More here:

https://www.oculus.com/blog/a-single-way-to-log-into-oculus-and-unlock-social-features/

Today, we’re announcing some important updates to how people log into Oculus devices, while still keeping their VR profile. Starting in October 2020:

  • Everyone using an Oculus device for the first time will need to log in with a Facebook account.

  • If you’re an existing user and already have an Oculus account, you’ll have the option to log in with Facebook and merge your Oculus and Facebook accounts.

  • If you’re an existing user and choose not to merge your accounts, you can continue using your Oculus account for two years.

After January 1, 2023, we will end support for Oculus accounts. If you choose not to merge your accounts at that time, you can continue using your device, but full functionality will require a Facebook account. We will take steps to allow you to keep using content you have purchased, though we expect some games and apps may no longer work. This could be because they include features that require a Facebook account or because a developer has chosen to no longer support the app or game you purchased. All future unreleased Oculus devices will require a Facebook account, even if you already have an Oculus account.

Maybe we could create a thread calling out to him to fill in all the details so we can get the popcorn in

....I mean help him with his problem

Look on the bright side though... having an account means you may be able to refuse lots of invites.

Yes, but lots of invites from people who you don't even know. I find online social interaction awkward now. I liken it to walking up to someone you don't know in the street and trying to engage them in a long conversation. I used to be in online gaming clans years ago, and I'm glad I stayed anonymous because lots of them turned toxic. It's difficult to gauge people in real life, let alone online.

Well I was being a bit fecessious. In reality the only invites you get are from other Oculus users, the same as you do with your Oculus account now, and they would only see your Oculus nickname, same as now (unless you chose to use your real name). You wouldn't get any invites on Facebook unless you choose to allow them from people you don't know, I.e. The friends of friends setting. And presumably if you have that set and don't invite anyone yourself, you then wouldn't even get invites from people you do know!

The only friend invites I get are on here from Oculus users which I'm happy to accept. I don't get them from strangers on Facebook as I've set it not to.

Unless you committed Credit Card Fraud on Tuesday, then no, you wouldn't get banned from Facebook.

In fact, I would say that Facebook probably has more relaxed rules than Steam. For example, I challenge anyone to start a Flat Earth community discussion on Steam. There's plenty on Facebook. Let me know how that works out.
 😉

Try just typing the name "Tommy Robinson" and see how relaxed they are.
That was enough to get me banned twice.
Also I know people getting banned for just liking or being friends with the "wrong" conservative people.
If you're not a blue haired nose ring wielding marxist, or someone without any opionions whatsoever then Facebook is a minefield and you never know when or why.

Unless you share child pornography, then Facebook seem to have your back. ?
So all you consooomers out there planning to line up for a Quest 2, I hope you can live with supporting a company like this that also sells all of your private data. All so you can get some cheap VR.

I sure as hell don't.

Also I opened a ticket about me probably losing all access to games bought through Oculus Store due to being perm banned from Facebook last year, and not allowed to create a new account.

The answer was
"If you are having issues with Facebook account please contact their support page.

Explain to them the whole situation, they probably will give you permission to create Facebook account again by January 2023."

So basically beg and plead to Facebook to please let me back in, and take a chance while crossing my fingers in hope that they feel humble enough.

Which, as mentioned, isn't going to happen from my side.
So I'm done with Facebook/Oculus.
It was fun while it lasted, but I still have enough self esteem to not give in to them.

Also it's worth noting for all fanatical buyers of the Quest 2 that they released the Quest and Rift S just 1,5 years ago before pulling the plug on it now.
How do you know the Quest 2 won't face the same fate in a year? ? With support probably suffering as a result?
Just a thought.

Image removed from above post and I'm wondering if a warning is appropriate.

Before posting opinions on this forum you need to make sure of the origins of the information you're posting. Groups supporting conspiracy theories created a lot of memes near identical to the one posted above, petitions even started based on those memes.

Hate speech and support of hate speech even subtle support wrapped in supposed support of free speech is as unacceptable here as it is on Facebook.

Politics are also not permitted on this forum... whether right, left or centre, period.

If they release Quest 3 in 1.5 years, and it’s a significant upgrade for a low price, then I will probably buy that too. They haven’t “pulled the plug” on the previous Quest, they’ve stopped selling it as the new model replaces it. Quest 1 is still supported and still compatible with all apps on the Quest store. Do you hate Apple for releasing a new iPhone every year?

In some ways, yes 😄 As a MDM provider - it gets stupid how many hoops you have to do sign your soul away with. For every two step forward - they do - do a set backwards in their software platform.

For their hardware - its almost impossible now to even fix your phone, laptop, or other Apple devices as well. Yet, they cost an arm and leg to buy in the first place and their repair services also charge you more for a fix that might not actually be the problem.

A lot of the time its just a bad cap or replacement part that isn't even that hard to replace or should not even cost as much as it does. A little time, a hot gun, and some glue tap is all you need to save yourself 1000s of dollars.

All I can say is - fuck Apple in the aries.

It will be interesting to see how many will experience trouble, hopefully it'll just be a few.

I’m pretty sure I read that Oculus said not to merge your accounts until after 11 October.  I intend to wait until I get my Quest 2 before trying to link my accounts.

Just out of interest what are Facebook Blocking when they ban you ?
Your name, Email, IP address or all ?
In other words ..  is there any reason you could not link your quest to a family members Facebook account ?
