end result.

Take the Star Trek universe - Paramount is very strict who gets to play with the assets, and how they can be used. It was easier for Ubisoft to tie up the deal to use the JJ Star Trek film craft interiors, than to get the Desilu Productions / Paramount / Universal exec's in a room to even discuss creating an original Star Trek bridge.

Just think of the six production houses you would have to have in a room to do a Harry Potter (original) or Harry Potter (new Frightening Beasts) discussion.

All that for a VR app that you have already admitted would have a lower than expected ROI stream.

Well i understand there would be an initial loss, but if there is to be "1 billion users"...

Yeah, "if there is to be 1 billion users... by 2020" then there will have to be "Big Picture" projects like this - projects that appeal to the Joe-in-the-street to try "good VR"! And that is the rub. If you are expecting GO and SC to be the spearheads of the "1 billion" users by 2020, then the performance, and ROI of projects will not be as big as was envisaged if we were driving the audience to High-end VR. I am sorry, but a 360' spline round the USS Enterprise rendered interior, is not the same as  traversing round a fully navigateable immersive environment!

Remember this was meant to be about more than just "good enough VR"!

I guess using copyrighted material is difficult. But I think Oculus missed out on creating spaces that allow you to be transported to a different home.

I've been playing with Steam Home and you can spend hours customizing your home. But I wish there were spaces like a space station with functional components. Much like how the Enterprise D here is functional. The idea is you can have you dream fantasy home. you can sit on the couch and watch YouTube in this little home of yours. You can invite friends.

I think Steam Home is moving in the right direction in this regard. All they need is to provide a default home like a functional space station.

If initial loss were a real concern with Mainstream VR, then both Steam and Oculus Home would be empty lol

So yes, you are correct. I imagine that this is more about focusing priorities than anything else. So many VR projects, so little time!

Yes I think you may be right. Though I think in trying to control the delivery of the content, you have to martial the resources you have - no matter how deep the pockets, and pick what you feel are going to be hits, like the investment into games (great projects like Robot Recall, but not all can be hits though.... Rockband VR!)

Your not the first one I have heard prise the direction of Steam Home - I wonder if OVR and WinMR will emulate this?
