Oculus Runtime Services - Current Status

ShowbizDonkey
Retired Support
We are aware of and actively investigating an issue impacting ability to access Rift software. Our teams apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing you and appreciate your patience while we work on a resolution. We'll share more updates here as we have them. Thanks.

Update:
Hey everyone - This is an issue with our software certification that we're still actively working on. For security, we use a certificate to ensure that the software you receive actually comes from Oculus. That certificate has expired, and we're looking at a few different ways to resolve the issue. We’ll update you with the latest info as available. We recommend you wait until we provide an official fix. Thanks for your patience.

Update #2:
Hey everyone - We're still working hard to resolve the cert issue. We're in the process of integrating an updated cert. Unfortunately, pushing the update out to affected users has some added complexity, as the expired cert blocks our standard software update path. We're working through the options now, and we expect to have more details to share later this evening.

Update #3:

Hey all - thank for your patience. We now have an Oculus software update in place that fixes the issue where Rift may fail to start up. For more info and instructions, please go here: https://support.oculus.com/217157135500529/

Thank you once again for your patience.

Update #4:
Each Rift user impacted by last week's issue and eligible for our $15 Oculus Store credit (or currency equivalent) will see that hit their account within the next few hours. Not sure where to find your credit? Check out this support article: https://support.oculus.com/176820559444065/ ;

If you don't receive store credit but believe you qualified (used the Oculus desktop app on Rift between 2/1/18 and 3/8/18 -- after further consideration we extended the window by a day to account for potential new Rift owners), please contact support: https://support.oculus.com/885981024820727/

Anyone remember when Oculus Home / The Rift, shipped out to customers?  If I remember right, it was March 7th...hmm, now things seem to be coming together...

why not post the updated cert on the forum with instructions on how to install or replace the old cert

Probably because despite the hundreds of posts we represent less than .001% of Oculus users and they need to get it to everyone.  Most people don't even know about the forums.  I wouldn't mind it here too but that wouldn't be very efficient,

You're right that isn't very efficient but at least that would be .001% of the customers who would be a bit happier 🙂

The fact that the entire system was brought down because nobody kept track of a freaking expiration date is INSANE.  Seriously?  We once fired a guy for doing the same thing and it didn't even affect our entire user base.  While the mistakes can happen, you'd think a company that has this many customers wouldn't make such a stupid mistake.

I think someone said that this cert was from 2015. Bet with all the firings and craziness over the last 2-3 years the programmer that handled that file is gone and no one bothered to check.

Responsible companies run audit software to monitor critical file certificate expiry as a matter of course.  Much like if you have sensitive information on a computer, you want to have a security measures in place, firewall, anti-malware etc.  It isn't some guy in a cubical that forgot to pay the phone bill.

I don’t want to hear relax..take a shower etc..those of u who r telling us to calm down please stfu. I just paid $450 for a unit that literally does not even turn on. U SERIOUS?!!! And I hate to admit it but I do feel better that I am not the only idiot looking at their monitor with intense agony. Saying “but it’s hardware? How could software prevent me from using it”. Well within my 14 day return date and looking at the box it came in with the receipt taped on, because I was warned. Tic toc tic toc. Wow what a screw up.

Ok don't relax or shower but it will be fine you just had really bad luck that today was what it was.  I can assure you this is not normal and I have enjoyed many many moths of uninterrupted fun.  Just don't get too upset blowing this our of proportion.  It will get fixed and you will love your Oculus.

Out of “proportion”? Now I know u work for oculus. Not sure if u did but now I know u do. Give me a break!! Is Vive users having this issue?  In case u guys don’t know the tax refund season in the US is right now. People who would normally not be able to purchase these units have the money to do so. I would love to see the amount of sales u guys had in the last 2 weeks ( less than the 14-30 day return policy FYI). And more importantly well within the time a consumer can fall in love your product. Ummmm u guys r screwed...get the bargain bins cleared folks. I am not going to return my oculus. But take those people who made this purchase within the last 48 hours ( I myself did my taxes early just so I can get vr) Not to mention the recent purchase of this company. Omg!!!

your optimistic pro oculus bs is getting me even more upset during an unbelievable outage ( omg I called it an outage??? Like it’s a utility??? Wait I did purchase it right? I’m not leasing it right? I bought it didn’t I?)  then y the hell is it an outage?????????????????

Wow that's something....Its part of the TOS with Oculus. Sometimes life happens; why are you letting it upset you?

I find it a little sad that, so many people blow up on oculus when they have been so great to us for so long.  I mean every weekend we get to try a free game and then oculus has funded so many good games.  Oculus has contributed to the success of VR and I think everyone reading this can agree that we want VR to be successful.  Now, I was very disappointed when I went to launch my oculus home software today and that evil error message popped up.  I had been looking forward to playing some VR more than usual as my internet connection was lousy last night and ruined my echo arena matches.  So it was a draining experience for me today when I couldn't play VR, but I am not ready to throw Oculus under the bus for it.  Cross your fingers that it is fixed tomorrow.

+1... I missed a night of iRacing over this, but will I ever sim race on a regular monitor again? Heck no!

@tbhausen  Same here.  I have had my Rift for a week and I don't think I could do iRacing on a flat monitor again.

Well, Oculus Staff, I know plenty of people are going to give you crap for this so I will be the nice guy today. I know the consequences of not renewing certificates properly in an enterprise environment so I kind of know how y'all feel right now... well except Facebook didn't give me billions or anything like that... in fact I make less than 55,000 a year so well I guess that justifies me more than you, but I still feel some of your pain. Don't worry though, I fixed my issue when it happened so I'm sure you will fix yours. It was the hard way to fix it, but it doesn't matter because you won't make the same mistake twice.

and you'd think nasa wouldnt make a simple high school math mistake where they didnt convert imperial system to metric and cause a million dollar space craft to crash into mars did you?
