Half Life: Alyx

Protocol7
Heroic Explorer

I am really looking forward to this. Sure it isn't Half Life 3 but it's something huge for VR.

Amazed by how many people on an Oculus forum talking about index headset?? Anyway, I have a Quest with Link and have not started playing the game yet since I am not completely done with Asguard's Wrath. I have been using the Oculus Debug tool with Asguard's to bump up the visuals in terms of a crisper image.

Does anybody know if this debug tool will also work with games from SteamVR? And if so, what settings are you using? I have loaded the game and it is ready to go.

Thanks.

I can't believe so many people talking about the Valve Store on an Oculus Forum 😉

Steam has its own version, check the VR settings of the game and you can increase the SS.

Aren't you spoiling your own experience watching all these playthroughs?

My VR backlog is so large, by the time I get around to playing HL-A I will have forgotten all the spoilers lol

My backlog is huge as well, but Alyx skipped the line. Of course.

And I thank you for having it skip the line, as I love living vicariously through you while I watch my VR Backlog get nice and phat

You shoulda seen how many people were here in 2016-2017 talking about the Vive. Rift owners had to create a Rift Megathread just to try to have a peaceful conversation lol. The forum was like 80% Vive, 20% Rift. Now the forum is 90% Oculus HMD's, 10% Competitor HMD's. And it's mostly healthy conversations these days. Which is awesome!

I'm not too surprised about Steam discussions in this thread... or Index discussions in any thread really, Rifts and Vives (and now Index's) were/are the only 2 headsets that could really be described as mainstream consumer PCVR competitors, others are more specialist to varying degrees. Quests with Link have joined that discussion too!

Plus this forum is a way more worthy place to discuss the main VR options than any other forum
...in my completely unbiased opinion.

The locomotion doesn't bother me but I wouldn't call it great either. I'm using the one that goes toward where you look. I remember Gabe said that Alyx was finished last year and was just waiting to be released so I'm guessing that may be why it's like the earlier VR games and not the recent ones. Perhaps the upcoming titles they're still working on will implement the newer systems.

I'm using smooth turning set to 50, works quite well. Still would love for valve to dissociate locomotion and weapon hand. I do get that VR motion sickness is a real - and a massive - issue for many persons, but would like more options, also for jumping, sprinting - and maybe more climbing (but I'm only in chapter 3).
Until I get locomotion and weapon hand on my left controller, Alyx only gets a 97% rating from me  😄

You know you can rebind the controls in SteamVR, right? It shouldn’t be too hard to swap the sticks, if nobody has uploaded a left-handed left-locomotion scheme yet.

I personally haven’t had a problem using right-hand locomotion and left-hand shooting, but I’ve been playing other games recently that do the same controls flip for left-handed mode, so maybe I’m just used to it. Right-hand locomotion is closer to my usual kb+m setup, anyway. I’ve never played much on a gamepad, so I don’t have years of muscle-memory to overcome for thumbstick locomotion.

Did read that some tried to rebind controls, not sure they succeeded, I've just gotten used to shooting with my right hand - same as in Doom VFR, lol. I guess that automatically changes normal difficulty into hard and lets me enjoy the game a bit longer  o:)

The left-handed discussion is also ongoing here:

Nice video, basically he says after testing different gpus and hmds that you just need a GTX 1070 to get the best of Alyx and that the Index controllers are lightyears ahead of the competition, but he prefers the wireless Vive Pro hmd:

https://youtu.be/UTwgInKmEHI

Fun thing that he doesn't get that the fidelity settings are threshold markers, and the game will constantly adapt to your rig. Choosing Ultra Fidelity means that you now restrict the game from reducing details, but if your rig is fast the Low Fidelity will automatically be upscaled to Ultra. That's why he can't see any difference when comparing Low and Ultra using the 2070 Super. He doesn't seem to notice that the higher the fidelity the lower the super sampling - that's why I recommend Low Fidelity, it'll secure the best image quality you can get (even if you have a 2080 Ti the game will automatically adjust to higher detail levels also including like 150+ % res). Also 144 Hz/fps aren't just about getting no frame drops, it is just as much about getting (very) reduced levels of super sampling. I'd greatly prefer super sharp 90 fps in Alyx instead of slightly blurry 144 fps, but not all seem to notice drops in super sampling (the lucky ones, lol). 2c.

So I tried it with Quest+Link today. Didn’t see anything that really looked better than CV1, and noticed some colour-banding in the dark areas (I’m in the tunnels, so there’s lots of dark areas). Switched back to CV1, and will stick with my Rift for this game.

DK2, CV1, Go, Quest, Quest 2, Quest 3.

I tried it on the Rift S today, much better than the Quest with link, the better display of the Rift S over the Quest really shows with this games,
