Half Life: Alyx

Heroic Explorer

I am really looking forward to this. Sure it isn't Half Life 3 but it's something huge for VR.

So I tried it with Quest+Link today. Didn’t see anything that really looked better than CV1, and noticed some colour-banding in the dark areas (I’m in the tunnels, so there’s lots of dark areas). Switched back to CV1, and will stick with my Rift for this game.

I tried it on the Rift S today, much better than the Quest with link, the better display of the Rift S over the Quest really shows with this games,

Makes sense, because like Boneworks, Alyx was thoroughly designed for lcd hmds - although there are several dark locations where oled may have an edge.

Amazed by how many people on an Oculus forum talking about index headset?? Anyway, I have a Quest with Link and have not started playing the game yet since I am not completely done with Asguard's Wrath. I have been using the Oculus Debug tool with Asguard's to bump up the visuals in terms of a crisper image.

Does anybody know if this debug tool will also work with games from SteamVR? And if so, what settings are you using? I have loaded the game and it is ready to go.

Thanks.

Yes, Oculus tray tool settings work in Steam VR.

I have a bit of arachnophobia. Those black hairy head crabs are really freaking me out.

There is this scene with lots of those dark head crabs below and you have to cross some planks. I really had to take a moment and talk myself into moving forward. The fear was real.

Anyway, I'm loving this. Love that electric dog or whatever they call it. Visually spectacular. This is all fantastic sci-fi horror visualized.

The game has its negatives in terms of lack of melee, terrible inventory system, and some locomotion issues but the positives totally overwhelm the negatives. Again, this is a fantastic dystopian sci-fi horror game.

It's more my experience that OTT works in Steam games and apps that support native Oculus drivers, but not if native drivers are not supported. I read that some dude couldn't get OTT to work in Alyx, which makes sense in that perspective.

Just finished Chapter 4 and 5.

I had to chuckle at the situation because I was hauling around a crate of like 20 grenades in a crate in chapter 4 somewhere and chucking them out bomberman style. Combine? Grenade for you. Zombies? Grenade for you. Headcrab? Yep grenades. On another note, the spores in chapter 5 look incredible. Hell everything does in the hotel. So did the lightning from the lightning dogs tbh lol.

I saw someone doing this on reddit, but several said it made the game crash a lot. Cute idea though 🙂

Interesting. Mine never crashed but all the grenades eventually vanished but I was only down to like 6 left lol.

I had a feeling those would affect people.
They've really turned an action shooter series with a little bit of scares into survival horror.

I've got mixed feelings on that. On the one hand, that seems to be limiting the audience. I can imagine a lot of newcomers to VR not being able to get past some of the headcrab / zombie scenes (and definitely not something later).
But on the other hand, horror is probably the most intense and immersive VR experience. If you want to make people truly experience how much better VR is than flat gaming, scare the shit out of them.

So far only one bit has startled me enough to make me spin around and fire instinctively, but it turned out:
it was Russell's drone back alive and it came in the room behind me and made a noise. Got a good hit on it too.

At the moment I've switched from CV1 to Rift-S. But that's purely for the improved visuals, I wanted to see the environment (and distant enemies) better. However too much of the game has very dark areas which look grey on the Rift-S. Plus the Touch controllers with top rings keep hitting my headset when I climb a ladder. I still haven't tried my Quest, I just can't imagine wearing something that uncomfortable for long sessions.

I'm not too surprised about Steam discussions in this thread... or Index discussions in any thread really, Rifts and Vives (and now Index's) were/are the only 2 headsets that could really be described as mainstream consumer PCVR competitors, others are more specialist to varying degrees. Quests with Link have joined that discussion too!

Plus this forum is a way more worthy place to discuss the main VR options than any other forum
...in my completely unbiased opinion.

Indeed and we are a much friendly forum then we were a year ago, much more cosmopolitan now.

VR brothers .... Unite.

Played some more last night, the game is really brilliant, so realistic. Hope they continue to smooth out the free location but I am getting used to it.

I've bounced back between CV1 and Odyssey+ several times for similar reasons. The increased detail is mind blowing on the Odyssey...just absolutely real looking. While CV1 blacks are good the Odyssey blacks make it horrifyingly dark in some areas. My nerves were getting shot a couple of times and I retreated back to the CV1. 😄 CV1 also has the finger tracking which is nice when pushing buttons and such. I'm about 70% odyssey 30% CV1 so far and up to 8 hours played.

As far as the quest, I mentioned earlier in this threat that I found the Quest to look the worst of all 3 headsets I have. Couldn't do a lot to counter the compression. Add on the bad comfort and terrible audio...and yea. It still looked good but I found even CV1 to look better with some supersampling...at least with my PC.
