GAMES WON'T UPDATE

I have a reoccuring problem of games needing an update, but it won't install the update. It downloads the update file, but once it goes into install mode it cancels. I click the update button again, same thing, it downloads the file but cancels on install.

I just reinstalled Oculus. Still won't work. This happened to me a couple months ago and I deleted everything on my computer and reinstalled oculus to get it to work. I really don't want to do that again.

Het thickbeard, have you tried disabling any anti-virus software (including Windows Defender) and see if the games will update? Also, please make sure that you running the Oculus software as an administrator. If you haven't already, please contact support at https://support.oculus.com/ and provide your Oculus diagnostic logs so we can help you out. Instructions on collecting logs are available here https://support.oculus.com/172672339980954/ . Thanks! -Rick

Sure have. And today, once again there's an update to my games and I'm back where I started. Almost every single time there is an update I have to delete everything and start all over.

I'm in the same position. Most of my games and apps will update just fine but three of them -- OrbusVR, Amaze, and Elite Dangerous -- have refused to update over and over again.

I've turned off the virus software and all firewalls.
I've confirmed that I'm logged in on an admin account with authorization to update anything.

Other apps download and install fine. But these three, no matter how many times I try, do the same thing. They download to 100 percent, hit the beginning of install, and then fail with the only message being "Sorry, we couldn't install XXX. Visit Oculus support to get help."

I previously had this issue with Elite: Dangerous and tried deleting files and directories, reinstalling the whole game, reinstalling the entire Oculus set up. I literally ended up starting my entire system over from scratch to get that one game working. And now it's not working again, even though dozens of other apps update just fine.

Same here: Amaze, Elite, Pokerstars and Virtual Desktop are the ones that I have in my library and they will not update. Downloading seems to work fine, but installation fails. Tried all the above things to no avail. I am now waiting for an update of the Oculus software, hope they recognize and solve this. Must be a lot of folks having this problem.

    Hey folks,

If you're having issues installing Elite Dangerous (and by extension other games also) it may be worth reinstalling Oculus itself and then giving it another go.

Any luck? There was a similar Win Security Update that did this but I can't trace it. I got 4 Games stuck. Here's what I think happened to me:
I use a HDMI>DP adapter on either CV1 or Rift (not matters) but when I installed a Soundcard for Music DAW (a 1x in the 8x Slot) it prevented booting into Windows randomly. So I figured it needed the 1x Slot only and was drawing full Watts regardless. Another User posted that their USB card did the same until they used the 1x yet feared the proximity to GPU fans and air restriction but it worked. I'm bothered it may curtail the life of my DAW Card!
Anyways, these crashes made Drive errors and needed Scan&Repair for both OS SSD and the Games Hybrid Drive. Before repair I couldn't even delete the games to try reinstall them. Of the 1 I did when repaired, it now can't Download!
I think that part is due to me installing Oculus without AV=OFF. I did a repair but some files did not seem to be deleted and the repair was odd and warned me of no access to even the C: Drive Folder even though I had selected D: only. It plays the other games ok and I can start any game that is Pending Update manually in their folder by exe and they run.
Trying again soon with a fresh 3rd OS install on this new PC! It will need secondary Drives added after OS and the Auto Update I know may add that bad Security Update!

I haven't managed to find it yet even though I tried on 2 occasions. However, Support also mentioned other option to try Creating another USER MS ACCOUNT and although I think that will work, I don't know if it is a simple matter to then transfer all progs permissions via any Renaming or just Deleting the broken User Account. I'll get around to it. I had this before on a Drive I considered was failing so just bought another Drive! Best of luck.

Beware that manually moving them by cut/paste could render them un-downloadable on that drive on that account again. A "Move" Game Files via Oculus Desktop could possibly work but test it on a unplayed game as a sacrifice. Or try creating a 2nd MS User Account and see what is possible then as suggested above. Unless the CMD commands are found to fix the Juncture.

If the issue is a corrupted User Account (I and Support think it is) then here's 2 methods that may be much better at fixing it properly. I have not tested either!

I uninstalled and reinstalled Elite Dangerous last week because it wouldn't update. It was running fine....until today because there is a new update. Grrrrr…..I'm not going to uninstall and reinstall every time a game updates.

Are we sure this issue is because of a corrupted user account? I'll just bite the bullet and reinstall windows if that is the case. I just don't understand why it only effects Oculus and only certain apps.

My Elite Updated but is a huge mess with stutter and smears even after dropping from SSx1.5 to SSx1 and verified and rebooted. Virtual Desktop won't Update and I have 4 others on my C: Drive I do not want there and can't be moved else I can't download them.
I'd ignore the fix for Users Antivirus as I just use Windows Defender as stock fresh install. It seems to have messed up from finding my access to the drive from the previous install and I the Programs that it affects are those trying to install prerequisite C++2015 however it had C++2017 preinstalled which they knew nothing about. At that point the Updates failed. Oculus are not good at looking at Logs to bother investigating and suggest the new MS User Account without any full means to transfer all your installs!
The permissions for that User Account need to be reinstated for 2nd Drive but how?!

Wondering if the issue is due to me using exact same name on a fresh OS install in which previous access was existing to my 2nd Drive. Therefore a new User Account would open up access.

YUP! It's due to Windows Permissions. Creating another User Profile didn't work.
What you must do is REMOVE/REINSTALL OCULUS (ideally to not recur again) TO 2nd DRIVE

Please note that this removes any currently eligible games from having automated refunds processed. You can look into requesting refunds, and what's accepted for such by clicking here.

    1.    Disconnect your computer from the internet.

    2.    Backup any necessary content. (GAME SAVES & KEY BINDS!!!)

    ·         You can find steps on how to do so by clicking here.

    3.    Reboot into Safe Mode.

    4.    Uninstall Oculus Home using the Control Panel.

    5.    Delete all Oculus folders from the following folder:

    ·         C:\Program Files

6a.    Remove any Oculus folders from the following locations:

    ·         These may be hidden folders that require viewing to be enabled.

    ·         C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData

    ·         C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData\Local

    ·         C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData\LocalLow

    ·         C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData\Roaming

    ·         C:\OculusSetup-DownloadCache\

    ·         C:\Users<profile>\AppData\Local\Temp\OculusSetup\

6b   Delete any Games and also all their Folders you can find in the same mentioned

6c   Use REGSCANNER (free) to search "Oculus" and delete all registries that it can (leave Steam & SteamVR) but leave Virtual Desktop alone (mine won't work after 2 further installs and deleting some of it's Registries!)

    7.    Restart your computer in normal mode.

    8.    Reconnect your computer to the internet.

    9.    Install Oculus Home again using the setup tool from our website here

    10.  Install Games/Apps

    ·         Ensure that Oculus is set as a trusted program in your firewall (automatic) and that your anti-virus is temporarily disabled (I use Defender) or uninstalled. I added steps 6b and 6c myself to be sure.

i.e. THERE IS NO FIX FOR OCULUS DIRECTING YOUR INSTALL ONTO YOUR OS DRIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

However, to install OCULUS to 2nd DRIVE:

    Open CMD Prompt in "Run"
Go to directory of your Setup file e.g. "E:/"
    "cd Downloads"
(whatever the directory is called you have it in)
    "OculusSetup.exe /drive=E"

Obviously there is nothing wrong with our Systems - it is the fault of OCULUS UPDATES if installed to OS Drive.

I wanted to bump this discussion up, since i'm continuing to have this exact problem since April as well. Oculus is telling me to completely Re-install windows, so I can get this one piece of software working. What an overkill solution to a significant problem with their software.

It's all to do with Windows Permissions. You are best reinstalling OS if you can else try the guides only my Virtual Desktop (has 2 Parts) tries to install the Services Part but it was already installed and so it fails. I'll miss it out until another fresh OS sometime.

I have a very simple solution to this problem, assuming you have a second drive.
I found this page after having the same issues.  I could update games a few months ago but now all updates were failing repeatedly (Beat Saber, Elven Assassin, and Superhot VR).  Out of frustration, I just uninstalled Beat Saber and Superhot then reinstalled to get the latest version.  But for Elven Assassin...
I used the "move" command in the three dot drop-down to move the game off of my OS drive.
    Then I updated it.
Obviously one successful update is a pretty small sample size, but it seems infinitely easier than some of the other solutions I just read, and it may work for others like it did for me!

I followed jasmattkrz's solution above and it's worked for the 5 games of mine that have been unable to download updates for the past month or two.  Those games are Amaze: Interactive Movies, Rec Room, GORN, SuperHot VR, and Elite: Dangerous.

And it's easy to make a new partition if you don't already have one.  Just follow this short guide: https://www.easeus.com/partition-master/partition-windows-10-free.html (be sure to leave a good amount of free space on your C drive so as to not impact performance and such)

The real test for me will be whether these games can download future updates without issue, but I'm optimistic.  And of course, be sure to back up saves in case they don't persist on their own, because some (most?) don't.

Many thanks for the solution, jasmattkrz!

It goes wrong because C:\Program Files Folder is an OS with Permissions Only but it loses access at some point in time.

Yep, still happening to me i'm afraid, even after several windows and oculus app updates, the problem isn't going away

Known games so far, beat saber, killing floor, lone echo, space pirate trainer, superhot, drop dead, It's becoming really annoying now, I know it's not my AV, I've sent my logs to Oculus and they say it's just a windows permission issue but how come all my other games update and I can still install new ones?

Only work around I've got is to locate the game save and back it up, moving the game to my second drive and then updating it and then moving it back to my main ssd and restoring my save game as I didn't back up my save game with lone echo and I lost all my progress so I won't be playing that again

I'm not uninstalling the app and all my games again, done that a good few times already and definately don't wanna do an OS reinstall
I was a believer!! I was a Kickstarter backer!! Now I shall reap the rewards!!! :D:D:D

The only thing that works for me is using the "move" option from the Library screen to move problem games to another drive. Moving it to another directory on the same drive did not work.

    Hello All,

I am also experiencing these issues with updates. Lone Echo, Elite Dangerous, just to name a few. It seems to me that an Operating system re-install is just unacceptable. My Rift S runs very well and I hope that someone will fix this updating issue.
Already done a complete uninstall of oculus software and deleted ALL traces of residual files. Re-installed and still the issue is there. Tried installing to another SSD but that did not work either.
I have looked at all the possible solutions on here but none work for me.
Come on Oculus team, help us out please.

    Cheers

Guys just search the Forum please...Use Regscanner to clear "Oculus". Install Oculus with AV=OFF. Oculus please change your Default Installation of Main Program to avoid OS Folders. Enjoy ;)
