Troubleshooting new Rift S

Hello there,

I bought a Rift S three weeks ago. Since it had the "Oculus
Software restart required" infinite loop issue, I refunded it and boght a
new one. The new device did not show this problem, but two other major issues:

1. When I open Oculus Dash and klick "Virtual Desktop" in
the Dash panel, I can see... my desktop. But as soon as I move my head I see
black flickering for parts of the window. The flickering
gets stronger if I move my head faster. The flickering appears only inside the
Virtual Desktop window. I did not observe it in
other applications or Oculus Home so far. This happens independent of SteamVR running or not.

2.The Oculus Guardian is not found or completely shifted each time
I use the Rift S after a PC restart. So I have to setup the Guardian every time
I want to play which is very frustrating. The former (refunded) device did not
have this problem. Is this a software or hardware problem?

Here are my setup specs:

- CPU: Intel Core i5-8600K (6 cores, no overclocking)

- GPU: NVidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB (no overclocking)

- Mainboard: ASrock Z370M Pro4

- Memory: 16 GB

- OS: Windows 10 64bit

- The Rift S is directly plugged into the graphiccard/mainboard with the
original cable, no other cable/hardware involved

Windows
is up-to-date, and I recently updated BIOS and chipset drivers as well as
NVidia drivers. The Oculus software is the latest version and the Rift S runs
with firmware 2.2.0. I already did a clean reinstall of the Oculus software
(with removing all Oculus directories in AppData).
Do you have any suggestions what I could try to fix this?

Hey @cifa85, I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing issues with the virtual desktop in Dash. If it's only happening in the virtual desktop then this is likely software issue. If you haven't already, I would perform a clean installation of your Nvidia drivers. I would also try enrolling in the Public Test Channel(or try opting out if you're already enrolled) to see if there is any change. I would also try testing your Rift S on different USB 3.0 ports as well. Please feel free to contact support here if you need more help. Thanks! -Rick

I tried your suggestions, but they did not help.

Regarding issue 1:
I investigated the issue more and found combinations of the graphics settings where the flickering did not occur:

* VR-Levels disabled (in the Dash menu) + Priorize Performance (in Oculus Software) -> Flickering appears
* VR-Levels disabled (in the Dash menu) + Priorize Quality (in Oculus Software) -> No flickering
* VR-Levels enabled (in the Dash menu) + Priorize Performance (in Oculus Software) -> No flickering
* VR-Levels enabled (in the Dash menu) + Priorize Quality (in Oculus Software) -> No flickering

Regarding issue 2:
I can reproduce the lost Guardian setup with the folling steps:

1. Put on headset.
2. Headset says: "No play area found. Please set up Guardian."
3. Follow the Guardian setup.
4. Go to Virtual Desktop on the Oculus Dash panel.
5. Reboot PC while keeping headset on.
6. Wait 10 seconds until headset turns on again.
7. Headset says: "No play area found. Please set up Guardian."
8. Repeat.

Regarding issue 2, I have that too, but thats not how I use the RiftS (an I don't think you should either)

Keep the USB unplugged until your computer starts up. Then when you want to play VR - plug in the USB (keep DP in all the time - never unplug it).

Wait for PC to recognise you have plugged in the USB - then put on headset.

WAIT
for oculus to load up (yes that means waiting with the headset on with black screens) be patient it could take up to a minute !
Once it loads up, you should be good to go.  When you have finished playing unplug the USB close oculus software down, repeat these steps when you want to play agin.  It helps if you have USB3 on the front of your PC.

Mine loses guardian sometimes, but thats to do with changing light intensities than anything else.

Hi,

I'm also having Oculus Rift S play area and guardian zone reseted every time I put on my oculus Rift S. It's hapening in every system boot.

Light intensity and hardware, furniture and everything is always the same, I'm in a indoor room with no exterior lighting. This began happening a month or two ago, didn't happen anytime before since I bought it in august 2019.  It's quite upseting.

I don't use guardian nor need play area because I only play flight simulation games, so I just center the view once inside the aircraft. I wish I could disable or fix this issue.
