I had the original Oculus Rift for about 2 years now.... i am going to upgrade to the Rift S but i prefer the deign of the old controller style...

My question is can I use the older controller/grips with the new unit?

    No, they aren't compatible.
(Which is unfortunate, I prefer the old ones too)

that's a shame...  maybe we can petition occulus to add support for the old grips

I don't really notice any difference with the grips other than the surface texture which has changed slightly... it now has a subtle cross-hatch texturing.

The big difference is that the rings are headset facing rather than downward facing. Some people think that feels different but personally it feels good to me.

The old one's can't be made to work though as the headset cameras need to be able to see the LEDs in the rings so that's why they changed.
