At the BETT conference we were given a private demonstration of the OGO doing live-streaming of a actual roulette table and players as an example of VR-Wagering. It was a demonstration so it was not mainstream, but seemed to work as well as any MobileVR (phone based) live-stream.

On a side note, I really look forward to seeing how Curry's employees use their "unique" sales skills to sell the OVR. I will have to "secret shopper" them and record what they say to n00bs who want to buy a OGO.

i'm about to switch broadband providers so i can get 100Mbps - this world cup could be costly - we at least deserve a semi final out of it!

I've been on a very solid 76meg service for a few years so not too worried about my end. I'm maybe a bit concerned about the providers server end. The servers have been a bit mixed so far with the Rift video apps but I'd expect the BBC to be on top of this if they're using the same infrastructure as their iPlayer.

Then there's the stream's target bitrate & resolution. Netflix streams HD at around 5meg & 4K at around 15meg. I'd have thought the minimum for a watchable VR stream would be 4K, I doubt any provider is realistically going to invest in infrastructure capable of higher than that. But I have my doubt it would be that high even, given the relatively low number of prospective VR viewers.

I'm worried about this DnD - i watched a few things with the Gear VR - football was one of them and i tried a few games - it wasn't good.

I too need solid info on this - i'm about to switch broadband providers so i can get 100Mbps - this world cup could be costly - we at least deserve a semi final out of it!

Bad WiFi is a myth :) If you take your time, read a few tutorials and guides online you can have a great signal all around the house. I live in a Victorian Building, thick brick walls (not those plywood and cotton builds) ... I am 3 rooms away from the router. The GO has a pretty decent WiFi antenna I must say.

    this is the router

I had a really annoying buzzing homeplug so decided to make use of my mobo's wifi instead. Took a couple weeks to track down why the on-board Wifi module was operating at half-speed... changed the module from an Intel AC-3160 to an AC-8260 to get access to more settings... changed the antennas... changed every setting under the sun.

Turned out I had to split my router's combined 5 and 2 Ghz identifiers to separate identifiers then have the PC connect only to the 2 Ghz. Boom... full speed. Who knew?

Should just say it wasn't a signal strength issue in case anyone's thinking 2Ghz penetrates better than 5.

Who has experience of watching a live streamed event in the Go? how has it looked? did the stream have bitrate and resolution information? or if not... just an impression of the experience would be good

Well I started the Oculus Venues thread, which is a 100% live stream GO application (GearVR as well).

I attended the first concert and it was damn amazing. The first 3-4 songs were grainy, but the next hour of the event was incredibly crisp and clear, and the audio was damn near perfect. The 360 media streaming combined with VR social software is looking incredibly.

It feels great to get excited about a VR experience that has nothing to do with mere gaming!

Great point.  Now, how many people enjoy spending money on watching sport every week?

    A billion?

Come on Oculus - invest, invest, invest!   MVRGA - Make VR great again!     :D

    Exactly, Hiro.

Oculus Venues (and similar software) provides front row seats to events around the world, and for free! Granted, I'm sure someone will charge in the future once the technology improves. But everything I've seen so far (even similar apps on the Rift) are completely free; and the experience currently available on GO is truly innovative.

Such a shame that the BBC are only providing VR for mobile users though. I would love to watch England winning the World Cup in VR but I guess I'll have to put up with watching us win it flat instead. :(

It's gonna happen. I can feel it in my bones.

Really good that Oculus are offering this sort of thing though, particularly for people like me that are unable to leave their homes at times.

You should write a piece on how VR helps deal with those occasions - think the community would find it interesting on the beneficial aspect of VR beyond just the game gratification. If you need a steer to a VR media service that would run it I could point you too some.

Cheers Zen, I'm edging ever closer to a purchase. It'll be interesting to see how many companies use Venues & how many produce their own apps. I'm kind of excited about the World Cup app's lobby and what looks like a big-screen live stream before going to a choice of view points.  Kind of makes for an enveloping World Cup experience kind of thing.

Actually DnD, since you're a Rift owner considering a second Oculus HMD for 360/VR live-streaming, I'm tempted to say that you may want to wait until the release of Santa Cruz.

There's a strong chance that Oculus Venues (and similar apps) will be available on SC; and by then there will likely be more enticing broadcast events (like the World Cup) taking part.

The experience with GO is fantastic, but the events themselves aren't exactly world-renowned. The Entertainment industry (e.g. theater, sports) needs more time to integrate, and Santa Cruz will be out while that integration is still taking place.

    Just my humble opinion
    :)

Had a 3 hour power cut! .. guess what I did, called The National Grid, they told me it would be 3 hours, said sorry, I said it was fine I will be fishing during that time, the woman sounded perplexed but remained professional, I put down the phone, fired up the GO, hooked it to my always ready power brick and went fishing. Didn't even notice the power coming back on. Heh the world we live in.

I'm in two minds... I have this feeling that anything more than VR media viewing and maybe a few simple games... I'm likely to head towards my PC VR goodness. Having said that, when Santa Cruz comes out, I'll no doubt be enticed by that instead! SC will be too late for the World cup though :/

I have an idea, someone send me their Go for the next couple months.

LZ, I'm now more enticed. And I want the phone connectivity to enable in-headset calls I've decided.

That's the feature that HTC Focus just added to their latest update.. right?
Well I expect that to be added to OGO soon to keep relevant.

It's ridiculous that this wasn't released globally.  It's also ridiculous that it doesn't have "proper" controllers.
