I fix the tracking issue ! My Rift S work only with  USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-A port. I've Msi B450 Pro Carbon Ac motherboard and I tried all my Usb, all procedure etc. etc. but it worked for a few minute and then it stopped tracking. The solution for me was USB 3.1 GEN2. Yesterday I played DCS World for 2H and Assetto Corsa Competizione 1H Without problem !
    I hope it can help.
    For me it's the opposite...
I lost the tracking when i plug the Rift S on USB3.1 Gen2.
When i plug it on USB3.1 Gen1, tracking works well.

    I have Asus Prime X470-PRO

Mine lost tracking when going from USB3.1 Gen2 Type-A to a USB3.0 PCIe Card but I did wonder if it just needed to go through Setup or a REBOOT again.
If anyone needs to try USB2.0 then it's likely your K/b&Mouse both are those so swap them for RIFT S.

I've swapped it from every USB port on my PC and the controllers stay stuck no matter what. These things may temporarily work for some people but I feel like until a solid firmware update comes out it going to persist. What's frustrating is I haven't been able to get my controllers to move at all since they got initially stuck the first time. Most people are able to get it to work with some sort of work around but I cant get the slightest result.

I'll also say my rift s worked for about 5 days of heavy use before my movement got stuck. I dont think the USB hub is the issue. It's a slight fix but in my opinion it wouldn't work for days on a USB and then randomly stop because it wasnt the right port.

Surely remove/add batteries and then press Oculus Buttons on both.

Lol I assure that's one of the first things I tried. As I've said I've gone through this entire thread and others and tried every fix.

Seeing as this is a common occurence and lots of ppl have been having problems I'm interested in what is causing it I have sent my logs to oculus and have only had the reply of everything looks normal sir. Please give us indefinite amount of time to look into this xD. I have had 2 different units on my pc have tried also every fix possible I'll be getting a third unit in on the 12th so I'm wondering if it will get fixed soon

I'm basically stuck trying to replace my unit or get a refund and get a new one, or try an all new headset. But I love the price of the rift s and when it was working it was fantastic.  But as of now it will not track my hands at all. I will also be sending in my logs today and spending hours seeing if i can make a miracle happen. I just wish we would be told if it was hardware or software issue at this point. Like enough people are having the problem that they should have some info rather than, have you tried unplugging your cables and getting new batteries?

This whole situation is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. I went to Best Buy and got a brand new rift s sent to me after returning the old one. And it worked! For the first 3 hours... then tracking was lost. No big right? I’ll just restart oculus... freak thing it happens. I restarted oculus 3 times now... not even 5 minutes in each time I’ve lost tracking. Wtf?

Oh and btw oculus has now decided to contact me about my old headset. A week after I set the ticket... it’s gone bud. Yknow what they asked? Is my room well lit? Yes it very much is and I don’t think that would be the issue after 3 hours of gameplay...

Most likely refunding this one for good. Good job Oculus... way to crush expectations and your business.

The Product at this time is deemed as "defective" so you, I, and others should NOT have any problem with a Refund if the time comes.

For a for anyone who is really determined. And have budget brand(1050 ti) like me, I would recommend getting the original rift on eBay. There are plenty used in great condition, and new for $400 or cheaper. I know I most likely can handle vive. But I might also wait for the index to come out.

    DONT BUY A RIFT S!

    That is all.

What really upsets me about all this is there is so much wrong with the rift s. But all you can find online and on YouTube are reviews saying it's the best headset to have right now. I think oculus has dropped the ball because they need to put out an official announcement that these headsets are defective instead of trying to fix it all in secrecy.  They are being so shady that I'm most likely going to return mine and pay twice the price for the Valve index. At least they have a customer service line you can call and have a lasting reputation with gamers. Feels like Oculus doesnt care at all.

This... This right here. I thought I was nuts, couldn’t find one crappy review about the rift s on YouTube.

Its overall very deceiving and unprofessional.

    thank you.

I did hours of research before my first buy and there is nothing at all anywhere stating that the oculus has problems. I agree it is very deceptive. I'm glad I'm not the only one who is noticing this.

Ok now received my third unit and so far so good actually I have been able to play for 3 hours just one tracking issue but was fixed with restart of the app which had never worked before.
Will need more testing for longer time but looks promising as the other 2 were not working from the very start.

Not trying to discourage you but my second one worked for around 20+ hours of play time before I had any issue at all. Now I cant use it at all so just try to keep your expectations low. Until they do an insane amount of patching or a complete recall I firmly believe this product wont fiction properly.

    Hi,
I did some check on USB drivers and see what i found :
When rift S plugged on USB3.1Gen1 (which tracking works well) :

Now Rift S plugged on USB3.1Gen2 (which cause to loose tracking) :

So i tried to update manually the driver, on both "Generic USB" :
Generic USB Hub switched well to Rift S USB Hub.
But the Generic SuperSpeed USB Hub generate error : "this device does not work properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device (code 31)."

May be the key is here...

You are trying to run a Driver on a HUB that is not compatible. I don't see why that is it. In Oculus Devices it shows a RED DOT on HMD and clicking on it says DP not connected. It is very likely interference on the cable from the Audio Limiting constantly rather than just any Peaks, so is over processing and builds up a negative flow for data.

Out of curiosity, how many of you have the Windows 10 May update 1903? Apparently my PC isn't ready for the update. I wonder if that is a part of the problem.

    ASUS PRIME Z370-A motherboard here.

Headset and tracking works fine when plugged into the usb 3.0 controlled by the intel chipset

However when plugged into USB 3.1 controlled by an ASMedia ASM3142 chip, the headset is completely unresponsive. (either stuck on the 3 dots loading or unresponsive tracking and passthrough camera issue like the OP)

The controller has the latest version i could find, however the same problem happens with any Driver, even the Microsoft provided one.

I dread to think someone buying a Rift for a laptop or Pc with only the very common Asmedia usb controllers, the Rift S would be unusable on their system.

Win1809 and I stopped Major updates to 1903 for now by Channel Selection but got an Update yesterday. I also switched USB3.1(2) port to USB C, I got no colour in Elite except menus so did a Repair and reverted the USB again (which when in USB3 Card lost tracking). Now I have lost all tracking of Touch and Head tracking gets lost also. Right now it can't be used and is looking to be a Refund if the spare cable does not fix it.

Is there any update on this.  I see this issue started since it was released but I only just now in the past week started having this issue?  Is it worth my time to just get it replaced?

I highly recommend just replacing it. You'll spend weeks messaging oculus support and ultimately that's what they will have you do and itll take even longer through them. They have knowledge of the issue so I'm sure they are just trying to fix it as fast as they can behind closed doors, that way they dont make themselves look bad.

It might be that most USB related issues are buried to windows 10 code. Since I updated to windows 10 I am still waiting the day when same devices behave as well as they did on windows 7 (on same hardware). Won't go to details, but there are certain USB-related issues which windows 10 brought with it and those are clearly results of bad coding. Personally I believe that the team which rewrote the power saving functionality clearly made some errors during the process.

Windows 10 came as a forced update to be "Green" by using less power. Although it doesn't work well.

So after having issues like the OP for my first two oculus rift S's. I was getting worried that it might be my PC at fault. However now on the third unit and strangely enough it works perfectly without making any changes. Have been using it now for 16 hours over 4 days. Maybe an issue might occur later but seeing as the other 2 were unplayable for longer than 10-50 mins it's weird. Only thing that was noticable different between all 3 was the manufacturing date third one being manufactured in may other in april

Had the S for a few weeks, all well. Last night lost tracking and passthrough snowy, cant see room. It happened after I had loaded Landfall and was trying to use the X-Box 1 controller (which works fine on the rift). Anyway could not get the controller to work, but then ran into this tracking prob. Not sure if related but for sure happened at same time. Another observation - run a 1080 and have a temp gauge. Often get messg "temp exceeds 82 and might shorten card life". Have not paid too much attention to this but suppose I should look into it.
Anyway this morning tried it and all's fine again, tracking and passthrough all good.

Yep... it is important to sometimes check how much dust has piled to your fans inside the computer. Also softwares like msi afterburner can be used to build custom cooling profiles for gpu, which in many cases can help lowering the temperatures. If modern gpu exceeds certain temperature, it usually throttles down to protect the hardware. This may cause all kind of performance issues.

Finally seem to have sorted my issue out.

before my rift would lose touch tracking and the pass trough cameras would stop working within minutes of using the HMD. I've played skyrim vr and tabletop simulator for a little over an hour without any issues so far. don't take it as gospel, but if my issue returns i'll update my post.

my Rift is plugged into my Asmedia USB 3.1 gen 2 port and even after all this still shows up as "Generic superspeed USB Hub" in device manager instead of Rift S Usb hub.
    Here's what I did.

    • Turned off USB powersaving and made sure the computer couldn't put any of my usb ports asleep to save power
    • Uninstalled Oculus Tray Tool
    • Rebooted and Restarted both my computer and the Oculus software
    • Removed my Asmedia USB Drivers
    • Tried Microsoft drivers for Asmedia
    • Updated my Asmedia USB Drivers to the latest version (1.16.56.1)
    • Unplugged the Rift S numerous times
    • Tried my Intel 3.0 ports, which now also started giving me similar issues.
    • Enabled Oculus Beta
    • Disabled Oculus Beta
    • Uninstalled and Reinstalled the Oculus software, which then also reinstalled the Firmware on the Rift S - This finally seems to have fixed my issue, fingers crossed.
Edit: It's back after 1 day.

Fingers crossed it works your headset it might be due to the new update that tracking is getting fixed.

I had the tracking and snow/static in see through mode after 20 minutes or less problem since startup late last month. I went through a support ticket.  Took quite a long time, but eventually they sent me out a replacement 5 meter cable.  Since replacing the cable, I've been able to stay in games as long as I want without experiencing this issue anymore.  Its been about a week now, and I am optimistic.
