The Pimax 8K MEGA Thread - First Reviews Now live

I've been on the fence about this and have some reservations about build quality and performance under heavy load, but for me the positives outweigh the negatives and I guess many others feel the same way. Now I never backed the Rift during its Kickstarter campaign (unfortunately) but I assume the feeling is similar where you're helping to forge the future of VR in some way, or at least like to think so. I consider myself an enthusiast and not the majority, therefore what's another £600 to experience the latest  in VR. Sadly, having Samsung not release the Odyssey here in the UK left me with an itchy wallet finger, a void that needed filling and with GO not releasing until next year either I thought the Pimax 8K will scratch the itch and might just prove to be pretty good too. I'm excited for it.

There is always going to be skepticism and no doubt a number of people will suggest I am backing a paperweight but, that's ok it's fully understandable to have those feelings and that prediction is always a possibility. But... if someone doesn't take the risk and we all play it safe, how can VR move forwards - I guess we've already taken risks with past VR investments in some way or another including with the Rift. I've never claimed any loyalty to anyone having owned The Gear VR (still have that knocking around somewhere) DK2, Vive, Rift, PSVR and come next year Pimax will be added to the list. However, I am interested like many of you agreed in the poll we did here a while back that certain things were important to improve on what we have now and it seems the Pimax 8K is offering some of those things on paper.

I think once you can look past the silly marketing name (8K) and the hammerhead shark design and focus on what's inside, this HMD offers something many claimed they would like in the past but are not prepared to trust Pimax to deliver. I think a number of people would rather wait for a more established company (like Oculus) to offer a similar experience further down the line. All very understandable. But I am impatient, and whilst I use my Rift quite often I want more of what VR can offer sooner rather than later.

So, (and the main reason for this post) is come Feb 2018 some point in 2018 I will gladly post impressions and comparisons without hyperbole and answer questions any of you might have. That said, I expect many others at the time will post their impressions also so there should be plenty of opinions going around from various sources.

The investment by Pimax in releasing something against just sitting on their R&D money from the record breaking Kickstarter is starting to show. Also a level of animosity against Pimax - and a level of entitlement that no matter what they release there will be a line of naysayers. which is a shame, and a reflection on the VR communities about face in allowing companies altitude on the achieved goal.

The NDA is still in place for many of the early adopters, though we can expect a number of operators of Out-of-Home entertainment attractions using Pimax at a coming trade convention in the States, allowing real hands on.

@kevinw729 I don't think its animosity per say, I think it's about managing expectations, and I think PIMAX is suffering a bit from their own Hype. Here is hoping they can pull through and deliver.

We all hope that. Though tempered with a worldly experience!

An update from SweViver and VoodooDE here:

https://old.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/8yk41u/sweviver_and_voodoode_talking_about_the_pimax_m1/

They both say that 'most' of the issues have been fixed. Tbh I would hope that they've ALL been fixed but that doesn't seem to be the case yet.

good news that these issues are mostly fixed however it sounds like we are still a ways off a retail release just yet. Still better to release late and get it right. I am almost certain these kind of bumps have happened with all the vr hmds so far it's just that the people testing say the rift back in beta their lively hoods relied on them keeping quiet.
To be honest this leak is kind of irresponsible. What good can come of it? IF pimax were not actively fixing these issues then fine, but they are. Shame on who ever leaked it
I posted in another thread (maybe another forum) that the plastic looked like that cheap brittle stuff that is libel to crack and that does seem to be the case. Hopefully when it releases it will have some form of rubbery coating on it to protect. (Hell just rip of oculus their coated fabric is genius with no downsides).
All I can say is, esp after the debunking IF I was a pimax backer I would not be too worried. (I would have been before the debunk but that seems to be exactly what the leaker wanted. FUD spreader .
Fiat Coupe, gone. 350Z gone. Dirty nappies, no sleep & practical transport incoming. Thank goodness for VR 🙂

I have to agree with your evaluation of the leak, and the position that backers should be taking - good news that the manufacturer is listening to criticism, and not being too draconian about those infractions of their NDA - but we also have to be mindful of the vested intentions of the leakers.

I disagree with the professional tester idea. They should be given to the people who will use them the most. The end user Joe bloggs imo and let him test it to death. He'll know what's what !!!!

And Pimax are also going to have problems next year too if Oculus do what I'm expecting them to do and release the CV2 with 140 degrees FOV and 4K displays with eye tracking and foveated rendering.

The 200 degree FOV is the diagonal FOV, and the Half Dome's 140 degree FOV is horizontal, meaning that there's only going to be something like 10-20 degrees difference between the two. So Oculus could end up with a headset with the same resolution, a reasonably comparable FOV, a smaller form factor and that doesn't need as powerful a PC to run the thing. And probably at a cheaper price too. :open_mouth:

So even if Pimax solve ALL of the issues with the headset they've got a potentially rocky road ahead of them next year.

I agree - the tech industry tried the "professional tester" route back in the 90's after a spate of "paid" for reviews got busted by the trade. The issue is that both sides of the argument will not be happy with reviews or reviewers.

My key feeling is that the animosity generated by the successful record breaking Kickstarter made it impossible for Pimax to get a clear shot at delivery - they were going to ride the gauntlet, and they should have built up an operation with all their "war chest" to defend themselves. Sadly they thought they could do it themselves - and are paying the price.

I agree Pimax has done some clangers - and we are not out of the woods yet. I think their handling of this point onwards with the V2.2 hardware will make or break this development. That said, Pimax have now sold over 100+ units into the OHH sector, so they are in a strong deliverable position, if not strong with their image.
