Wow, now Michael Abrash has joined Oculus. I'm going to need daily updates for this demo just to keep current with what all is going on.

This demo and Titans is the biggest hit with everyone I demo the kit for. I love that you don't make the user move or walk around in the space. You bring the entertainment to us. The block approaching your face is probably the most "real" feeling I've had in the rift. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make more dioramas like this!

Wow, this is great - I watched it twice.
Nice to show the possibilities of VR to people new to this stuff, like my mom.
I can't show her Dreadhalls and stuff like that.

Would be cool to have it in different languages.
    However, Great Work!

    awesome demo, Great work!
Would it be possible to add a short version of this I can use to demo to my friends without the history part?

Just some information if anyone cares... I am currently working on a massive revamp of this project in the Unreal Engine. Hopefully next month I can wrap it up and release it.

Super exciting. I truly hope you finish it on time! This is a great little intro to the Rift!

Awesome. Your intro is always the first thing I show folks. Its a perfect way to ease into VR. The mildly stimulating and simple tests really help acclimate new users. Very much looking forward to rev. 2!

Fantastic! Any chance for a quick DK2 update to the old version though? Not having tried the Rift yet, it would be awesome to use this as, you know, an actual introduction. Regardless, looking forward to the UE4 version!

I think something like this should ship with the Rift, whether it be for DKx or even definitely the CV1. What does everyone else think?

Can't wait for this new version, love media players like this. Great stuff.

as you might already know: I'm also frantically looking forward to your revamped 2.0 version ;) can't wait to get my hands onto the custom subtitles idea. as I've said before: it's (also here) your demo I let people first experience when getting in touch with VR. the results so far: open mouths, endless grins - and those - who were moved most by the tech and your demo - even had some wet eyes while your experience ;) would be all too good to pimp its accessibility it up with german subtitles ;)

I hope you got your DK2 already, I'm really looking forward to a DK2 compatible version of this. Even after using the DK1 for almost a year I just enjoyed sitting around and watching. This will be my #1 demo to show first time rifters.

    Ping!

    Any status update on this?

Never got the chance to try this on DK1, looking forwards to the update.

If you need any testers for your Unreal version, I'd happily volunteer! :)

I just finished the main audio track which includes the music and narration. I closed my eyes, played the audio, and visualized going through the finished demo. Even with just the audio, it got me really excited. I will be using all properly licensed music this time, so hopefully a few video clips can be considered fair use, so that I can host this on Oculus Share.

I'm still on target for a release just before Oculus Connect on the 18th of this month. Now time to finish those new scenes...
  • This one is not yet re-mastered for DK2 right?
I tried it out and while I can run it, theres no head tracking, and IPD is kindda stretched.

What i've seen so far is very impressive however, especially the transitions.
This would be an EXCELLENT demo i can show my friends.
    Really looking forward to it!

I'm not sure if I can finish all the scenes I had planned for V2.0 before Connect, but I want to release something before I fly out to Hollywood. So, I'll probably need a few people to test out a sample build around Tuesday of next week. PM me if you are interested.

Also, working with the new SDK has been one issue after another. Thanks to drash's tips scattered around the forum for helping me fix most of the issues.

It does not seem to use my oculus config utility ipd since the seperation is way too much getting really sqaure eyed straight from the start, meanwhile the config utilty from oculus and HL2 works great. I'm suprised i'm the only one having this issue.

Perhaps the Introductory Demo default ipd is common and most people dont notice it ? Anyway i know i can't get past the first sentence because of it, shame :(

    SDK 0.4.2

The version I currently have hosted on my website is the old DK1 version, which I have never tested with a DK2. You'll need to wait until I release the new version next week.

A beta version is finished. I'm sending it out to people who volunteered to test it. If anyone else wants to test it, send me a PM.

I'm going to put the beta version link on here for a limited time. No one else that I know has tried this, so it might not even work. If you download it, try to use the Direct to Rift option. You'll need a set of codecs, just like the ones used for Riftmax. This is a 64-bit, DirectX11 build:

  • Tried the latest beta version and while i can run it,
the moment i pressed space, it just showed firstly moving along a runway?
then the sky with me on what looks like a sofa, and finally ending with an exclamation mark at a far distance.
Thooughout, i did not hear any sound/music.

Quite sure thats not what the demo should be doing?

It worked for me, but there were a few problems I'm sure you're working on. The tanks in the field would disappear and there is total black smearing. I really like this demo and want to help so I can go into detail about that kind of thing if you need it.

I liked parts of the original that I miss seeing here. Like starting off in a normal room and then having the walls fall away. I suggest doing that before going to the moving gallery. I thought the original end of a city was a little more impressive then outer space from a 'never used VR before' point of view.

A room with the half life style design had my mind anticipating tricks so it didn't work as well as a clean room did I think.

I can see why you made the choices you did, and I still like it a lot though!

Just tried it with direct mode, runs perfectly smooth on my amd r9 280.
