Cloud computing may be why oculus is taking time to create next gen headsets

Cloud computing is being worked on presently that will allow the power of powerful CPUs to come from the cloud rather than hardware. It would allow headsets to be smaller and lighter especially standalone not needing hardware built in the headset. Powerful pc vr gaming would be much cheaper for the masses. I'm not saying it's not possible to see an oculus upgrade in the meantime but I think they are buying time waiting for the completed development of cloud tech that will change everything and is in the works now.

No. They are waiting on Eyetracking with Foveated Rendering to be ready which is proving a lot harder and taking a lot longer than expected. Cloud computing is barely good enough for Pancake gaming as Googles Stadia and its best case scenario of 160ms of latency attests. Thats with Googles expertise and resources with servers closer to the end user than most companies would be capable of. VR is magnitudes more latency sensitive than pancake gaming. You would literally need VR Cloud gaming servers at the base of every 5G cell-tower to get the latency down enough for VR. In short. The speed of light is not fast enough for VR Cloud gaming.

Say goodbye to game modding if they ever manage to get that working and move to the cloud.
No more custom songs in Beat Saber. No third party tools. Probably no "unknown sources" either.

I think you may be mistaking R&D focus for actual production plans. The recent departures from OculusVR saw some of the Half Dome2 team leave, and funny enough go to Apple. At the same time Facebook seems focused on their AR headset announcement for later in the year. I wonder if we may not see a similar MR proposal, marrying to two techs, and offering support of streaming VR - though remembering Facebook / OculusVR have declined to be involved with the 5G initiaive.
