No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way - Cate Archer lives again in VR!

Hi folks!

No One Lives Forever 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. In my mind, there was only one way to make it better (apart from a much awaited sequel, that sadly looks like it's never going to happen): a total VR conversion!

The VR community has given a lot to me. Amazing mods like Doom 3 BFG - VR, Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast VR, the MotherVR mod for Alien: Isolation, the very existence of affordable devices like the Rift and the Vive: I really wanted to give something back. I also desperately wanted to play NOLF2 in VR, and... nobody else was doing it, so I decided to step in.

In honor of the traditional bent for acronyms that pervades the NOLF universe, I couldn't restrain myself from naming this the "R.E.A.L." mod. I have done my best to preserve the magic of NOLF2 by keeping the VR conversion as close as possible to the original feel of the game, in every aspect that I could think of.

I believe that the mod is basically ready for release, and now I am looking for testers to make sure there are no glaring problems before making it available to the whole community.

If you are willing to experience Cate Archer in VR and you don't mind the occasional rough spot, reply here or PM me and I will send you a link to download the mod. Of course you will need the original game in order to play. It is best if you have some time to spend on this in order to go through the full game and report on any bugs that you might find, but even if you can just play a level or two, your help is precious to ensure that the community will be able to enjoy a quality release.

On my system (Oculus Rift, GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, Xbox One controller) the mod works very smoothly and runs at 90 fps with 2.0 supersampling, 4x antialiasing and all the graphics options maxed out. The game still truly is a beauty to behold, keeping in mind that 15 years have gone by since it was originally released. Ideally, I would like to have some testers that can report to me how (and if) the mod works on different configurations: for instance AMD graphics cards, Logitech controllers, and so on.

Even though this is obviously not the right forum to ask, if anyone also has a Vive available, it would be good to know if everything works correctly through Revive.

Thank you for reading this, and I hope that you will enjoy playing the mod as much as I did coding it!!!

Update Dec 12:
Depending on your system configuration, you might run into problems if you install the original game inside "Program Files (x86)" (trouble unpacking the mod files, game doesn't save, etc.). When NOLF2 came out in 2002, Windows wasn't protecting the Program Files folder yet, so the developers decided to put the saves inside the program's directory, as was customary at the time. To avoid trouble, it's best if you choose a normal folder during installation: for instance, tell the No One Lives Forever 2 installer to put the game in C:\MyGames\NOLF2.

Update Dec 11:

If the mod is crashing for you and/or you don't see Cate Archer's welcome animation at the title screen, you might have conflicting versions of the game's effects library. In your installation folder, you might find a subfolder named "Game", and inside that, a file named "CLIENTFX.FXD" (there's also a "CLIENTFX" folder, but I'm talking about the file). Either delete just this specific "CLIENTFX.FXD" file, or delete the whole "Game" subfolder altogether, which will save you 1,75 GB of disk space. Don't worry about the contents of the "Game" folder: they're all duplicate files and old versions, and they were needed only for working with the level editor.

Sadly the NOLF series got screwed over by Activision, Fox and Warner Brothers. All three may own part of the IP for NOLF, refuse deal with anybody to bring the game back, but have the lawyers ready in case anybody tries. So there's no online stores that sell the games.

Of course there's other means of getting them, but shouldn't be posted in here (rules, etc). But the game is effectively abandoned, so it's a slightly different situation.

All that kojack said is true. However, what is also true is that it would take just one employee at Warner Bros., Activision, and/or 20th Century Fox, who gets the initiative to go down to the basement and dig out the paper copy of the contract detailing the rights to the game, in order to make it possible for a publisher to sell the full game again.

The situation is stuck not because there's an actual, verified legal impasse among the three companies, but only because of laziness. The deals struck around 2002 apparently predate digital records, so it's not just a matter of entering a keyword in the company's search engine to find out how things stand, but it takes someone willing to go through the filing cabinets and hunt for the legal papers. (Which is strangely appropriate, if you are familiar with the gameplay of NOLF2, especially the Siberia levels!)

I do believe that with enough interest from the community, someone will surely start to get enough motivation to straighten out the matter.

true.... i would not change it tho..... (which is a cliché but there you have it. Biology is strange, change a few hormone levels and your entire outlook / perspective on life alters).

thanks... bookmarked link and i suggest anyone interested does the same. the mods may feel the need to delete the link - which is understandable.

Tried this tonight but couldn't get it to work. I unzipped the REAL mod files into the NOLF 2 folder. but when I start the program. the splash screen starts then gets smaller and smaller until it is just a small square in teh corner of my rift headset.  If I then click start new game I get an error in windows that says

Client MFC Application has stopped working............
    etc

No idea why it is not working.

Thank you for being the first tester  :)

The menu screen getting smaller is behaving as expected: at the same time you should also be seeing a 3D animation of Cate walking toward you. When Cate walks away, the title screen returns to normal size (slowly if you let it do its thing, or immediately if you click on something, in which case the animation is cut short).

A few points to check in order to diagnose the crash on new game:
    1. Is your game updated to v1.3?
    2. Did you by any chance try to start a new game before installing the R.E.A.L. mod? Did it work?
    3. Did you install the game to the default location (i.e., into the "Program Files (x86)" folder)?

OK.  I  don't see Cate walking anywhere when I start the game just the menu screen getting smaller then bigger (seems I didn't wait long enough for it to get bigger. funny the things you forget).
Yes my game says it is 1.3
No.  no game was started before installing this mod.  In fact it was a fresh install.
No.  I installed it on a different drive D: \No One Lives Forever 2
    Hope this helps mate.

Since the application appears to be entering VR mode, but you don't see the scripted animation and the new game command is failing, it might be that for some reason the game is not finding all its resources.

Could you please open a command prompt, navigate (cd) to the installation dir, give the command
    dir /s > list.txt
and send me the generated "list.txt" file, so that I can check if anything is missing?

NOLF 1 was one of my favourite games: NOLF 2 not so much, because of the stupid respawning guards. But I'd still like to give it a try in VR.

I used to hate them too! Luckily there are only a couple of points throughout the game where the guards respawn continuously.

Now I have to say that, being an older and more patient man, they don't bother me so much anymore. Also, having played through the game so many times to develop the mod, I understand why the designers felt the need to put them there. They do keep you on your toes.

I have sent you a link to download the mod, I hope that we can sort out the_soupdragon's problems too!

@the_soupdragon: I might have an idea about what's causing your issues. By any chance, do the entries on your menu screen have a black background? (It should be yellow/orange as in the banner at the beginning of this thread).

Im at work at the moment so not a my gaming PC.  I think the menus looked fine but when it shrank and then expanded the background was all black.  Is that what you meant?
I will check later when I get home.

By black background I mean this:

Can you recall if you had something like that?

For reference, the title screen should look like this instead:

    Thank you for your input!

I had developed and tested the mod only against the official version of the game. As it turns out, the "revival" version adds a lot of unnecessary files to the installation, and that tricks the application into loading an old copy of the effects library which is incompatible with my VR port.

I will code around this, and release a new build of the mod in the next few days that ignores the extra files. For now however, you can easily work around the issue. In your installation folder, you should find a subfolder named "Game", and inside that, a file named "CLIENTFX.FXD" (there's also a "CLIENTFX" folder, but I'm talking about the file). Either delete just this specific "CLIENTFX.FXD" file, or delete the whole "Game" subfolder altogether (which will save you 1,75 GB of disk space). Don't worry about the contents of the "Game" folder: they're all duplicate files and old versions, and they were needed only for working with the level editor.

Please let me know whether this solves your problem!!!

Awesome work and thanks for the help getting it working.  Looking forward to playing through the game once again.  Lots of good memories here.
