Mental Health & Facebook

I deactivated my Facebook account 2 years ago for mental health reasons. I found it was a huge positive for me and I have no desire to ever use Facebook again.
So for someone like me who finds it detrimental what am I supposed to do now that it is a requirement?

I have been an Oculus user/developer/supporter since the the Kickstarter, my game Lunar Flight helped legitimize the revival of VR by showing a complete game that defined best practices by design during the Oculus Share days.

The Facebook account requirement to use certain features that never used to be required has pushed me out of the eco system. I can't visit friends Homes anymore, I can't chat with them or join their games through the platform.

I considered making a throw away account but then realized that as soon as I associate my Oculus account with it, Facebook will know who I am. In fact I can't even make a fake account because you are required to use your real name. My account was deactivated, its most likely Facebook will attempt to reactivate it once it realizes who I am which I don't want to do.

I realize that this will fall on deaf ears but someone at Oculus/Facebook needs to hear it whether they care or not.

I've started getting friend requests via Oculus once again which I've always been happy with as social VR is something I'm keen to try out... as it seems everyone who's complaining about the Facebook connection wants to do.

I'd love to see some kind of study; that tries to correlate COVID-19 rates with people's privacy preferences or social media usage.  The thesis would be those who are most likely to be infected, are prolific social media users, or not privacy paranoid.

Neither do I and it will stay that way LOL.
If I want to see how Family and friends are getting on I just call them.
My Mum is on it and it's just filled with pics about what her pet dogs are doing. From sleeping on a new cover to eating a bone 😄
I suppose some people like all that stuff but it's not for me. When I visit friends I like to ask them about their holiday to start a conversation. That becomes a bit pointless if they have already told everyone on their Facebook about it.

In my social circle I can say undoubtedly I'm the most pro lockdown regarding coronavirus, possibly contributed to because I'm a part-time carer for my mum who's very vulnerable but I'm sure I would have been that way regardless. Like many people, I see socialising in the real world during a pandemic that currently has no vaccine as extremely problematic.

On the other hand I seem to be much less paranoid about online privacy than some. I'm a bit of a control freak and controlling social activity and privacy on-line is easy for me. I understand not everyone finds it easy but I do, much more so than real life.

By the way, I may need to give myself a warning! no politics or non-relevant general social discussions are allowed on the forum. I think this is maybe relevant but getting close to politics. Just thought I'd better mention that before someone takes it as a green flag to go off on a political campaign.

Maybe best to avoid the Covid thing in the public space and just discuss the differences between VR/on-line socialising and real-life just in case 🙂

That's interesting.  I'm guessing based on your use of "mum" and spelling of "socialising," that you are British?  If you were born after 1960, when CCTV was first installed at Trafalgar Square, you may have grown up in an environment where the expectation of privacy was less; compared to the US; where until recent years, the only place we had no privacy expectations was in Las Vegas.

Well my need to control my personal info on-line probably draws the line at age and location... although I've probably stated both here in the past! Anyway, I think the conversation is definitely veering away from the topic of the thread so I'll leave it there.

Well my Mums elderly and she made one. Maybe you can then get to tell everyone what you've been up to today, or be like my Mum and post pics of your pets for everyone to like 😄
I'm sure you will get along just fine without one though 🙂
