Just a few suggestion for experiencing the world at home - do add your own suggestions! Note, I've tried to avoid apps just using 360 degrees shots and movies. Also I've tried to include only apps which impressed me - or apps with very high ratings (either in the Oculus Store or on Steam).

Debuting at SIGGRAPH on Valve’s INDEX headset, Il Divino delivers an experience of the highest fidelity –you can see individual cracks and brush strokes in the plaster! Step onto Michelangelo’s own scaffold and learn about how he painted the ceiling, or enter a Vatican conservator’s mobile aerial platform to see the ceiling up close, and learn about the controversial cleaning. 5. Visit the International Space Station (ISS) and go for a spacewalk:

Info: We’re excited to share that Mission: ISS is available now on the Oculus Store! Created in collaboration with NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency, this true-to-life simulation lets you explore space and experience the sensation of microgravity in VR.

Based on NASA models as well as direct input and feedback from multiple astronauts and the NASA VR Lab in Houston, Mission: ISS recreates the International Space Station in painstaking detail. While many of us dream of becoming astronauts, only about 500 people have ever been to space. Thanks to Mission: ISS and Oculus Touch, you can use your own hands as you dock incoming cargo capsules, conduct spacewalks, and perform mission-critical tasks. Now anyone, anywhere, can experience the breathtaking view of Earth from orbit.

Pompeii is an experience allowing you to visit the most famous ruins of Pompeii, Italy. Feeling like you are really there, you can walk along one of Pompeii's main streets, visit the interior of an extraordinarily well preserved Roman house, experience the hustle and bustle of Pompeii's bars and shops, visit two beautiful Roman gardens, and finally get to experience what is was like bathing in a 2000 year old Roman bathhouse. This experience allows you to enter and explore Pompeii with an unrivaled freedom of movement. You can walk right up beautifully painted walls and mosaics which are cordoned off in real life. The experience contains a large source of highly entertaining narrative content, allowing one to really understand what living here as a Roman must have been like. In our view this is the closest thing you will ever get to feeling like you are in Pompeii without actually having to fly to Italy and be there yourself.

Some art museums and the like (might add more later):

https://www.oculus.com/experiences/rift/2122150644572762/

2. Mona Lisa: Beyond The Glass (Index and HTC Vive only):

Info: Mona Lisa: Beyond the Glass is the first VR experience presented to the public by the Louvre Museum and is conceived as part of the Museum’s seminal Leonardo da Vinci exhibition which commemorates the 500th anniversary of the artist’s death in France. 3. The Kremer Collection:

Info: We are very excited to announce that our biggest project The Kremer Collection Museum is now live. This is a big milestone and the first step in making the museum available to the public!
https://www.oculus.com/experiences/rift/1944128808953270/

4. Art Plunge:

Info: Art Plunge is a gallery where you can get the feeling of being inside famous paintings. This is a short but sweet experience featuring VR interpretations of the following five artworks:

Mona Lisa, Starry Night, The Birth of Venus, The Creation of Adam and Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window.

Please note that movement is restricted in the experience even if you have a large play area.

5. Dream of Dali:

Info: Enjoy the remarkable marriage of art and technology in Dreams of Dali, a virtual reality experience from The Dali Museum (St. Petersburg, FL), as you explore Dali's painting “Archaeological Reminiscence of Millet's ‘Angelus’.” Immerse yourself in the world of the Surrealist master like never before in this encounter, venturing into the towers, peering from them to distant lands and discovering surprises around every corner. We imagine Dali himself, known in his lifetime as what we now call an "earlier adopter" of new technology, would applaud this inspiring homage to his 1935 painting.

You're welcome, as I wrote I have not tried them all, but many have very high ratings on Steam, so I'm looking forward to try some too - especially the Sistine Ceiling and Nefertari looked great and are among the highest rated VR apps on Steam within this genre.

A few shots from Blueplanet VR, which may have some of the best textures comparing the above apps:

It works in solid 90 fps res 200% using the Index and a GTX 1080, maybe res 250% will work just fine using Rift-S and a similar gpu 😉

Seriously, I spent like 30 real minutes searching for that Versailles app - could not remember its name, but remembered it was about 20GB and that I did not want to install it back then due to the massive size. I searched for Paris, Louvre, Museum, Art, but ranking the results based on user ratings just didn't help enough.

Well, I guess we're now all set for the perfect VR vacation - mine starts today - I've got 4 weeks - about 2,500,000 seconds  😄  o:)

The van Gogh cafe may be fun too - tried it years ago:
