Well, so far I have been able to get every single demo working (90% in Direct mode) perfectly fine (75Hz). It's just a little more work (playing with compatability / admin rights / executable parameters). But does the home theatre setting doesn't use a skybox does it?

Mirror to monitor mode is quite neat. Thought I should mention though that the monitor would only give me a blank screen at first til I set the monitor resolution to be the same size as the rift resolution.

    Awesome stuff as always!

    Hello

I tested it on my Clevo p170em with HD 4000 and GTX 680m. Unfortunately I cannot turn optimus off. The software can run without crashing but the screen capture is not working. What I meant is that I can see the background rendering smoothly and first frame when the virtual desktop turned on displayed as a still image. If I drag something into my rift extended to my left the display resets and get updated once. SBS is not working as well got some cross eyed image, seems to be not processed by rift driver. Nevertheless, I can still use it with integrated card(basic another way to turn off optimus but also lost discrete card  ). I am on nvidia 344.75 driver and latest intel driver.

Could you please found a workaround? I was warned that optimus laptops do work well with VR but so far I got most things working properly. Really enjoyed playing elite dangerous mid settings at 75hz :P

Getting this error on starting VR Desktop in Windows 7:

    pkwR1ec.png

Have SP1 installed as well as the Platform update, so I don't know what's going on here.

EDIT: Fixed. Had installed x86 version of VR Desktop instead of x64.
  • can anyone help me. i run virtual desktop and it starts in my rift like, sideways.. :( quick fix?

    are you running extended mode?

if so is your rift set to portrait or landscape in windows display?
Fiat Coupe, gone. 350Z gone. Dirty nappies, no sleep & practical transport incoming. Thank goodness for VR :)

Sadface. So how come everything works fine if I start up the app in no-background mode? And why does it go super laggy when I then switch from none to home theatre and back? Is it just driver inconsistency? I mean I have watched entire movies already in no-background mode and that works fine for hours!

Oh. If I throw my laptop at my concrete wall... Like as hard as I can... Will Optimus go away? :o
I've found the issue which could cause lag after switching in or out of theater mode (essentially the skybox was still rendered but with an opacity of 0 rather than being skipped completely). The fix will be in the next version.

Having some problems with my setup; can only get 59/60 framerate.

i5 2500K @ 4.7Ghz, nVidia 970 GTX, 8GB RAM. 3 monitor nVidia surround (5040x1050). Rift is extended mode, and legacy DK1 support enabled. No matter what settings I change (full screen/vertical sync etc.) I cannot get higher than 60fps. All nVidia 3D settings are set to default. If I untick fullscreen mode I get less than 60fps framerate. Of course the rendered screen is very stuttery under this configuration.

    Am I missing anything?

Not sure why you would be limited to 60hz, perhaps NVidia surround is limiting the refresh rate on the Rift to be the same as your other monitors? Did you exclude the Rift from your surround configuration? If you try with just 1 monitor, do you get 75 fps?

  • Hi
Thanks for the continued support of this great application. :)

Could I possibly ask for a new feature for the new release..?
I am only running my rig with the DK2 and no external monitor but it does not work with Virtual Desktop.
There is a workaround but it does not properly work.
Could you build this function into the new version?
    Thanks!

Yeah, we pretty much want that, all of us. I don't think it's technically possible without some major changes in Windows though. Sadly.
There is a dongle you can plug in to simulate a second monitor though. Forgot the name, sorry. It's been mentioned somewhere in this thread.
    DK1 - previously owned
    DK2 - 2014-08-26 RECEIVED (ordered 2014-04-24)
CV1 - 2016-05-25 RECEIVED (ordered on release day)
    Touch - 2016-12-07 RECEIVED (pre-order with CV1)

Headless ghost, the kickstarter is in the process of shipping now. I actually currently use my DK1, which has broken sensors but is still a perfectly good monitor.
  • Hi,

Do you plan on adding support for the Rift as main display?

My monitor doesn't support 75Hz, so I set the Rift as main display and I deactivate the monitor. I just keep the Rift powered off when not using it. This method gets me the best performance, but it makes Virtual Desktop unusable most of the time, since fullscreen mode is a bit buggy.

    Thanks.

I've gotten my sim racing rig (cockpit) to run "monitorless" using only a Headless Ghost and my DK2. This is truly great... I set up Windows to require no password, so all I have to do is power up the PC and put on the Rift, wait for my desktop to appear, then go racing! I run iRacing, and so far, it's been 100% reliable. It's a true pleasure to use, having never to take the HMD on and off to do things (touch typist here). Thanks again, Guy (and Dev, for the Headless Ghost) for developing the goodies that allow us to take our simulation (and gaming) to the next level.

  • I just got this program and it's near perfect. There are a couple suggestions I'd like to make, but I'm sure they're issues that have already been addressed. The zoom in effect needs work, it's way too difficult to read unless the screen is huge. I'm sure this will be resolved as well when the CV1 comes out. I also notice, in the theater mode, that the screen seems to slowly shift, forcing me to reset every couple of minutes, even though I don't move, other than to look around. Otherwise, this is exactly what I've been looking for.

    Hello,
This is my first post and its in regards to fully uninstalling/removing the software. It seems as if there are still traces of the software after having removed it, particularly with my video files. After having removed the software, if I right click on any of my video files there is still the option to open with "Virtual Desktop" even though its no longer installed, it no longer has the virtual desktop icon next to it, and if I do select that option it just asks me to select a program to open with since that software is no longer on the system. Anyone have any suggestions? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for mentioning this. I'll be looking at a different installer and fix those issues at the same time. For the time being you'd have to go in the registry to remove those entries.

Ok, this is a really long thread. I certainly do not have time to read all 59 pages. I just wanted to mention my thoughts:
    • My most wanted feature is multiple windows. Now, before I gave up reading I did notice it mentioned once and it was said that rendering one window is plenty difficult already. My thought is that if this is a large limitation then consider the Elite: Dangerous method (sort of). If I'm looking ahead I'm seeing my main screen. If I turn my head to the left my main screen disables and my left screen enables. Rarely would I actually need to see both screens at the same time, as long as enable/disable was fast enough.
    • I've been trying to figure out a way to smooth out text. It can be quite hard on the eyes reading text where you can see each magnified dot. I haven't really thought of anything realistic though.
    • Sometimes Virtual Desktop does some annoying switching thing (VD -> Non-VD desktop -> VD again). This is especially common if a window is somehow on a different screen. I have a really hard time in Unity if I don't have everything set up perfectly before I turn on the rift (or VD). To make matters worse, it often will deselect anything I have selected before any action can even be taken by the selection. Take the play button in Unity for example. If I start the game and then try to stop it I click the play button when running but it does the switching thing and doesn't stop the game.
    • The Virtual Desktop settings dialog is oddly sized. It is always just a little too big so I can not move / close the window or access the buttons at the bottom of the window.

Please explain the process to watch a 3D blu ray on virtual desktop. Can I watch directly from the disk, or do I have to rip an sbs MKV file?
Not a Rift fanboi. Not a Vive fanboi. I'm a VR fanboi. Get it straight.
  • The program crashes whenever I try to watch an SBS 3d movie in it.

Which is unfortunate because the 'home theater' desktop was what I was looking for in regards to a movie watching app.

Unable to get other software to use direct 3d at the same time. It will load but input will not be possible. I had to close it to get 3dsmax to accept input. same thing with diablo 3. They did load and display without issue, but input was not possible

Is it, or will it be, possible to play 180° and 360° sbs 3d movies and other formats like MaxVR?

The next version will feature an improved UI which is resizable. As for text clarity, cant do much. CV1's resolution increase will likely help a lot.

Output to SBS and hit F7.

You have to play games or other 3d apps in windowed or windowed-fullscreen mode. Check the FAQ on the website.

The video player in Virtual Desktop currently supports 180 and 360 degrees as well as SBS and over-under projections for 3D videos.

Well of course it does. Now if Virtual Desktop could only do my laundry - oh, wait, I have my wife for that *ducks*

Logged in primarily to say thanks, this is a great app!

Just want to mention some of my favorite features, in case other people haven't tried them yet:

The SBS anagraphic mode is extremely useful, I've been watching 3D movies via this method: Star Trek Into Darkness space scenes are very striking in 3D against the nebula backgrounds. Looking forward to buying and ripping a copy of Interstellar to watch it with.

Thanks for mentioning that turning off fullscreen mode allows running of 3D games. Very handy for running a lot of older 3D games that are not rift compatible. (I didn't know that till I read it here.)

The other extremely useful feature was hotkeys. An Xbox 360 controller with joy2key can be used as great remote control and mouse. I mapped the recenter, zoom in/out to buttons and it allows me to dynamically zoom in and out on video/games/whatever.

    Ok, so a couple requests:

I do have a need for disabling head tracking. Preferably with a hotkey to enable/disable For two reasons:

One, for programming applications. I don't need to build in rift support immediately, I can load up this app and see how the app would work in VR space. However, some of the apps don't agree at all with having the head tracking turned on. On the DK1, I could just unplug the USB, but DK2 needs the usb.

Two, if I'm running an old FPS or other game and want use the head tracking as a mouse emulator, it's much more effective. On the DK1, I've been using an xbox360 controller for moving the characters, and the head tracking for fine aiming. It's a superb arrangement, and far superior to using only a controller.

Second request is easy, hotkey for the curved/flat screen option. That'll get remapped through joy2key.

    A couple other ideas:

Possible to incorporate head tracking as a mouse controller? IE, lock the virtual screen and then have the mouse cursor follow the head tracking. Ideal for FPS's and games that use the mouse for looking around. (I'm using another app, but it'd be nice to incorporate it all together.)

Any thoughts to setting up remote desktop sessions as extra windows? Could be a way to set up extra monitors.

Remappable hotkeys for virtual desktop? Some games/apps like to have those function buttons enabled.

Anyway, thanks again! I'll be experimenting with this app for a while.

I'm running into a persistent issue that is really ruining my experience with VR Desktop. I'm not sure if its been reported before or if its only me so I figured I would make a quick post to see if anyone has a solution. Windows 8 Live Thumbnail Preview makes my taskbar appear on the bottom of my display on my Rift when using it in VR Desktop. If I dont mouse over an item on my taskbar then it works fine. The second I mouse over long enough for the live preview to come up then all of a sudden my taskbar appears and will not go away. I can only just see if out of the corner of my eye but it is really distracting. The only way I can get it to go away is to restart VR Desktop.

Just one thing: Can you make it work when I have nothing but the DK2 attached? (I need that setup for a project)
