Update:
Hey everyone - This is an issue with our software certification that we're still actively working on. For security, we use a certificate to ensure that the software you receive actually comes from Oculus. That certificate has expired, and we're looking at a few different ways to resolve the issue. We’ll update you with the latest info as available. We recommend you wait until we provide an official fix. Thanks for your patience.

Update #2:
Hey everyone - We're still working hard to resolve the cert issue. We're in the process of integrating an updated cert. Unfortunately, pushing the update out to affected users has some added complexity, as the expired cert blocks our standard software update path. We're working through the options now, and we expect to have more details to share later this evening.

Update #3:

Hey all - thank for your patience. We now have an Oculus software update in place that fixes the issue where Rift may fail to start up. For more info and instructions, please go here: https://support.oculus.com/217157135500529/

everything else aside a cock up of this magnitude makes me wonder how capable they are as a company as a whole... not just tech, plenty of great engineers gone broke

The fact that the entire system was brought down because nobody kept track of a freaking expiration date is INSANE.  Seriously?  We once fired a guy for doing the same thing and it didn't even affect our entire user base.  While the mistakes can happen, you'd think a company that has this many customers wouldn't make such a stupid mistake.


and you'd think nasa wouldnt make a simple high school math mistake where they didnt convert imperial system to metric and cause a million dollar space craft to crash into mars did you?

Ok don't relax or shower but it will be fine you just had really bad luck that today was what it was.  I can assure you this is not normal and I have enjoyed many many moths of uninterrupted fun.  Just don't get too upset blowing this our of proportion.  It will get fixed and you will love your Oculus.


Out of “proportion”? Now I know u work for oculus. Not sure if u did but now I know u do. Give me a break!! Is Vive users having this issue?  In case u guys don’t know the tax refund season in the US is right now. People who would normally not be able to purchase these units have the money to do so. I would love to see the amount of sales u guys had in the last 2 weeks ( less than the 14-30 day return policy FYI). And more importantly well within the time a consumer can fall in love your product. Ummmm u guys r screwed...get the bargain bins cleared folks. I am not going to return my oculus. But take those people who made this purchase within the last 48 hours ( I myself did my taxes early just so I can get vr) Not to mention the recent purchase of this company. Omg!!!

Wow that's something....Its part of the TOS with Oculus. Sometimes life happens; why are you letting it upset you?


You never know.  I know people for who their gaming and such is a lifeline for them for various reasons.  If he's that upset it could be an over-reaction or it could just be really important to him.  You never know why people react the way they do but his frustration is obviously real and I hope for him and others who are really put off that they get resolution soon.  I just want to play my games, but it's not that earth-shattering for me, but it could be for some.

Oculus has everyones email address.  Shouldn't be to hard to a link to dl a hotfix.

I mean I just bought my Rift not but 3-4 nights ago and have been enjoying it. Woke up today after having a day off from work and discovered it not to be working, now am i upset? A bit..but you know im not going to fret over it. But I will say this it is kinda Ironic the day its everybodies birthday or they just got their rift, something like this happens. I have very a very high patience limit and im still going.

It must be really frustrating for those who didn't even get to play it first and just have a box teasing them.  In the long run I doubt today will matter, glad you're enjoying yours... or were!

Makes sense.  The original Rift was released on March 28th, two years ago.  I figure a couple of weeks prior to get the runtime out of beta and ready for shipment, outfitted with a shiny brand-new two-year SSL certificate.  

I wonder if they can set up a link on the main site for an executable with the patch?  It won't be as elegant as a push upgrade, but it may certainly be more expedient.

It's just hardware, right? I shouldn't have to have software to make it work.


Right. Last time my computer didn’t work because of software it was my fault for watching your moms porn channel. Thanks for playing.
