Hello and welcome to what I hope will be the best topic for the non Developers, non PC experts guide to enjoy the most of your new Oculus Rift.

I hope you all help me to create a topic that will not only educate the average Oculus supporter, but will prevent hundreds of simple questions topics.

Ok, lets begin.

SPECS.

This is quite a big topic here, but lets make it simple, the oculus rift generates a duplicated monitor with SBS stereoscopic 3D, that means that it will requiere a little bit more effort for your GPU to create the 3D, not much, and mostly will be compensated by the low res that the oculus uses right now so no biggie, simple as this, IF YOUR RIG CAN RUN THE GAME WELL IT WILL RUN WELL ON THE OCULUS.

Any medium range graphic card can run mostly well the oculus designed demos.

Now on to the technical, to recreate the best VR experience is recommended that the game has Vsync, antialliassing on near max and can keep a steady FPS count, 30 or 60 but steady.

DEMOS.

Here is a list of sites that can help:

This is for slender the arrival, but it gives a very good idea on how does vireio is used. And most important, youtube is your friend, before asking, check youtube videos on the game you want to play.

Okay, so now that we are in "OP approved" thread title correction mode, what about that "i before e except after c" rule, eh? And regarding possessive pronouns, shouldn't there be an apostrophe in "Beginners" while we are at it? Although plural Beginners' is sometimes used, the singular Beginner's is much more common in book titles, so I recommend that.

Yeah, that triple faux pas thread title will eventially get "more better", eh? 😉

Do you have any tips for what looks better, the oculus slider out all the way out or in? Is there any difference in picture quality or pixel size?

Sliding the eyecups further away from the mask doesn't improve the quality for me however, sliding them out when demoing the rift to someone who is using eye glasses helps their comfort greatly. I've also notice this reduces mascara left on the lenses by the ladies haha.

This is a great thread as I consider myself an enthusiast (can't wait for a consumer version  ), but I'm also an aspiring developer. I must admit that the rift is the reason I'm interested in vr development. I'm following all the tutorials on 3D Buzz for UDK. I'd like to be able to create something before my Rift arrives. I have some experience in web development and Flash (a liitle ActionScriot too), but I'm brand new to 3D and VR environments.

I'm really excited and any help is appreciated. I do have a question. Which is a better game engine UDK or Unity for a beginner? I've leaned towards UDK right now but if you think Unity is better I might re-consider. Also do I need to know how to code in order to use these engines? If so what programming language?

Thank you all,

Gus

UDK is perfect for beginners, because it is one of the most complicated and widely used engines in the market. There's nothing better than honing your edge against UDK, as the experience directly translates to furthering your career. The $2500 per dev and 25% of gross over 50k is a pittance compared to the cost of building a homegrown engine in the vast majority of cases.

As for what languages you should learn, you should learn C++, C#, and Java.

Isn't it $99 instead of $2500? (assuming we're talking about development of a product directed to an end user)

Yeah, 99 bucks is correct. I didn't read the page too closely apparently.
