This is the full email "Hi Katanagirl, We've just released an Oculus software update that fixes an issue where Rift may fail to start up. If you're receiving the error “Can't Reach Oculus Runtime Service,” you'll need to manually update your Oculus software before you can use your Rift. To patch your Oculus software, you'll need to download 'OculusPatchMarch2018.exe' at https://www.oculus.com/rift-patch/. Run the executable, and select “Repair”. When the update is finished, launch the Oculus desktop app to continue the update process. Once the update is complete, you'll be able to use your Rift. A step-by-step walkthrough is available here: https://support.oculus.com/217157135500529/ A manual update is only necessary if you're unable to start the Oculus desktop app - if you aren't seeing an error, the system will update itself to the new version automatically. We’re very sorry for the disruption today. We’re providing a $15 Oculus Store credit (or currency equivalent) to people impacted by this issue. If you used Rift on or after February 1st, 2018 this credit will be added to your account automatically within the next 7 days. See this page for info about Oculus Store credits. Sorry again for any inconvenience this may have caused, and thanks for choosing Rift. - The Oculus Team"
That is very nice, but..............I use my Oculus DK2 everyday so I fall in that broad category. However, I am skeptical that DK2 users will be compensated. Hope I am mistaken of course. Oculus doesn't seem to be interested in people using their older equipment, as far as I know, the Windows 7 KB update error was never addressed?

    Cheers AussieStig

    Hi Aussie!

Please don't assume Oculus doesn't care about you.  Ask them!  Yesterday had to be a highly stressful day and they may still be working on things and it is possible that while trying to make things right, they missed something.  Does not mean they don't care or you aren't valuable.

If you are using older equipment and you were affected I am willing to bet they'll compensate you too.  Just let them know you're concerned you were left out and give them a chance to realize they goofed in either not notifying you, wording their compensation badly, or by oversight.

All of the concerns of yesterday... getting a patch done, apology, compensation were all addressed... I have no doubt this will be too.

    #rootingforyou!
We shall see mate, fingers crossed, but I wont hold my breath. I am sure their day yesterday was far more hectic than people may appreciate. I have sent a support request will keep you posted here. Cheers, AussieStig

Well Oculus, wil your gesture only extend to CV1 users? Don't forget it was the DK1 and 2 users that put you where you are today. I am sure there are many DK1 or 2 users that were using their devices after February 1st whose HMDs were also bricked by your lack of diligence. Can they expect an email today with $15.00 store credit as well?
They gave the Kickstarters FREE CV1's... Also YOU didn't PUT anyone anywhere. That's ridiculously condescending. It take several years of education focus and drive to learn to code, then to learn how to invent something as radical as Virtual Reality, then getting the balls and money to create prototypes and then to find investors.... So PLEASE save your hierarchical tyrannical rant. You aren't in a position of power here; so learn to understand your weaknesses and ask privately and nicely when you need a handout.

Since he has been an early investor by means of Kickstart AND he did ask nicely ( eventhough you disagree), your rant is defenitely moot.

Why would you care if Oculus would compensate him or any other DK-user like they have done with CV1 users ? It' s not coming from your own pocket now, is it ?

Aussie is a great guy and hopefully he and everyone else will be compensated.  Asking on page 70 of a forum post is a bad place to be heard.  Everyone needs to contact support directly to ensure being heard.

I would just caution everyone not to over-react and feel slighted so quickly.

Yesterday people were up in arms that Oculus was going out of business and a patch wasn't coming - patch done
Yesterday people were upset that Oculus wouldn't take responsibility and apologize - they did
Yesterday people were demanding compensation even before the issue was fixed - compensation was given

Just make yourself heard.  Oculus has always dealt with me in a first rate manner and pretty sure they will everyone too if people just chill and not expect the worst.

I'm guessing the end solution will be to uninstall and reinstall the whole thing, complete with shiny new driver signage and hopefully some much needed hole patching so that this doesn't happen again.

Actually... now that I see that changing the system clock works, we can probably all do that in order to let the program download the latest update.

We'll probably be instructed to set out clocks to a specific Day and Time, launch OH, and let the Installer run.
Or prob a simple installer that patches the exe with the correct certifcation, thats how I would do it anyway.
Sure that would be usable by anyone (knowing the installer) and would not require a huge download...
It wouldn't be a huge DL at all, just a small .bat file that fetches the new cert and applies it to the exe. Exe is only maybe a few MB's in size.

Remember that we can still run the installer program without changing the clock, that is what its there for, once you hit the "Repair" button it will do what the Oculus app does in the background -> look for the most up to date release of the runtime then download and install <-

It is basically a workaround if your Oculus client fails to boot after an update and then they release a new update to fix it and you need to force that installation.

Except when that updater uses the same expired cert...

Can we look at the bright side now, this will go in the history of VR tech as the first global vr blackout , and now we know how to take down the Matrix in case of any VR human slavery attempt happening in the future wink

This would get fixed a lot faster if they just provided a DL for a new certificate so we can renew it ourselves, it's not hard. Instead we're at their mercy.

Have you read the posts of some of these folks? It would not just be hard, it would be astronomically improbable for some. Half of them would try printing out the Certificate, Framing it, and wondering why the Rift doesn't see it.
I get the joke and all, but not everyone is as tech savvy as others. Oculus is just looking for a more elegant and streamlined solution, which will be interesting to see since the software can't run as it is, hopefully it won't require a re-set up of the whole suite.
I’m not a software programmer just a tech enthusiast but I can only imagine a new setup.exe is in the works. Make everyone uninstall then reinstall with the new setup file? Just my thoughts
Just the thought of downloading installation for another 2 hours after fix is out

    Update #2:
Hey everyone - We're still working hard to resolve the cert issue. We're in the process of integrating an updated cert. Unfortunately, pushing the update out to affected users has some added complexity, as the expired cert blocks our standard software update path. We're working through the options now, and we expect to have more details to share later this evening.
Well its been 12 1/2 hours since update #2 , we are well into late night , got any news for us or updated security cert ?

And no offline installer yet, still, after 2 years?  Common.
This is the most absurd part. I don't get why it can't work like drivers for any other device ever made. Not even printer drivers require internet access just to work.
And when you get unfavorably compared to printer drivers, you know you're in deep ****

Unfortunately, we don't live in a world where any of what your suggesting is financially viable, the way things have been implemented in software are for a reason. The reason the certification process exists is to stop you from unknowingly installing an update that has been compromised. It is not like a monitor and not a typical peripheral, we are not yet at a point of VR development where we can afford to have it as a standalone product that works with any software you like.
all of what you just said has just reinforced my decision to go elsewhere
works fine with the ONLY software i use rift for (DCS World)
if the hardware worked offline without the cert, i wouldnt be here
    thank you

Wow, I take a short nap and you all grab the pitchforks and start beating each other to death.  Let me tell you a little tale about one of the most successful pioneering games in MMO history called Ultima Online.

Ultima Online was one of the first massive online games, it was remarkable in its scope and a lot of fun.  It was also remarkable for epic customer service failures.  This was a game where you would put in 8+ hours per day (if you were a lightweight, 12+ if you were s REAL gamer) building something... your character, a home, etc.  Your time put in mattered as it was a persistent world.

Patch day would come every few days or maybe a week and something was always ALWAYS wrong.  People couldn't log in for hours or days.  One time when we finally did log in, the error had been so bad that they had to roll the game back 2 WEEKS.  Imagine 100+ hours of your life just vanished.  Guess what we got.

    Sorry folks.

    That was it.

People quit... for a day or 2... stomped their feet, yelled and screamed.  In the end it was a game and it was fun and in tech, sh*t happens.  It doesn't mean everyone is incompetent or needs to be shot.

Take a breath.  Allow people to be human, especially when the error didn't kill you or those you love.

Does it suck?  Yeah, kinda.  But how are you harmed?

Breathe, it will work out and be fine.
omg, I remember ultima online......i cannot tell you how many times i got killed when my dialup quit and left me standing in the middle of nowhere while i had to dial back in....that really sucked.

Lol yup.  As far as the companies go I find Oculus to have been very reliable so far.  I have seen so much worse.  When I was playing Ultima (8 years old) unexpected downtime was pretty distressing... I'm 21 now, I take stuff like that with a grain of salt and realize in the grand scheme of things how unimportant a day of downtime is.  I actually got a lot accomplished today and made quite a few friends on here :-)
what other stuff do you play?  I have always been a huge gamer.....started gaming when pong came out and have not looked back...lol

And I hate to admit it but I do feel better that I am not the only idiot looking at their monitor with intense agony. Saying “but it’s hardware? How could software prevent me from using it”. Well within my 14 day return date and looking at the box it came in with the receipt taped on, because I was warned. Tic toc tic toc. Wow what a screw up.
Oh man, my whole computer is tied to software... What happens if the OS craps out?

It's just hardware, right? I shouldn't have to have software to make it work.
Right. Last time my computer didn’t work because of software it was my fault for watching your moms porn channel. Thanks for playing.

That is taking it a bit too far don't you think?

I mean unlike the Rift his moms porn channel is still working

    :)
    LMFAO

Guys and gals. At this point I can assure I am not as upset as I sound. To be honest i just find it very difficult to take when I pay money for a product that simply will not work. At all... not to mention I just purchased this thing when I could have picked a different mfg. but didn’t because the idiot at Best Buy ..........grrrrrRRRRRRRR IM GETTING MAD AGAIN.

Ok don't relax or shower but it will be fine you just had really bad luck that today was what it was.  I can assure you this is not normal and I have enjoyed many many moths of uninterrupted fun.  Just don't get too upset blowing this our of proportion.  It will get fixed and you will love your Oculus.
Out of “proportion”? Now I know u work for oculus. Not sure if u did but now I know u do. Give me a break!! Is Vive users having this issue?  In case u guys don’t know the tax refund season in the US is right now. People who would normally not be able to purchase these units have the money to do so. I would love to see the amount of sales u guys had in the last 2 weeks ( less than the 14-30 day return policy FYI). And more importantly well within the time a consumer can fall in love your product. Ummmm u guys r screwed...get the bargain bins cleared folks. I am not going to return my oculus. But take those people who made this purchase within the last 48 hours ( I myself did my taxes early just so I can get vr) Not to mention the recent purchase of this company. Omg!!!

your optimistic pro oculus bs is getting me even more upset during an unbelievable outage ( omg I called it an outage??? Like it’s a utility??? Wait I did purchase it right? I’m not leasing it right? I bought it didn’t I?)  then y the hell is it an outage?????????????????
Idk man, literally every piece of technology that you own long enough will stop working at some point. Doesn't really matter why it stops working, software, hardware, w/e. If its not working, its not working. I don't understand the outrage over something you can't control and that will happen eventually. Yeah, it sucks that its out, I'd love to be playing the one game I bought a Rift for, but I can't.

I bought my 3rd Sensor during downtime yesterday and will be buying a few other games as well, based my forum journey yesterday.  I had a blast and consider it a blessing in disguise.  The community here is strong. I'm even more pleased with my decision than I was before.  I'm sure there will be plenty of takers for all that used hardware. Hope to see some of you all in the rift.
