Oculus social features now require a linked Facebook account

Apparently, starting today, Oculus social features (friends list, parties, visiting people's Oculus Homes) will now require a linked Facebook account. This was already the case for some apps like Venues, and some features, like accessing your phone's camera roll in the Quest gallery. Going forward, new social features will demand a Facebook account, and now existing features will too.

Starting today, when you choose to log into
Facebook from the Oculus Platform, you’ll be able to access new social
features that make it easier for you to connect with other people,
including:

  • Chats, so you can message your Oculus friends in or out of the headset with quick responses to hop into games together
  • Join your friends
in VR directly from any device with links that open to where your
friends are within an app, and see the most popular destinations where
    people are playing in VR
  • User-created Events, so you can organize meetups or multiplayer games with friends
  • Share photos, videos, and livestreaming to Facebook, allowing you to share your favorite moments to Facebook Groups from VR
  • Parties that any of your Oculus friends can join (previously parties were only invite-only)
  • Messenger friends can easily join you in VR when you send them links to join you where you’re playing

As
these changes roll out and we make it easier for people to connect and
build communities in VR, we’ll ask people to log into Facebook from the
Oculus Platform to use both the new social features above, as well as
existing social features like joining parties, adding friends, and
visiting other people’s Homes. These features are already powered by
Facebook, since Oculus is part of the Facebook family of apps. And now
first-party social interactions on the Oculus Platform will be backed by
Facebook identity, allowing us to help keep people safer in VR as we
grow the social VR ecosystem.

Personally, I'm not excited to see this, but I guess it's not surprising. I've never had a FB account, and haven't been interested in creating one, but we'll see how it goes--the obvious answer is to create one just for Oculus-related activity and not populate it with a lot of personally identifying information.

Well, at least it's not affecting anything I currently use.
Yet.

I have an extensive Oculus friends list, and I've used Oculus parties to connect with people for MP games, so in the end I'll probably cave and create a FB account. I'm not thrilled about it, but I guess it's not that big a deal.

DK2, CV1, Go, Quest, Quest 2, Quest 3.

I've never used parties and my friends list is 3 people, two of which are coworkers who bought a Go for a class but never use it and one is so I can get depressed about how bad I am at Audica.

It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside, knowing that Facebook cares so much about me and my safety. Thank you Facebook.

Seriously though, I felt so much safer BEFORE all the personal data gathering, tracking and sharing started. I've always loved the anonymity of the internet, and cannot foresee a time when I will plaster my life all over Facebook's blank pages.

Long live the "username" and "password"!

Dear Oculus, If it ain't broke, don't fix it, please.

I'll be your friend Kojack...except I never use the Oculus friends list. I think I visited a few peoples homes at one point but that was it. Unless you're a multiplayer gamer or love social activities then it's not something you notice when in VR especially if notifications are disabled.

Facebook is going to start targeting ads based on your Oculus activity if you attach a Facebook account.

That's going to create a bit of a problem for me for my Rift, since I do not link my Oculus Account with my Facebook account on PCVR. I do, however, have it linked on my GO and Quest (under a separate username). I'll need to consider wtf to do for PCVR lol

Although it doesn't surprise me, since Oculus is just a brand at this point and the technology itself is really... Facebook.

With that in mind, the title of this thread would read,
FacebookVR social features now require a linked Facebook account

I purposely shut down my Facebook account due to harassing members of a family split down the middle. My family is a nightmare, constantly at odds with one another. I wanted nothing to do with it, so I shut it down, as even if I blocked them, they still found a way to send bitching messages. Even creating a new account...they still found me. So now, I can't even use Oculus Venues to watch a concert, even though it's not actually being broadcasted through Facebook itself.

I'm very upset with this. I'm already created another post. Its garbage that Facebook is making you create an account. I know I'm one person out of millions using this, and they wont care either way. But you know what, it really makes me want to get rid of it and leave.

Cant we just have a small piece of our lives where we can be in another world and not be connected to instaface, and all the other things that pulkl our attention. Anyways, enough soapbox.
