So long and thanks for all the fish

Well, today my Occulus Rift died. The wiring harness seems to have developed a bad kink that broke the connection. I looked online and can't find a replacement and to be honest, its been acting a bit goofy for a while so it was about to go. The headset is so torn up I have had to remake the harness three times now and I don't think it will do with another. Its a shame too because I had just started to get out of my shell and meet some of you. I am a terribly paranoid person sometimes. I wanted to post this somewhere because but I had no idea where so I decided here would be the best place. I got the device after my brother killed himself and it helped a lot to get me out of the psychological torment that comes from having a sibling kill themselves. It allowed me to escape myself and go to wonderful places I could never go in real life. I loved playing for hours in space-based games where I could roam the worlds and see wonderfully beautiful vistas or travel the wastelands of a post-apocalyptic world where everything sucks but nothing can really hurt you. This device was a godsend for me and I am going to miss it. I am going to miss being able to slip away from the worries of the day and go adventuring in the closest thing to a holodeck I will ever know. I will try my best to get a new one but I seriously doubt that will happen with all the student loans I have and with how expensive the devices are. That is why I write this as a goodbye. Perhaps one day I will have the money to get a Rift S or whatever is out at that point but that most likely won't be for a while if ever. I had a lot of good times and I hope you all do well.

Sorry for your real life horror, glad you found an escape with VR. If it is that much of a relief for you I am sure you can find away to get the cash even if for a 2nd hand unit. Good luck either way.
Fiat Coupe, gone. 350Z gone. Dirty nappies, no sleep & practical transport incoming. Thank goodness for VR 🙂

Hey Matt, is your issue what is described here by any chance? If it is, then you can buy a replacement cable from the Oculus Store when they are in-stock.

I'm sure Oculus have said they are not restocking them cables anymore. However, I emailed to say this was unfair because my cable looks doesn't look great. I was told that they would do their best to replace it if I needed to, but it hasn't broken fully yet and I don't want to waste money if it hasn't gone completely.

I'm proper gutted for you mate, hopefully Oculus comes with a solution or they pay some third party company to start making them.

@Wildt posted that word on Reddit is that they're working on restocking cables.

Thanks for the responses everyone and I have looked into getting a new cable but everywhere I look it sounds like they don't have the CV1 cable in stock and hasn't for a while. A few people here and there seem like they are having a lot of the same problems finding one but, to be frank, the people at Oculus have no reason to stock those anymore since they have a shiny new line of VR headsets they want you to buy. I don't blame them. It just makes good business sense. I might be able to fix it by cannibalizing one that broke for some other reason, but I am not holding my breath. It seems to be the most significant design flaw/planned obsolescence of the original Rift.

PS. I did find this that pretty much confirms my suspicion https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/cwp307/update_oculus_no_longer_replacing_rift_cv1_cables/

I'm sorry that you've had such horrific personal issues. It's wonderful to read that VR has brought you some peace or a healthy escape during this rough patch.
