  • First off, thanks for making a great piece of software, one that genuinely made me go wow when I started it up.

I have a question regarding using VLC to show SBS movies. If I use windows media player and go full screen I can use the F keys to get a movie in 3D. Only problem is that WMP seems to be very inefficient and struggles with playback at full speed.

VLC works fine as far as playback is concerned, but when I play an SBS movie I get an odd display. Instead of half left half right, I get 2/3 left and 1/3 right, thus breaking the 3D. It's like the right hand display gets 'lost' out of the side of the VLC window.

Without virtual desktop running I get SBS using VLC. As soon as i start virtual desktop VLC jumps to the uneven display.

Any ideas how to fix this?

TL;DR SBS 3D works in windows media player, broken in VLC.

Im not sure why VLC does this. It's kinda out of my control honestly :o I personally use Windiws Media Player for everything.

  • I downloaded this more because taking the Rift off every ten seconds was annoying and I've been absolutely floored by this. It performs absolutely perfectly and, having never had a particularly large monitor, being able to view pictures and do internet browsing and such on something like a 100" floating screen suspended in space just floored me when I first tried it.

I just donated $20 to support future development. Thank you so much for this application! It's everything I wanted and much more. Looking forward to fullscreen support!

Also, I really like the backgrounds! Sorry if this has already been answered somewhere, but is there any way to toggle the desktop view off? It'd be kind of neat to chill out and listen to music with some of these backgrounds.

    Hi!
Im extremelly impressed with this software!! I happily discovered that the January 25th update worked flawlessly in my laptop. Previous versions wouldnt work but this one did. Today after updating my nvidia driver to the version 347.25 , I try to use Virtual Desktop and to my surprise it doesnt work anymore!. I does show me the desktop but its frozen and it doesnt seem to update. Then windows pops up a notification on the taskbar saying that the Intel display driver crashed and recovered. On the oculus the desktop goes black and comes back intermitently.
Could the Nvidia update cause this errors? As I mentioned it worked flawlessly just yesterday, before I did the driver update.

I did follow your recommendations on the website about the nvidia power management options etc.

    Here's my setup:
    Razer Blade Laptop
    Processor
    Intel® Core™ i7-4702HQ Quad Core
    Processor with Hyper Threading
    2.2GHz / 3.2GHz (Base/Turbo)

    Chipset
    Mobile Intel® PCHM 8
    series chipset, HM87

    Memory
    8GB onboard memory
    (DDR3L-1600MHz)

    Graphics and Video
    Intel® HD4600
    NVIDIA® GeForce®
    GTX 765M (2GB GDDR5
    VRAM, Optimus™ Technology)

    Thank you so much!

This is a wonderful program and I will most certainly support what I can. I just recently spent $10 for Ciberveo and I really wish I hadn't after using this. I do have a question though, why is there not a curve screen option in the home theater? I have "How the West Was Won" which was filmed in cinerama and meant for a curved screen and having that option in the home theater setting would be outstanding. Also, is it possible for us to make our own theater setting?

Fun thing I've noticed. Because a lot of the blurring is caused by chromatic aberration. And because the chromatic aberration is colour based. Turning up the screen vibrancy for the DK2 will improve clarity substantially.

If you're having trouble reading text try it out.

Oh! I was so caught up in that I forgot to post my question! :D

What format are the background images/are there any custom backgrounds available? I'd prefer to use a non-space background like a field or forest. Cheers!

Thanks for the support, there's no way to hide the monitor entirely no.

Sorry to hear you wasted 10$ on this :( The theater mode uses a fixed mesh so it doesn't support a floating curved screen. Maybe in the future I'll have some fixed environments with curved screens, can't promise anything.

Optimus configurations have been plagued by this driver bug for a while. I'd recommend switching back to 344.75 which seems to be a good version.

Peregrine: this has been asked many times before, the format is quite complex and I cannot support custom backgrounds.

Optimus is the biggest crap ever. Later generations are going to facepalm while they say something like "How could they be so stupid".

Optimus is the best example of creating something that is great for the time, but without considerations for the unknown the future brings.

    Hiya,

I'm trying out VirtualDesktop and having some issues with it. So I wanted to check in to see if I'm setting up things correctly.

My Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 5700 Series
    Firmware: 2.12
    Oculus Runtime 0.4.4-Beta

1st time I run VDesktop, the display is flipped
Changed the display to Portrait and to duplicate monitors. (When the rift was an extended display, the display orientation setting wasn't affecting it)

I'm only getting a small fish eye circle of the desktop. I quit out of Virtual Desktop. I try to rerun Virtual Desktop. Nothing changes on my screen. I wasn't sure if that means it's still running. I do see it running as a background process on my Task Manager.

I'm also getting Rift not detected error.

Is this expected? How should the desktop be visually shown on my Rift?

I got some bug reports and feature requests.

    Bug 1:
In video mode, if I move the VR desktop settings window far to the left of the screen, I think probably the moment it goes outside the viewport, the program crashes.

    Bug 2:
If I start windows photo slideshow (fullscreen) while in VR desktop, weird things happen. I cannot exit the slideshow and no controls like space to play/pause or mouse right click is responsive. Even after I quit VR desktop things are left in a messy state. When I tried to use task manager to close the slide show, all monitors went blank and I had to cut power to my PC to restart it.

    Feature request:
A larger cinema environment. The current one is great, but I find the screen too small. It makes it extra hard to see details in the video.

Check the FAQ on the website, you should setup your rift in extended mode, not duplicate. The Rift should be oriented so that its resolution is 1920x1080.

I am having the same issue as daniel, though using the 344.75 driver with the Jan 25 update. Optimus laptop with 64bitWin7 and GTX 870M (need it for travel, otherwise I would throw the thing under a bus).

I have disabled aero, and set up the recommended GPU settings. When I run VRDesktop it starts, in the Rift head tracking works and the mouse still moves around the screen, though the image that is shown is the screen before VRDesktop is opened. The mouse will not interact with the desktop seen in the Rift. The main monitor shows the VRDesktop settings screen, the Rift doesn't. Then a little while later the intel graphics crashes and the screen goes black for a while and then restores though the rift screen is black now.

Edit: Just unistalled the 64bit VRDesktop and tried the 32bit version, though it crashes on start with the message that it is "Unable to load DLL 'Mfplat.dll': THe specific module could not be found." I have media player installed and the System 32 folder contains mfplat.dll as does the installation folder for the 32bit VRDesktop.
  • Hey i'm not sure if i'm overlooking something, or if this has been an issue for anyone else but when i open the VRDesktop app, i have a copy of what was on my screen at the time appear on the oculus as you would expect, but then i have no mouse and the screen doesnt update, regardless of what im doing. Eventually the display on the oculus crashes and a message pops up saying 'Display driver stopped responding and has recovered'. Any ideas?

I guess it's my graphics card or my dual-monitor setup, but when I run vr desktop I get my main monitor in the rift, duplicating my second monitor. I can't access the settings of your program without running it first, and I can't move the settings window to the monitor I can see to change anything. It'd be great if that settings window were an actual window that could be moved (via shortcuts at the very least), or if I could run settings without running the vrdesktop first...or being able to run vrdesktop in true "windowed" mode.
  • My issues is withthe frame stuttering and jittering when i turn my head, like every 5 frame froze or jumped a frame, very annoying, plus i had a case a few minutes before when everything showing on my rift were jumping up and down very fast.

    Specs:
    i7-4770k
    Asus gtx 980 STRIX
    16GB ram.

It worked fine until i tried to activate nvidia DSR and that was when the jittering started. I tried to revert any changes i did, but nothing helped :/
  • Hey guys, new here.
I'd just like to say that I was originally outstanded with how awesome this looked! and the price xD I was even going to donate as soon as I would get it working. There comes the problem. For 3 hours or so I've been trying to get this to work but to no avail. Googling and roaming the forums provided "solutions" but none that worked for me.

My first problem was that no rift was detected. a quick uninstall and restart of vrdesktop and oculus sdk did the trick. Then I had *slash* currently have a problem with the monitor. Since I'm using a laptop i was fairly certain i had a screen (!) xD but changing my display to extend rather than duplicate did the trick. but then I hit a wall.

    mfplat.dll could not be found.

someone posted a solution to download the media feature pack but I still have the problem. I can't even send a bug report because too many are being sent by the application, apparently :(

    I'm using the latest Runtime
    Win7 64x
and a standard toshiba laptop :(

Virtual Desktop already super samples the render target to something like 5k so there's no benefit to using DSR. Make sure to plug the power adapter that comes with the rift, most of the time this is a solution to ocasional stuttering. Changing USB port can also help.

Well, when i first got the rift and VRdesktop, i managed to get 4k resolution within the rift and boy did it work! Made the screen look big so the text were easier to see, so i ended up with a 100 inch half meter from my face whle i multitasked like crazy :P

But for some reason, after i upgraded to gtx 980 and windows 7 to 8.1, then it doesnt work anymore :S
  • So I discovered what happened and would like to apologise for wasting everyone's time and humanity's precious air. I am frankly wasting it with my stupidity. After my original post, 5 minutes later I edited my post to state that I had win7 64x not 32x. however only 8 HOURS later after posting that post, I realised I downloaded the 32bit version of vr desktop. since then I have immediately uninstalled the 32bit one, and installed the 64bit one. It works a dream! This is by far, honestly, the best thing I have used oculus wise, and possibly one of the best programs I have downloaded ever. Thank you so much for bringing this to the world xD

as I have recently entered a Magic the Gathering tournament for $45, I have no money, however as soon as I get any, I shall definitely donate AT LEAST $20. I would like to apologise again and thank everyone for helping :)

Tomorrow really will be the best birthday ever.

Would love to use this application! It looks really, really good. But I have HUGE amounts of lag. Like 1 FPS. I have a MSI GS70 Stealth Pro with a GTX860M card and an I7 CPU. I tried downgrading to 344.75, but no change. Any ideas how to fix this? Funny note: If I select SBS On Screen option, everything runs smooth 75FPS! What the??!?!?!

Update: I read somewhere that there are some problems with the pixel shader you use with Intel. If I select the Intel card for this app and select no background and restart the application, it all works fine. Smooth, nice. But then if I switch from none to for example the home theatre and back to none again, it still lags like hell. So only if I start the app with none selected it works. Damn, I really wanted to use the home theatre. Any ideas of what is wrong? Thanks so much.

You need to disable Optimus entirely from your BIOS.

The only thing I can select in my BIOS is either switchable graphics (Optimus) or Internal Graphics (Intel 4600?) but that would make gaming impossible. So disabling Optimus; Nope. Does that mean Im doomed?

Hi All, just got a rift since yesterday and looking into the vr desktop app. I have unfortunately the same issues as described above. The x64 version starts, shows the mouse over the desktop in the rift but does not seem to update the desktop screen itself when right clicking or selecting an icon (just showing the screen it started with). After a while the app crashes or windows freezes. My nvidia drivers are 344.75 which already were on the system before installing VR desktop.

Installing the 32 bit version gives me dll error even it's on the system.. Any tips for getting the 64 version running?

Sadface. So how come everything works fine if I start up the app in no-background mode? And why does it go super laggy when I then switch from none to home theatre and back? Is it just driver inconsistency? I mean I have watched entire movies already in no-background mode and that works fine for hours!

Intel GPUs seems to have trouble with the simple pixel/vertex shader used for the skybox. Hard to tell whats happening when you switch environments.. But srsly though, dont expect great VRonn a laptop, even Oculus says to avoid it.
