If you're a fan of Cyan's work, then this week will be mighty fun for VR Gaming. This is coming to PCVR.

Chuck here, Been at this for three hours now and I've got to take a break. I'm in Manchester, New Hampshire at our sister studio Skymap Games and we're getting prepared for our big launch of ZED tomorrow! Keep in touch with Eagre Games on our Twitter and Facebook to follow along and check out our Steam Page - wishlisting helps us gain traction on Steam too if you're so inclined :0) We'll be checking in over the coming days and doing our best to respond to each and every one of you. We had a great time hearing from all of you. Thanks for your great questions!

Just spent an hour straight in this experience. Really enjoying it, but a few things to note:
  • This is more of a story-telling experience, not so much a game.
  • It has some puzzle elements, but it's really just a single type of puzzle that gets repeated. Similar to the game, Torn.
  • It is more of a "walk around and explore" type of experience, that reminds me a lot of Annie Amber.
  • The overall theme and story reminds me very much of the game, Nevermind. Which I highly recommend.
  • It's Teleport ONLY!

So this is another addition to the story-adventure VR world in experiences like:
  • Annie Amber
  • Nevermind
  • Torn
  • Transference
  • Xing

Although I would place this on a smaller scale (it plays more like an Indie Studio Game), somewhere between Annie Amber and Nevermind.

I'll share screenshots and final thoughts when I complete it.

VRFocus didn't care for it much:

Steam now has 20 positive and 16 negative reviews - not looking very good, or the game is simply completely different from what many expected. I think a walking simulator sounds just as fun as a puzzle game, there're already way too many puzzle games in VR and quite few walking simulators 😉

But releasing Zed same day as Trover might have been a bad decision and cause Zed to receive way too little attention.

Here's my honest comparison to put this in to perspective:

Think of everyone who ordered the Valve Index, and how excited they get to make "hand gestures" in VR. It's not really, in the grand scheme of themes, a very thrilling feature to go from 3-finget gestures to 5-finger gestures. It's like getting excited over having 2 more Smiley Face emoji's available on a discussion forum! Or like getting excited about having your Character/Avatar get a new dance move!

Yet people are excited nonetheless, right? Even on this forum (check the Index thread).

That's how I see ZED. For someone like me who loves the stories and worlds that Cyan creates, I can walk through this relatively small-scale game and enjoy everything. It's nostalgic. But of course, it won't surprise me one bit to see the community split 50/50 on their sentiment towards it.

ZED is not a must-have experience. It doesn't bring anything new nor compelling to VR. There are plenty of other titles that do it on a grander scale, with more complexity. But if you are just a fan of this franchise, then you will likely enjoy it!

Bought Zed yesterday, and maybe because my expectations now were really low I wasn't disappointed  😉 Tried setting ss to 200% in SteamVR and it worked well, even if it's 45 fps. Textures are real PCVR quality, not like recent Quest games, so that's great.
I was expecting this to be a walking simulator, but it seems I need to do a bit of thinking already a few minutes in the game - I'm so furious, I thought this would be a walk in the park  😄

I got a good impression of this game. Devs are working on full locomotion, I'm patient and like waiting for good stuff, not gonna refund this game.

Btw. this game was afaik not made by Cyan, it was made by Eagre Games. Cyan (Cyan Ventures, not Cyan Worlds to be precise) is just the publisher and Cyan Worlds are currently working on a steampunk game called Firmament:

So anyone who's disappointed by ZED because you expected something like Myst, Riven or Obduction: Don't give up, this was not made by the same people.
