I think you are a grown man, start acting like one...  I hate this YouTube generation of kids that would rather watch other people play games than just play the games themselves...

Oh crap what was that... Oh Shhh.. Oh... it's a loading screen.

Seriously?

@benplace what you have here is person # 9,833,625 trying to cash in on the coattails of other big Youtubers (like Pewdiepie) who have made lots of money being purely hyperbolic when playing video games.  It's the scourge of youtube for serious gamers, but there is an audience for it (mostly kids and immature adults) and sometimes it can be quite amusing. It has to be viewed as a form of comedy which is pretty subjective.

Caspersight has just started his channel which means he joins the massive list of millions of Youtubers who think they are going to make it by posting the same stuff that's seen elsewhere. Sadly very few last the distance and even fewer make it big enough to be worthwhile. I genuinely say good luck to him but he's several years too late imo. The heyday for growing an audience and being original was around 6-8 years ago. Now there's massive corporate investment  in select channels, TV studios moving into Youtube, people approaching Youtube as a business and channels with high production values to compete against. It was always a tough campaign and now it's even harder. The only way he's going to make it is if an investor or talent scout sees some sort of ways they can make money out of him and gives him a break.

I've offered some advice before within my network (Fullscreen) to new Youtubers and in this instance, if he really enjoys just making videos then keep on doing it for fun and don't worry about the subscribers or ad revenue. Maybe one day he'll make that one video that's AWESOME and gets noticed. Perhaps this is the lure for many new channels that they'll get a lucky break.

As for a generation watching rather than playing, I believe you shouldn't paint all channels with the same brush. I've just posted a gameplay preview of RollerGirls for example which shows some gameplay with no hyperbole commentary. Simply to showcase the game for those wanting to see more of it in action before they make a decision to buy it. Sure, people can use Steam's refund policy but it's a safer bet to just watch a video to get a feel for it. You also have to consider some people are very much into the gaming thing but might not have the means to buy/play games - remember Youtube is a global thing and those in poorer countries might just want to watch to see what's happening. There's also people out there that can be quite entertaining when they are playing (without being hyperbolic) and have built up their fans for just being that.

I think you guys should give this dude a break, he seems to be having fun with it. That in of itself is worth a watch (If you're into that) if not there is a saying from ages past, if you don't have anything nice to say it's better to say nothing at all. Instead of pissing on this guy just because you don't like it, click the close button and move onto something that does interest you. OP keep doing what you're doing if you enjoy it (seems like it) you'll probably get less jumpy over everything with some more horror plays.

Well I feel strange saying this... but I think you guys are being a little too harsh 😮

First of all, the whole "watch me play" market isn't just for kids. In fact, I wager that there are more hard-working adults watching these videos than actual kids. I say that because over the years I have been on-site with many different organizations, and I always see someone with a gaemplay video on-screen.

True-story: about 3 years ago it started driving me crazy that no matter where I went I would see at least 2 people with a video running on-screen that showed a video game in action. To give this context, I have been a software developer focusing heavily on national contracts in the U.S. (both military and corporate segments). Most often it was a First Person Shooter I saw playing at someones workstation. Up to that point, I never watched much on YouTube aside from anything with kittens, news bloopers, and endless loops of this:

I started ranting at happy hours about how gamers are becoming so egotistical that they spend hours at work watching themselves playing video games. Until finally a buddy was like, "No Zenbane, you dumbass. There are all these 'Let's Play' videos on YouTube taking the world by storm. They are watching other people play games." My initial reaction was similar to @benplace up there, "wtf is happening to the world when we'd rather watch people play instead of gaining the skill to play these games ourselves?"

As time passed, my work schedule and family life grew drastically. Not only did my happy hours decrease, but so did my gaming time. Next thing you know, I'm watching someone play the latest Fallout game because there's no damn way I have time for that. I've spent a total of 1 hour watching people PvP in the Division's "dark zone," while writing software at work... and then I come home to family life until the house sleeps and I get to enjoy some Virtual Reality. There's no way in hell I have time to install and play Division myself without sacrificing Virtual Reality time, and that sure as sheit aint gonna happen.

There is something great about being able to watch people play games that we once-dedicated-gamers no longer have time for as we attempt to move up the economic ladder.

Aside from that, let's also keep in mind that we are on a forum where at least 2 of us in this thread have won the Poster of the Week title, and more will follow. So, Shadow, while you are kinda valid in the things you say, remember that it would kinda be like shunning you for winning the "Poster of the Week" after I won it lol

Everyone here is making posts with the obvious hope that someone will read it. Whether to offend, entertain, or enlighten, each of us imagines that our words have an impact. Mr. wannabe YouTuber up there aint no different.

My advice to @Caspersight,

1) Upload your videos to YouTube and market them in a more subtle way.
2) Spend your time on this forum interacting with members.
3) Don't really mention your YouTube videos much at all when posting here.
4) The more people like you, the more they will try to find out more about you.
5) Keep a link to your YouTube channel on your forum profile; that will be enough.
6) Stop getting scared at loading screens.

Overall I think your personality is entertaining. And if we learned anything from Angry Joe's YouTube fame: he became much more famous when he was way less "angry" and way more "Joe." Cheers!

So Zenbane....Umm you know most employers would discourage the act of watching these videos at work, right?

Just to be clear guys don't ignore the part where I said: "if he really enjoys just making videos then keep on doing it for fun and don't worry about the subscribers or ad revenue."

I did not say he should give up.

I have a lot of experience with advice for starting/smaller Youtube channels, most likely more than you guys telling me to give him a break. I am giving him a break. I am being realistic having seen 1000s of other similar youtube channels like his. There are so many wannabe youtube channels on my network and in my circles all in the same boat and it's those who take heed to sound advice and better themselves that are the ones who stand a greater chance of success if that's what they are after.

However, there's a danger that people come to forums (not just this one), not participate at all in the community and use it as a platform to spam their Youtube videos hoping to get some extra hits - it certainly worked in this case as I watched both of his videos in their entirety.  I think y'all know what I'm talking about. It's poor etiquette and I've mentioned this about some other people on these forums before (and surprise surprise they gave up in the end not mentioning any names because there's few views to be gained from posting Youtube videos here). IMO there a line between posting Youtube content that's useful to others and just spamming your latest video for the lols and potential hits.

And you can still call me a meanie all you like but putting it in perspective. He posted this thread (see below) to promote his first Dreadhalls video and it has 188 views (he could have just updated that thread and promoted both his videos in one swoop but instead went for a new topic).

https://forums.oculus.com/community/discussion/40654/new-oculus-rift-dedicated-youtube-channel-so-fu...

His first Dreadhalls video has 63 views which not all will have come from these forums.  So the conversion from thread views to video views isn't that great, but every little helps.

Not in the Info Tech departments lol

I've PvP'd just about every boss I ever had.

"I have a lot of experience with small Youtube channels, most likely more than you guys"

Shadow, I want you to take a moment to think about what you just said right there lol

*waits*

Okay if you still think you made a valid point then I will counter with this: YouTube exists on the Internet, and I seem to have way more experience with the Internet than likely most of you guys 😛

"IMO there a line between posting Youtube content that's useful to others

If we replace "latest video for the lols and potential hits" with "Porn", then you suddenly will promote the effort for free.

@ Zenbane, that's funny but I hope you are being facetious unless I could have phrased that better... You were probably waiting for the opportune moment to bring up the VR porn games  (again). Well there you go.  Revel in you moment whilst I go and have a digital w**k.

 😉

I apologize Caspersight if I come across course, but will publicly say if you want some more advice then feel free to PM me and I'll gladly offer you some pointers. Same goes for anyone else.

Yeah I'm just using mild rhetoric for the sake of entertainment, only half of which (maybe less) had a real point. I don't think there is a real issue here; but if it's gonna be talked about, might as well be enjoyable!
