maybe they need to shell out some moolah to support vr even for a few stages so they wet the appetite of the general audience.

Yup, I saw this a while back. This is why it's so important that Oculus have been funding developers with over half a billion dollars so far to bring AAA quality games to VR.

And also why I'm SO pissed off with Valve for these past few years. With Sony funding big name titles such as Resident Evil and Skyrim and even HTC funding a big name title like Fallout 4 VR I'm SERIOUSLY pissed off with Valve being as tight as a gnat's chuff. Not surprised though unfortunately.

I mean HTC are as skint as fuck and even THEY'VE part-funded a AAA game for VR.

Valve are a complete bunch of see you next Tuesdays as far as I'm concerned, and they were one of my favourite developers years and years ago too.

Just watched the video and it was a different one that I watched a while back, similar title though I think.

I don't think it's hardware changing that's holding AAA publishers back, it's more the expense and there not being enough headset owners out there. This is why the second phase of VR adoption is so important. And for that phase to start we need Microsoft to bring VR goodness to the NextBox.

It's A LOT cheaper to develop for multiple platforms at the same time than it is to develop a single SKU. For big name games like GTA, Assassin's Creed, Red Dead Redemption and the like to get VR versions alongside flat versions publishers need Microsoft on board to bring those headset numbers up.

There are plenty of games that have brought in over a million dollars in sales but when your budget for those AAA game franchises I've listed above are from $50m to $100m+ in some cases they need more headset owners out there to make it worth their while.

Yeah, @snowdog - was kinda surprised with your first post claiming to have seen the video before "a while back" when it was brand new to me. But as you now say it may be "similar" in the sentiment to others you had watched.

Regarding your comment - yes, the need for AAA content and investment from the leaders is essential to the establishment. It about the experience not the tech in this game. I am not as hard as some on Valve - they can do what they want, they owe no one a living, and I think GabeN has done his fair share for the VR community - even if some resent him for that.

He's done a great deal in terms of HARDWARE, but as far as software goes they've pretty much done fuck all. The Lab was good, but it was only a collection of tech demos at the end of the day.

Not having Half Life 2 VR available to play on day one of the Rift and Vive launching or even SINCE then has been unforgivable for me personally.

Just think of the extra hype and headset sales would have been if Half Life 2 VR was available 3 and a half years ago.

You'd probably have an extra couple of hundred thousand headsets bought by mainstream gamers, even at 800 quid a pop for a headset.

And once those mainstream gamers had jumped on the Half Life 2 VR hype train they would have brought some of their friends in too.

And it wouldn't have taken much time, effort and money for Valve to do it either. Most of the work was already there before they removed it all via an update years ago. They probably could have done it all in a matter of months and sold the thing for $30/£30 without too many complaints.

It's just pure laziness from Valve as far as I'm concerned, the same reason why they stopped curating their Store 7 years ago.
