kontiki01.jpg

Alone At Sea.
Float on a raft and experience the solitude and isolation of an open ocean.
Explore the raft from the famous Kon Tiki expedition.
Climb the ladder into the crows nest.
Turn on the radio for appropriate background music.

UPDATE (August 12, 2014):
DK2 version now available for Windows and Mac, SDK 0.4.1.

Notes: there seems to be issues with positional camera location and in-game player height. Pressing "r"
will center camera and may alter player scale depending on where your camera is mounted.

it's absolutely beautiful. give a great impression of what is possible to enhance historic events such as the voyage of the kon tiki back in the 40s.

while standing on the crow's nest I imagined how impactful it would be to change the weather conditions dynamically but even only standing there really, really gives you a powerful impression of the vastness of the sea and how life might have felt on the raft back then.

thanks a lot for that wonderful work,
    many greetings from Austria,
    Stefan

Very nice and polished demo, Agua! Visually, it's very engaging, and thanks to silentdriver for implying that one can actually go up the ladder. :)

One minor thing: I thought it was a little bit quiet (before I discovered the radio). Since the raft is bobbing in a water a bit, I figured I'd hear a little bit of water clapping against the raft a bit. I imagine it might be hard to pull off in this case without binaural audio, though.

    Thank you for sharing this!

Thanks silentdriver. Different weather and times of day do lend a really different feel. I thought about doing a night scene originally. Maybe in another edition.

Thanks drash. Glad you enjoyed it. I did include some ambient background noise like sloshing water and creaking ropes. It's audible for me when I play tested. I'm curious why it wasn't there for your play through. I'll have to look into it.
  • This was great.

A good one to show people who are new to the rift

    Great work :)

Thanks for sharing your demo, I'm looking forward to experiencing the vast open sea.

If that's an in-game screenshot it looks very pretty.

As I already mentioned, I totally love your demo. Are you planning to give the ropes and woods a little bit movement? The flag already gives a bit of a wind Illusion, but the boat is static. Or is it possible to make the shadow move or is the light prebaked?

    Great work so far!

please do update this with Unisky (waterspout anyone?) or just the basic day/night cycle. There is a free alternative to UniSky although of course stripped of all weather exapt rain, but it would work for this beautifully to add dynamic rain and dya/night easy. Great demo so far, also try a (trigger box?) with 3d sounds for the wave clap on the boat.
    Cant wait to see more.
Nothing is impossible, just time consuming.

I am very excited of watching further development on this. It fekt so awesome to be on crows nest. I almost feel over thinking I was heading the mast! I could almost feel the breeze whipping the flag around. What I am hoping for is different times of day and night as well as weather variables. Really would live to see a swaying motion integrated with weather events anx wave sizes. The potential here is fantastic. From meditative to exhilerating. The isolation in the vast expanse of the ocean was awesome to experience

Very nicely done. Love the concept of dioramas like this in VR and this is a great setting. The music is a really nice touch.

Great atmosphere, very soothing :) I got quite immersed there - it felt weird to take the rift off and be in a dark room after the feeling of being in the hot sun.

Quick question- for demos like this, will they run without a Rift typically?

As I wait for my DK2, I want to start collecting and curating demos and this looks like a great starter.

    Thanks-

This demo made me really excited for the future MYST like VR games.

It also made me realize that binaural audio processing will be SOOOO incredibly important to establish presence.

    Nice job! Wicked experience!

    It looks amazing.
Now, if Kindle reader can be incorporated into these dioramas then people will be able to read a book in an amazing range of locations. Haunted old house? Oak-panelled library?

This is fantastic. It felt so good to be there. Perhaps some shark fins circling in the water or that parrot up on the rigging?

This is one of the nicer looking demos I've tried so far with my Rift. Really nice attention to detail.

The water looks a bit strange/unrealistic to me but everything else looks great.

Maybe you could add random weather effects, like passing rain or thunderstorms, would really add to (an already cool) experience.

Excellent experience and great DK2 implementation. It worked in direct mode for me unlike most other demos right now.

Played this on Dk1 and now on Dk2 its like night and day, love going to the top of the rigging and just looking out.Perhaps you could add some flying seabirds? If you add a fishing to it im staying on board all day! :D

    This.

And one in a cottage with a thunderstorm outside, one in a wood-panelled study, a ski-chalet...

I think I need to get harder at work on UE4...
