The Official Films Thread

Anonymous

Well bollocks, we've got a telly thread so I thought I'd create one for films too.

I'm currently working my way through Movies With A Twist Collection 3 which I downloaded years ago from TPB. All of those torrents are now dead which is a shame because I didn't get around to downloading Collection 4. I'm downloading all of those separately which is a hassle but will be worth it in the end going by 1-3 so far.

Am in the middle of watching Law Abiding Citizen, I think I've seen it before but i was so long ago I've forgotten what happens.

The problem with watching these films knowing that there's a twist makes it easy to work out what the twist in question is so probably better if you watch them without that knowledge lol

Here's a list of some of my all-time favourite films of all-time in no particular order:

Brazil
The Life Of Brian
The Holy Grail
The Meaning Of Life
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Lifeforce (a terrible film but the female lead vampire spends most of it naked lol)
All Lethal Weapons
All Die Hards
Every Dirty Harry Film
The Jungle Book (the Disney original)
Pi
Falling Down (just for the McDonalds scene lmfao)
Silent Running
Logan's Run
All 60s-70s Planet Of The Apes
Soylent Green

Am going to stop there otherwise this post is going to be HUGE lol

I'm ashamed to admit that despite the ridiculous amounts of Porn I've watched throughout my life so far I've NEVER seen Debbie in action. Might have to rectify that! lol 😮 😄

OMG I forgot about Big Trouble In Little China

SUCH A GOOD MOVIE!!!

@kojack yeah, plus King had a huge issue with the female character being just a screaming weak mess, she was meant to be strong and unafraid. The Shining was written during Kings darker times, he was suffering from alcoholism and very bad dreams. He dreamt once that he strangled his kids with a fire hose. (At the Stanley Hotel room 217) the book was almost autobiographical and King felt the movie went in the wrong direction. He also hated that Nicolson was cast.

Man it has been decades since I watched Big Trouble in Little China - that movie used to be on all the time when I was growing up!!!

As far as Kubrick's the Shining goes - yes King's complaints are valid when looking at it in comparison to the book and his story is arguably the scarier one because his characters are that much more human. But Kubrick's version - I don't know, I think it is because of his visual language - the cinematography of his version, the textures, the soundtrack that communicate a story in a way that most King adaptations (not all) cannot match.

I mean most Stephen King movies / mini-series I watch simply because I enjoy his stories so much, but I'd say out of all the King movies listed on Wiki - the following are actually worth watching, and the ones in bold are the ones that I think qualify as good movies in general (not just good Stephen King movies) if you compare my list with wiki list, I have cut out most of the adaptations. Not necessarily because I didn't enjoy those movies or shows (I have watched the majority of that list), but I cut them out because most of those movies are objectively not good movies. The following list are movies I think are watchable - and some of them even worth watching multiple times.

1976 - Carrie - this is an ok movie, and it has aged pretty well but it isn't a mind blowing movie but Carrie was never my favourite King book.
1980 - The Shining - not really much to say, this is a great movie even if it is not a great adaptation.
1983 - Cujo - not really a great film, but it is watchable.
1983 - The Dead Zone - same as Cujo, it is watchable even if it is very slowly paced.
1983 - Christine - probably the cheesiest film on this whole list, it is not great by any means but it is still watchable.
1986 - Stand by Me - this is a good film, it hasn't aged completely gracefully but it is still a good film and one that I have watched many times.
1990 - Misery - this is a very good thriller movie, well worth watching. Excellent performances by the cast.
1994 - The Shawshank Redemption - this is one of those movies that I can watch from what ever scene comes on the TV at any moment, it is in my top 5 films of all time.
1995 - Dolores Claiborne  - I remember this as being a depressing but good film, I haven't watched in a long time. I am honestly not sure how it holds up today.
1998 - Apt Pupil - this is one of those films where I think the liberties the director took really work for the film, the ending in particular is much more sinister than the horrific violent ending of the novel. I have watched this a few times since it's release, it hasn't aged all that well (it is a late 90s movie through and through), but it is entertaining.
1999 - The Green Mile - like The Shawshank Redemption, it is just such a likeable film. The whole cast is great and even though it is very long, it never feels poorly paced.
2001 - Hearts in Atlantis - this is an odd movie, I like the cinematography and the story but I can't say I have watched it more than one time. I'd actually like to revisit this one and see what I think now.
2003 - Dreamcatcher - I recently rewatched this, it is far from a great film but it is an entertaining alien horror film.
2004 - Riding the Bullet - can't remember too much about this one, other than I think that I enjoyed it.
2007 - 1408 - this one still gives me nightmares when I watch it, probably the scariest adaptation of all. It is also a really great film in general, John Cusack and Samuel Jackson are fantastic.
2007 - The Mist - when I saw this in the theaters the first 5 minutes had me thinking "oh no, here we go again another well meaning but completely cheesy Stephen King horror movie", but by 10 minutes in I was hooked and by the time the credits roll I was gut punched. Easily one of my favourite horror movies.
2009 - Dolan's Cadillac - same as Riding the Bullet, can't remember to much but I think it was good.
2017 - It - this is a great film, can't wait for the sequel. Completely trashes the original - it nails the atmosphere of the book despite taking a lot of liberty with the story (changing the time period, and most of the scary encounters completely).
2017 - Gerald's Game - haven't watched this yet, but I have heard good things.
2017 - 1922 - this was a fun watch, the pacing is a little out of sorts but the overall movie was enjoyable.
2017 - Mr. Mercedes - hands down one of my favourite TV shows at the moment, great adaptation.
2018 - Castle Rock  - I am hoping this ends up being good, going to buy it on iTunes soon.

OMG, all the ones you highlighted are my favourites too!!!!!!!!! (Langoliers is a great one too, very good concept, cheap and poor execution 🙂 )

Castle Rock is bloody amazing I HIGHLY recommend it, its Stephen King and JJ Abrams at their best.

There's a new Big Trouble In Little China movie on the way, staring Dwayne Johnson.
It's a sequel, not a remake.
From the president of the production company two weeks ago:
"You can’t remake a classic like that, so what we’re planning to do is
we’re going to continue the story. We’re going to continue the universe
of ‘Big Trouble in Little China.’ Everything that happened in the
original exists and is standalone and I think there’s only one person
that could ever play Jack Burton, so Dwayne would never try and play
that character."

@SimonSays28 - Dreamcatcher, isn't that the one where there's a lot of farting going on? I've never laughed so much in all my life when I watched that horror film. The farting was totally unexpected in it..

I haven't seen the latest It film but I loved the first one, Tim Curry is awesome. 😄

And all of this Stephen King stuff and no mention of Salem's Lot? One of my all time favourite films of all time!

Children Of The Corn was also great too.

The weird thing with me is that I can't stand his books. I just can't read and get into them for some reason...but I LOVE all of the films and telly series based on his books.

LOL, yep that's the one - there was almost a body horror vibe to the whole movie, maybe not as gross as say The Fly or Naked Lunch, but definitely something very human about the horror (and yep, I laugh every time I see it). I think the cinematography in this one was pretty good in this one.

The book is so much better - and it is connected very closely to the Derry series (It, Insomnia, Dreamcatcher, and 11/22/63) - definitely worth the read if you like his books.

Right on - I think as movies they work for everyone, which is why I love them. I am looking forward to Castle Rock so much!!!

I love the Langoliers - but it was definitely one of his movies that is really only going to work for King fans, or people who like low budget movies (I happen to like both).

I think that is really what it amounts to with the majority of his movies is - the concept is usually so bizarre that it really should make a great movie, but because he is unfortunately stereotyped as a horror writer usually his movies get budgeted as such.

I mean completely off topic and probably I could dedicate a whole thread to Stephen King - but I kind of hate how he is type cast as strict horror fiction because is work is so much more layered than that. He usually blends genres - and has an uncanny knack for writing characters that are relatable on a human level. I have read lots of different genres and authors over the years - but anytime I find I haven't read for a long period of time, I pick up one of his books to get me started again.

The original It is so corny - I mean I love it, and it is a more faithful adaptation of the story than the new one (well as faithful to an 1100 page book that you can be, especially one as dense as It). But it is firmly in the B-movie side of his adaptations - where as the new adaptation nails the atmosphere of the book so much more closely while taking liberty with the time period, pacing, and the appearances of Pennywise for each of the characters. Honestly - it is one of my favourite horror movies of all time.

The Salem's Lot movie is in that realm of cheese for me too - I mean it is way better than a Tommyknockers, but not quite a Christine, so I left it off my list. There are probably about 5 or 10 I left off that technically could be added in - but because I had to think on them, I decided to leave them off.

As for his books - you're not the first person I have met who has felt that way. I mean - I love his voice, especially from around '96 on. But outside of a few of his shorter stories - most of his output is fairly dense and layered (but not difficult to decipher), I find some of his concepts are just so bizarre (Insomnia, or the Regulators) but his characters are very relatable which most times for me at least lends a sense of credibility to the surreal shit he writes about.
