HTC Vive Deluxe Audio Strap: dont get it Wet

Funny read about HTC's new "Deluxe" strap:

http://www.revvrstudios.com/never-get-wet
I left my VR Dungeon and rejoined my family, I noticed some black
‘stuff’ on my shoulders and in my very sweaty hair. I just assumed that
I had brushed up against something in my garage on the way back to the
living room.

I was wrong.

This morning, I had to grab a few items from my VR Dungeon and I
noticed abrasions on the padding of my Vive deluxe strap. Uh oh. Another
quick trip to Twitter confirmed that I wasn’t the only one who noticed
this.

The fact that NOBODY noticed this, is probably a bad thing. I feel like
if I ripped this padding off (it IS completely replaceable) and tossed
it into a glass of water, it would dissolve surprisingly quick. Not the
best material to stick on a part of the body that loves to sweat.

Pretty funny that the makers of the Gadget of the Year, whose gadget revolves around standing room-scale experiences which does lead to sweat far more than sit-down experiences, didn't test their "deluxe" strap's ability to... get wet 😄

@kevinw729 i mean no disrespect here but i have a question.
...

No disrespect if none intended @eldoffor. Will answer the questions as they were intended to be given:

>Why do you turn every conversation into something about arcades or something you've written?

I focus on the Out-of-Home entertainment approach (not just arcade[amusement]) as that is my passion. And I normally focus on stuff I have written as reference to a point being made, so I do not end up like some posters writing a diatribe to explain their view.

>...you had a play in this sector back in the lawnmowerman days and have since been writing stuff about VR like you are some kind of expert on the subject.

I am no expert, but am a specialist in the sector - and did not just "have a play" but worked for a number of corporations developing the stuff, and now consult for a number of the key developers.

>...So I'm wondering why you seem to feel the need to slap up walls of text all the time and turn almost every conversation into a VR arcade discussion.

Ok, I think we can see where you are coming from. I get it you don't like "some kind of expert" making any comments here - especially one that works with Rifts, Vive, StarVR, OSVR, etc,. But as you understand this is a forum and everyone is entitled to their views. Some actually like to talk about the VR arcade stuff (though I know it infuriates others when we start too).

I also would recommend avoiding the "you have to physically own to talk here" argument - as we developers do not usually buy the hardware we use. This forum is for developers as well as consumers. And a word of advice the attempting to "make the forum just for things I like" approach can be limiting. Variety is the spice of life  🙂

Sorry to remind you of your work - but at least I know now where you are coming from. Oh by the way, I hope I answered your question about the VR Arcade sim you asked on the other discussion?

Thanks for the reply, but i only asked one question above and the rest was more explanatory as to why i asked it.
I suppose the answer you gave and the way you gave it sums it up, you live that specific part of the tech and relate most things to it.

Dont get me wrong, i do find VR arcades ( Im still refusing to call it OOH) interesting and the debate around them is a valid one.
But had trouble understanding why every discussion you get involved in ends up being about the same subject, thats all.

This one for example was about disolving vive accessories and vive < rift (standard) and as with most posts it ended up being derailed, i was just wondering why tbh.

Oh, and you got me writing walls of text now instead of working, ive got a solution i need to debug and test before i log off! Dam you!!!

There is actually a separate Developer section of the forum for real developers to discuss issues pertinent to development of VR apps. Although, I think "developer" is used more in the context of "content creators", which may not really apply to your efforts.

This is the Community forum, targeted at end users of VR devices and content. (Not that I'm discouraging developers from popping in and commenting when it's relevant, it's always nice to hear from the creators of the content we enjoy.)

DK2, CV1, Go, Quest, Quest 2, Quest 3.

Need to be careful how you define Niche.

The big problem is many of you use the term "arcade" as if it was still a thing. The arcade industry back in the 80-90 represented "street route" business (operators running a number of amusement pieces in a mall unit). But today the amusement industry represents "Family Entertainment Centers" and Entertainment facilities, combining large numbers of mixed-use entertainment systems.

Arcades are not a thing, its the amusement industry and as cane be seen by the profits being made by Dave & Busters, Chuck E. Cheese and Main Event these are multi-million Dollar corporations seeing great expansion.

Just as an example of how VR plays into the amusement scene lets just look at the brand new The VOID installation in the new FEC opened in Canada. The Rec Room kind of places in perspective the danger of sweeping assumptions when thinking that the amusement model with technology attractions is "niche"!

'VR Arcade' is just the beginning of the story - wait till you see the new 'Location-Based Entertainment' centers coming to the West!

Looks like a normal arcade to me...

indeed.. .the thing i dont get (and sorry @kevinw729 if you have already explained yourself) I dont understand why he seems to think the term arcade is a slur?

I bloody love arcades, and it kills me that the seaside arcades i grew up with in the 80s and 90s are now rotting filled with gamblers and a few screen burned machines with ropy joysticks and stuck firebuttons.

they can rebrand em however they want, if places like the image above make a comeback, i am all over it (tho please include a "retro corner".

I am biased tho. I spent £1500 building a twin stick 2 banks of 6 buttons , with trackball arcade for my man cave... and would never be without it.

I AM convinced there is a market for such a thing to make a comback, in big cities at least.... esp now with LED screens the power use should be a lot less and hopefully they have a longer life before failure... mixing in the classic stuff with the cutting edge... - which is how it always was even back in the day, with your sega R360 and the like on show at the front with the older stuff buried in the back.

edit;... oh and back on topic

the vive strap thing is not only a vive issue.. 😞 the foam around the nose piece of my rift has started to come away and break up 😞
Fiat Coupe, gone. 350Z gone. Dirty nappies, no sleep & practical transport incoming. Thank goodness for VR 🙂

Interestingly... I'm willing to wager than the reason the Vive headstrap dissolved when wet (thus defective) is the result of someone developing the strap without actually owning a Vive HMD.

Developers usually have to buy the equipment they use. That's why so many of them go bust when new console generations start. A PS3 dev kit when they first appeared would have cost you £18,000 and a Wii dev kit by contrast would have cost a developer around £2000. That's why the Wii had so much shovelware.

And the worst thing is that once a developer pays this money they don't even OWN the fucking thing lol. The platform holder can reclaim it at any time and the developer can't legally sell it on.

DK1s and DK2s had to be bought, not sure about the Vive equivalents though.

Developers not needing to buy hardware is the exception and not the rule, even PC developers need to purchase their PCs, software etc when they're developing 'flat' games with an exclusive PC SKU.

Some Vives and Rifts were given to some developers for free but this happening in this industry is VERY rare.

they ARE arcades

rebrand this many times you like, call them out of home your home my home entertainments centre plus 5s, now improved "

and the average person on the street will still call them arcades, that word is cultural across the world, different continents and it is not a bad word.
Look, man. I only need to know one thing: where they are.

I think we need to move this "VR Arcade" topic - off to its own discussion, as I do not want to fall into the comment elboffor made, and this discussion seems to be back on topic - I will title this at Off Topic as "The Scope of VR Arcade"!
