I've FINALLY Found A Great Flat/VR Game Analogy!!!

Anonymous
Not applicable
I'm surprised that it's taken me so long. Previously I've compared it to riding a rusty old pushbike compared to driving a supercar and other ones that didn't quite get the point across. But I was always missing the best analogy that fit properly. Well, finally I've found it and it was so bloody obvious that I'm surprised that it's taken me (or anyone else for that matter) so long to come up with. So here it is:

Playing a game on a flat screen is like watching a holiday programme on the telly on holiday destinations like Barbados. Playing a game in VR is like packing a suitcase, hopping on a plane and going on holiday to Barbados.

Why the FUCK hasn't ANYONE else come up with this? 😮

The general theme to this analogy has been used a ton. You are basically saying that... playing a game in VR is like being immersed in Barbados.

You drunk, bro?

I have said a similar thing as well...... playing ED on a screen is like playing a game where you fly a space ship

playing ED in VR (with hotas and voice attack) is like sitting in a space ship and flying around the galaxy.... After sitting in my ship no way am i interested in just seeing a 2D representation of it on a screen,...... even if it is a big 70 inch screen.

all i am lacking now is a motion sim pit.

given your past posts on the subject however snowdog i am surprised you used a holiday destination and watching a program on tv...... i would have thought you would have used being on the set of a porn movie vs watching it on the telly to get your point across 😉
Fiat Coupe, gone. 350Z gone. Dirty nappies, no sleep & practical transport incoming. Thank goodness for VR 🙂

Maybe it overstates the difference. VR doesn't provide human eye resolution and visual fidelity. You can't feel the sand under your feet or the waves washing over your body. It gives people false expectations.

I say it's the difference between playing a game and being inside a game.

Unfortunately, we're nowhere near Total Recall Ego Trip vacations yet

Persoanally, I can't wait for the "Black Mirror - Striking Vipers" version of VR to come out!  B)

I don't think anyone said "Barbados" specifically. But everything else has been said. A lot. lol

I've said that it's like playing something like Elite Dangerous on a screen and actually flying a spaceship but that's something that only gamers will appreciate.

My example above will allow non gamers to understand things.

Have you said it to a non-gamer yet? I have tried that with my non-gaming friends. And they laughed at the idea, since there is a big difference between physically being in the water or the air compared to experiencing it with a VR Headset. MowTin above touched on this point.

"Maybe it overstates the difference. VR doesn't provide human eye

or the waves washing over your body. It gives people false
expectations.

MowTin is correct here. A non-gamer won't buy in to your analogy, because it does create a false expecation. Especially if they have actually been to Barbados in real life. lol
