I practiced this week by free handing a wolf skull from photo references. It's pretty inaccurate from a scientific point of view, but still looks cool, I guess. Total modeling time was about 2 hours. 🙂

Very good natural naturalistic effects. The rocks, the trees, even the blades of grass. Did you have to do the grass blade by blade?  The patience required makes me shudder!

I made a comb-like stamp and kind of took advantage of low frame rate to randomly paint in the grass. It went pretty quickly.

The tree bark, on the other hand, was a real pain. Every line of bark was manually painted, and I had to go slow enough to prevent aliasing.

I spent some time tonight getting used to the changes in the new update by practicing old-creepy-guy wrinkles on a model I made prior to the update. Getting better. The reference pictures and smooth-tool intensity slider really help a lot. 🙂

I haven't uploaded anything in a while, and this is why....

This is still a work in progress. I just wanted to show it off now, because I'm not sure how much time I'll have in the next few weeks to work on it. So it might not get finished for a month or two.

If it looks like I've put a lot of time into this, it's because I have. I started this about three weeks ago and have probably got 40 hours of solid work in it so far. I suspect It'll take another 20 or so hours to finish it. It started out as just another dragon/lizard/thing in an uninteresting pose, and then evolved into this battle scene. This is, above and beyond, the most complex 3D model I've ever created.

Ubiquitous joke: I just got back from using Oculus Medium, and by are my arms tired. 😉

I wish I were kidding. Every wrinkle is a brush stroke, and my arms ache just looking at them. I needed to go over areas multiple times to get the effect I was looking for. It's erase, redo, erase, redo, ad nauseam.  This would be soooo much easier if we had ZBrush-style alpha brushes. So, I seriously hope that's coming this year before my arm mutinies and amputates itself. I'm not sure that I even want to do another model like this until we have some texturing tools.

Anyway, just leaving this here for now. I'll finish it eventually, bit by bit. 🙂

Seriously impressive man! I hope you can finish it, the pose is awesome! It's like a Yin-Yang 🙂

Holy shit, mate, that surface detail is above and beyond. It's making my arms sore just looking at it. And yeah, alphas (both sculpt and paint) have been pretty much items 1 thru 500 on my wishlist since day one.
