Rift, The Rift, F**k**g Oculus Rift

Whatever you call it, the powers that be want you to call it "Rift", personally I see that as a bit of an uphill struggle ( Oculus does seem to like to make life difficult for itself though) or like King Canute trying to hold back the tide..

Does anybody, sensible, refer to the Rift as anything other than "the Rift" ?

Well, it is a Rift, so calling it anything other than a Rift is silly.

You don't call your XBox a "Microsoft", your PlayStation a "Sony" or your GTX980 a "NVIDIA". Same for the Rift. You can call it a Rift, an Oculus Rift, The Rift, whatever. But it's certainly not an "Oculus". Anyone not calling it a Rift should be corrected. :P

I think he's pointing out the difference between calling it "Rift" and "the Rift/ a Rift."

    Compare:
"I really would like to see some RPGs for Rift"

    vs

"I really would like to see some RPGs for the Rift"

I think that's what he's saying. And yeah, I've always wondered why Oculus refers to it as just Rift rather than the Rift.

I do ROFL at people who call it the Oculus though.

Ah, yeah, you're right. I think I misread it the first time. personally, I call it "a Rift", since it's a product called "Rift" so I own "A Rift". Although I would still say "I really would like to see some RPGs for the Rift", just as I would say "I really would like to see some RPGs for the PS4".

Actually you just made me realize - often with consoles people DO refer to them this way.

"You hear about that new racing game? It's on PS4"

    "Only on Xbox"

etc. Maybe that's where Oculus got the idea?

Hmm, perhaps you're right. I guess I go both ways depending on context. I would also say "Man, I can't wait to play Uncharted 4 on PS4" or "The Final Fantasy remake is coming out on PS4!". "on the PS4" seems awkward. But I would also quickly say "The PS4 is really lacking good third person RPGs now a days"

This thread reminds me of a dialogue scene from the movie, Fight Club:

"Nine times out of ten it's an electric razor, but every once in a while... it's a dildo. Of course it's company policy never to imply ownership in the event of a dildo... always use the indefinite article 'a dildo', never 'your dildo'"

I think I know what Oculus is trying to do, it is trying to convey the experience rather than the hardware but I still think it's all rather a pretentious up hill battle.

    Seems plausible.

But yeah, I just call it the Rift.

Yes so many people including so called pro media journalists calling it the "Oculus". It's pathetic really and just shows that if they [media] can't even get the name right then why trust their opinions on anything. If we're going to get all technical then I suppose the "Oculus Rift" is correct.

I think maybe that's because Oculus is an interesting and unusual sounding word and maybe it just sticks in people's brains better than Rift. I dunno, I'm only speculating. But yeah "Let me put on the Oculus" and such always makes me ROFL. Yeah, go ahead and put on that Oculus. Yeah, just like that baby. I love it when you put on the Oculus.

I agree, all of them work.

"The VR" and "The Oculus" never works.

The problem is that it's been called the rift since the DK1.
Just refering to it as the Rift, could be DK1, DK2 or CV1.

This is why I now call the CV1..well..the CV1 lol

When I'm gaming and say "I'm in the Rift". I'm actually saying I'm in VR and using an Oculus product :/

I'm an Oculus RIFT kind of guy.

Bit like saying Ford Mondeo, Or Logitech G290.

Most people haven't heard of Oculus or Rift TBH, and you end up saying virtual reality goggles. Then just say, "fuck it, just try them on" ;)

I do need to start showing people with disposable income though. Every one goes wow I need one of them, Then you tell them the price along with a P.C. that can run it and they start crying. Had my Sisters boyfriend nearly wetting himself with excitement last night playing Project cars

I can't tell you how many times I hyped up VR to friends/family, and to them it's just some dollar store gimmick, even once they actually use it they can't quite grasp the full scope of the technology involved to bring this to life, it's just a "toy". It's like they think I picked it up at the mall for 30 bucks or something. Honestly, it's almost insulting.

It's usually not until I start explaining the price of entry they start taking me more seriously, but they still think it's "just another goofy 3d glasses thing" and I'm just crazy for not waiting 6 months for the price to go down to reasonable levels.

Of course these aren't your normal tech-interested people, these are mostly just your run of the mill average idiots. You know the ones, they're the ones when you bought your fancy 42" 4k TV for 3 grand they told you you were ripped off because their 62 inch 1080p plasma TV was only $400. Some people are just absent minded I guess.

I sometimes say "The Rift" and sometimes just "Rift" depending on the context. There is also times where "a Rift" makes more sense to me. F.ex i could say "i own a Rift" or "Have you tried the Rift" or "Rift is a VR HMD" etc.

To me it should be refered to as (The) Rift.

Oculus is the company. Rift is the product.

People don't say, I have a Sony, they say I have a Playstation (insert number here)

I hear more people saying: I have an Iphone than people saying, I have an apple

In cars it is slightly more common to say: I have a Ford, but it's more informative to lead with, I have an F150

The only reason this even exists in my book is because Oculus really only has 1 product.

Regardless, it's not REALLY a problem now is it?

Hell, my mate consistently refers to it as "Porngoggles"

Yes, the product is 'Rift', and the company is 'Oculus'.
But calling it 'Oculus' seems more natural for almost everybody. I've heard some real vr pros refer to their Rift as 'Oculus'.

Honestly? I call it whatever word pops into my head first.

Rift, The Rift, The Oculus, headset.
You still know what I'm talking about.

It's just like how I refer to the Xbox One as:

Xbox One, Xbone, Bone, X1, Xbox Wii60.
You still know what I'm talking about.

So if you still know what I'm talking about, what does it matter what I call it? Sure it has an official name, but if there's no confusion here, then I'd say this is pretty much a non-issue.
