Networking and Pi-Hole.....

Digikid1
Consultant
Now THAT headline has GOT to get your attention.  LOL!!!!!

I purchased two Raspberry Pi Canakits from Amazon Canada. ( https://www.amazon.ca/CanaKit-Raspberry-Starter-Premium-Black/dp/B07BCC8PK7/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1... ) and made one a Retropie Build and one a Pi-Hole build. ( For more information on Pi-Hole look here: https://pi-hole.net/ )

I may be an excellent builder and storekeeper but I know next to nothing about networking.  Setting DNS and IP addresses makes my head swim.  Does anyone here know anything about that and what I am doing wrong with that software?

here is the Pi-Hole Log if anyone is interested.

This process collects information from your Pi-hole, and optionally uploads it to a unique and random directory on tricorder.pi-hole.net.

The intent of this script is to allow users to self-diagnose their installations. This is accomplished by running tests against our software and providing the user with links to FAQ articles when a problem is detected. Since we are a small team and Pi-hole has been growing steadily, it is our hope that this will help us spend more time on development.

NOTE: All log files auto-delete after 48 hours and ONLY the Pi-hole developers can access your data via the given token. We have taken these extra steps to secure your data and will work to further reduce any personal information gathered.

As long as one of them is green, and it matches what is in /etc/pihole/setupVars.conf, there is no need for concern.

    What exactly is wrong?

I've never heard of pihole, but the logs don't seem to show anything going wrong. It tested a known adware address and it was correctly routed to 0.0.0.0.

I'm going to guess that the problem you have is that the PC isn't having ads blocked.

(I don't know how much you know about what this is doing, so this is for anybody reading this)
Pihole works as a DNS (Domain Name System). DNS servers are computers that convert URLs like www.oculus.com into IP addresses like 157.240.8.49.
Normally you'd use a DNS from your internet provider, or Google's one (at 8.8.8.8). But instead you redirect your computer to use Pihole on a raspberry pi on your network instead. It passes DNS requests on to the real server, but any known ad address is blocked.

It does look like Pihole is running. So I guess your PC isn't using it. There's a few way to set it up:
    - change router settings to redirect all DNS queries to the pihole
    - use the pihole as a DHCP server (also needs router changes)
    - manually set your devices to use the pihole.

Since every router/cable modem/etc is different, it's hard to say how easy the first two options are. But they would let you block ads for smart tvs, phones, etc.

The third is pretty easy on a PC, which might be a good idea for testing if the pihole is working.
But that depends on which OS you have and if you are running on wifi or ethernet and ip4 or ip6.
So we need a little more info.

Exactly @kojack. Still seeing ads. It wanted me to make a static DCHP and static ip for it through my router. I use a Linksys WRT1900AC V2 with DRT. This is an area that I have no experience at all and would normally get my networking employee to do but unfortunately he passed a couple months ago due to a nasty car accident. I thought that I had done it right but nope.

Running it on ethernet and wifi as recommended. Some things are working....just not all. For example I go to oc3d.com and still get the ads. However On my iPhone the games that forces ads have diminished a bit but not completely.
