I have spent 5 yrs+ giving money to app developers and Oculus just so i can enjoy the online VR experience between my friends and my family. Now to be told that i can now only use the online apps (i have purchased) if i sign up to Facebook is a P**s take. Oculus? I will never purchase from you again. All my money will now go to steam. My next VR headset upgrade will come from another brand, even if it is not as good as yours. Facebook? I don`t  give a s**t how much you`re worth. I wouldn`t sign up to your company if i had a gun to my head. Hopefully Governments will soon see, if they haven`t already seen you for what you are, and close you down. Things never last forever, just like my support for Oculus.

Good grief, not this old chestnut AGAIN.

Create a Facebook account with a throwaway email address then don't go anywhere near it again. You lose nothing. Facebook gains nothing. Problem solved.

"Good grief" indeed.  Can moderators tag threads as #Tantrum and give us the option of filtering them out?

Hi, I was fully aware that Facebook owned and helped Oculus continue in the development and marketing of their headsets. Being a big Oculus and VR fan for years, i was comfortable with that and appreciative of that fact. Especially when helping Oculus to get to where they are now. At that early stage though, i was not being forced to use the "Proven to be untrusted by Governments"  Facebook Social media platform to play my purchased products.
I don`t and never will trust facebook. Zuckerberg and Facebook have clearly proven to the world their incompetence, twice over, and Facebooks days are numbered. Sadly, they may take Oculus down with them : (.
I am p***ed with Oculus only for turning their back on their initial fans that funded them back in 2012, early 201313 with the release of the DK1`s, but now find they can no longer use their games because they do not use facebook for the same reasons i don`t.
I still admire and respect the Devs of Oculus, for their technical knowledge in all things VR.
Lastly. This was a clean thread and very well titled, you could have just browsed past it if you didn`t like me dissing facebook (which is clearly your issues here).BTW. The "Unbeliever" quote actually reads in my favour. Facebook is broken, without any doubts, and i don`t want it back thank you very much.

    Hi,
just out of curiosity, what apps are you not able to use without a Facebook account?
I only play single player stuff and don't care for online socializing, so I guess that's why I wasn't prompted to login with Facebook yet.

How on earth does my post read in your favour? I have a Facebook account linked to my Oculus account without any worries at all. I was just posting a method that you can have a Facebook account without feeding the Facebook machine if you want to. If you want to play online do what I've suggested. If you want to throw a hissy fit and choose not to, that's no problem. It's no skin off anyone's proverbial nose.

Anyone opening this sort of thread and not creating an empty Facebook account is just being stubborn and cutting off their Oculus nose to spite their Oculus Store face, which is why you're getting some very fair criticism.

Like I've said in the many other iterations of this thread in the past, and will do in the future: if you're worrying about internet privacy NOW then you're almost 30 years too late. Google have known what we have for breakfast every morning, what sort of dodgy porn we watch and what adverts will appeal to us all since the 90s. It's pretty pointless shutting that stable door tbh. Sure, you can go the Duck Duck Go route if you want but it's pretty pointless if you've ever had any sort of online presence of any kind since the internet first started. Once that horse is out you won't be able to get it back in again.

Every time you use a credit card, every time you use a mobile phone, every time you use public transport in London and I dare say other cities around the world, every time you see a doctor or are admitted to hospital, every time you go shopping and use any sort of loyalty card when doing your shopping that online presence continues to build.

This is all the start of SkyNet...but I personally couldn't give a fuck. I'm quite happily using my Rift S, my mobile phone, my internet access, my credit card, my Oyster card, my various email addresses etc etc etc. It's WAY too late to start worrying about these things.

Look.  We all know Facebook is an awful, knife in the back, piece of sh1t with a complete moron as the CEO/Founder but you have to realize that Oculus is OWNED by this heap of dung.  So you will have to live by THEIR rules.

Trust me the sooner Facebook is destroyed....the better.

And what if the pieces are picked up by WeChat; an even more sinister platform that combines Facefook, Twatter, PayPal, Zelle, your Government eID and your COVID-19 health certificate into one state run app??? :p

It does suck that you cannot share anything pics/vids without a FB account. And I will not be getting one, never had to sign up to social media before to enjoy all the aspects of my video games, not about to start now. But if anyone does cave and make an account may I personally recommend a name that begins with "BOT" just to troll FB and put more fake/trollish looking accounts online lol.

This is a massive bummer. I just purchased my Oculus as a complement to my Index just so I could play certain things with friends who were in the Oculus ecosystem (such as Minecraft). After setting it all up (and buying a few accessories) I went to add my friends and found this out. I too have no interest in setting up (or should I say, reactivating) a Facebook account.

    I'm about to get real....

After an attempted suicide several years ago, on the advice of my therapist, part of the recovery process (along with medication and other life changes), was to get rid of my social media accounts (Facebook being one of them). I knew before buying that Facebook owned Oculus, but that was fine because nowhere in any of the information that I found when looking to buy it, did I come across this requirement. It's not on the Oculus Rift-S page or the Quest page or the FAQ (that I could/can find). In fact, it says I can add friends just by searching their name. I pulled this info off the website tonight.
To add friends to your Oculus account on your computer:
    1. Open the Oculus app on your computer.
    1. Select Friends from the bottom left menu.
    1. Click Add Friends and search by someone’s username or first and last name to add them.
The information is also not on the Amazon product page. It's not listed on the box. I already had to create an Oculus account, I wouldn't think I would also need a Facebook account. I can understand requiring it for certain social features, but for basic friend connection, the requirement, for me, is disappointing to say the least and now I don't think I'll be playing with my friends now.  :'(

You know, personally, I don't like Facebook, either, and I deleted my account years ago. I tried to create a bot account using VPN and secure browsing to prevent identity issues, but it either prohibited me or required my phone number to do that, and I don't want to share personal stuff with Facebook. I tried to set up an account at work, stupid me, of course, it was blocked by the employee monitoring software that we have installed. Can you share some more tips on how to create a Facebook account effortlessly without your personal information?

Exactly. Go create a free email somewhere and then create a facebook account with bogus information in it. Done.

I didn't give Facebook my real name, my real hometown, where I went to school at, or anything like that. Nor do I ever actually use Facebook. According to my Facebook profile, I live in "None of your Business" which is apparently somewhere in Alabama, I think, and went to school at "Why do you care" which is apparently a town in Florida (according to Facebook). Also according to my profile, I'm a CGI neko-jin superheroine. You know, cause there's no freaking way I'm putting an actual picture of myself on the profile.

IMHO, Facefook wants to become the next WeChat; which allows people (in certain countries) to use it as an e-substitute for their government issued ID.

Hi. I just want to say thankyou so much to everyone who has commented.
To those who read my initial thread and got slightly upset with my response, no worries, i hear what your saying and thankyou for your opinion.
(Snowdog): There was no hissy fit involved here on my part, just my response being read in the wrong context i guess.
I press gently on my keyboard when typing, no fists. The quote put at the bottom of your thread read in my favour, as i clearly mention, not your post. Yeh i could just make up an email address and fake name, but to me it is all about principle.
(wuzp): Again, you could`ve just read it and moved on lol. No tantrum here, just voicing my opinion.
    Ok, my point is:
I have been gaming for 20+ yrs now. Every online gaming company in that time clearly puts out its T&C`s about what you are to expect when signing up to use their products. Whether their games are created with coop or sinlgeplayer campaigne in mind, you know before you buy whether you will be able to share their product with your friends or not.
I have yet to find a company that advertises to its customers its online VR products, which 99% of them are designed  around a social pretence, and advertised to be used alongside your friends. Then once it has made a few 100 million, only then for that company to change its agreement by stating that "you can no longer use your online products you purchased from us anymore with your freinds, unless you sign up to our Social chat facilities which by the way, we are proud to announce, has been proven by (US Congress) to be untrustworthy. Thank you for your money anyhow. lol.

As long as the forum software "rewards" us with points for speaking/talking back; you will always get replies from me; whether or not you think they are called for, so long as the content is "within the rules."

And in truth, that little "modifications of service" clause is in every Terms & Condition or EULA I've ever seen. Yes, even ones for forums.

Well you did find a company that does all that, Facebook. And then you bought Facebook's VR products anyway.

by the way, we are proud to announce, has been proven by (US Congress) to be untrustworthy.

Additionally, US Congress has repeatedly proven to be untrustworthy.

At the end of the day, you claim to have never trusted Facebook but then you ended up trusting them and buying their VR Products. This entire thread is: Smudge971 vs Smudge971.
