Lists of killer apps and games by user ratings - for the Rift hmds and Quest 1 & 2 with Link

RuneSR2
Grand Champion

To get an overview, here're lists of the highest rated games and apps for the Oculus Rift hmds and for Quest 1 & 2 with (Air)Link. If you're new to PC-VR, maybe these lists can be of inspiration - and maybe even old-timers can find stuff they've overlooked...

To be included at least 40 users must have rated a game or an app, and the average user rating must be at least 4.5 stars out of 5 (= 90 % or better) - based on user ratings in the Oculus Rift Store (Steam games or apps are not included). Maybe we could call these lists for grade "A" games and apps - or simply current Rift killer games and apps  😉

And why the need for 40 user ratings? In the Oculus Rift Store there are many games and apps receiving high ratings, but to provide sound statistics it's not enough with just 3 user ratings - or 10 - or even 20. I've chosen 40 because it's close to the minimum number of individuals I'd want in a group, if I was trying to get some robust statistics after collecting answers to a questionnaire (for a medical trial and similar investigations). I've provided the current number of user ratings for each game or app, so if some readers only trust average ratings based on 100, 500 or even 1,000 user ratings, the lists will accommodate for such preferences.

Note that these lists are not influenced by my preferences - I'm just the guy counting user ratings and associated average ratings  o:)
Also note that new awesome games or apps may not yet be on the lists due to an insufficient number of user ratings.

BTW, to make these lists I selected the Oculus Store category containing all games and apps, organized the items according to user ratings (highest ratings first) and then - one by one - checked the number of ratings and the average score.

Finally we could also check which game or app (with an average user rating of at least 90 %) has the most votes in total - and the winner in each category is:

Rift game with the most ratings

Rift app with the most ratings

Btw, Steam is a different beast compared to the Oculus Store, because you can only vote thumbs up or down, and then the number of thumbs ups are counted. This could mean that any rating above 50% is counted as positive - but will depend on users preferences (maybe some will only count 85% as positive etc.). We do see similar trends comparing highest rated games and apps, but we can't compare directly to the more elaborate ratings in the Oculus Store. I just tried to select Rift games corresponding to what you can find in the Oculus Store - and the top Steam VR results are...

I'd like to add a few titles from my Steam library that didn't make that list. I consider these to be 95% and above (just my rating):
-Alien: Isolation (97%)*
-The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR (96%)
-Moss (96%)
-Obduction (95%)
-The Talos Principle (95%)
-Acron: Attack of the Squirrels (95%)**

*Not natively a VR game, but with the VR mod, I put it up as my third overall VR favorite, right after Lone Echo & Alyx
** Not something I play on my own, but this game alone sells VR headsets like no other. It's a perfect game to keep everyone engaged when you have a group of friends cause everyone plays on their phone while someone is in VR (and then you do turns)

Nice - I have many games I'd like to see on the list, but I don't decide the games on the list, thus it's free from personal preferences. To get on the list (or lists, one for games, one for apps) the only way in is achieving at least 40 ratings and an average rating of 4.5/5 stars or better.
Since Steam only counts positive vs. negative ratings it's hard to compare, so for now the list is restricted to games and apps available in the Oculus Store.
If we should include Steam PCVR, maybe it should only be games with 95% positive ratings, but maybe at least 40 ratings would still be ok for strong enough statistics... Several PCVR titles also struggle to get 40 ratings on Steam.

It does have a 92% rating in the Oculus Store (Rift), but only 33 ratings - let's see how it goes with about 20% more ratings... I had hoped to see Covert Ops make the cut, but I don't think that's gonna happen... It's not easy to get on the lists, and it shouldn't be 😉

The Quest port The Under Presents just got 40 ratings in the Rift section of the Store - and an amazing 94% average rating:

Strange - it says the game is free?! - But seems that's a 30 min demo:

I'm ready to face the fire and the flames  🙂 - For what I'm going to write, had I done so 500 years ago, I might have ended up like this  :#

Why are Beat Saber and Racket: Nx better than Lone Echo and Robo Recall? If someone could explain this to me, I'd greatly appreciate it - I feel a bit lost here  😉

Oh, well, I might just buy the games and try them out...  😉

I too am not really a fan of rhythm games. The huge popularity of the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games just baffled me. That said, I love Beat Saber, and here's why.
1. The music is very good, for the most part. I refuse to even consider some of the music packs. And I'm not generally a fan of electronica. But the music is just plain good.
2. It's exercise that doesn't feel like exercise. You might start a session off making the bare minimum movements. But that changes quickly. First you're just making half motions to keep track of the beat. Then you're bobbing side to side to hit those beats on the outside even though you can reach them just fine without moving. Soon after that you realize you're actually dancing as you play. And it all happens quite naturally. The game just gets you moving.
3. There's a challenge for any skill level. I'm a 'filthy casual' who only plays on Normal. I have a set of 7 or 8 songs I run through each day (usually) as part of my workout routine. I've mastered each of these songs on Normal, but I am using them for a workout. I'm not trying to push my skill to the edge. I'm playing for the workout I get. Usually. But for those who want to push themselves, the option is there. For those who want custom songs, the option is there. For those who just want a chill experience while listening to some really thumpin music, the option is there too.
Lo, a quest! I seek the threads of my future in the seeds of the past.

The free app Breath Tech just got average 92% rating based on 40 ratings:

Another free app in the Rift Store, namely the free Quest port Half + Half also just got a 90% average rating based on 60 ratings:

Interestingly, it seems Rift users like it more than Quest users. At least the average Quest rating is only 76 %, but based on 351 ratings.

Rune isn't the only one, but you have to keep in mind that the only people reviewing them (I assume) are those who bought them. People like me me who would give Beat Saber a 1 star review simply because we dislike the whole concept aren't going to buy it in the first place and thus not review it. So you really can't compare the ratings between Beat Saber and Robo Recall. At best, you could compare Beat Saber to other rhythm games. I assume they exist, though I don't know of any. Similarly, Robo Recall's ratings can only be compared to other FPS's, like Arizona Sunshine.

I just found out there's a free Racket: Nx demo on Steam - it's a 2GB download. I just tried it and must admit I'm impressed. Like you wrote, which I think is spot on, we should be careful not to mix different genres - and both Beat Saber and Racket: Nx (guess both are sports games to some degree) belong to completely different genres than Lone Echo and Robo Recall. Maybe the lists can help to find games and apps that - within their respective genres - will be extremely impressive. Racket: Nx is not just polished - I'd call that game ultra-polished. It plays like some weird cocktail of tennis and Arkanoid, but it's an awesome cocktail and trailers don't show this game correctly (like nearly always for VR games). Racket: Nx is easy to access and understand, it performs awesome (even forcing super-sampling 2.0 I get perfect 90 fps and 30-40% extra headroom) and few if any will experience technical difficulties (like the game crashing) - because to get a 96 % average rating you need all users to be happy 😉 Still, to me it feels more like a $10 game than a $20 game, but of course the devs got to make a living 🙂

https://youtu.be/dKcMVUN4Ric

For persons who like this kind of futuristic tennis, Racket: Nx may indeed be the reference, but it wouldn't qualify as a top 5 Rift game to me, because I value other genres higher.

Note that Racket: Nx wasn't out of Early Access before July 17 2018, so you could say it's a new game, less than 1 month old (at the time I write this post).

Maybe I should try Beat Saber soon like Falken76 suggested - if not for anything else, just to see what a 98% game (based on more than 1,000 ratings) plays like...

Racket: Nx latest patch worked wonders. Performance has gotten like 50% better or so. I can now use super sampling 2.0 with the Rift CV1 in combo with 4xMSAA - and I got solid 90 fps! (and 40% overhead)

New music and sound are awesome too - the deep bass of the CV1 is fully put to use. This is one of my favorite games using the CV1 headphones. Should be close to a crime using piped audio for this game (Quest 2 owners need not to despair - help is here: https://www.logitechg.com/en-us/products/gaming-audio/pro-gaming-headset-oculus.981-001003.html ) .

Thus the best just got even better!  B)

I just completely updated the lists on page 1 of this thread (first post). These games made the list for the first time - I'm really happy to see Merry Snowballs in the top - it's a truly awesome game - it took several years to make the list, so many may not know of this VR gem:

Spice and Wolf
https://youtu.be/IEtbMVmw_qA

I guess there's so much to do this summer  🙂

Ok, I've completed all 3 chapters in Spice and Wolf, and I just don't get what this app is about - and why so many rate it high - and it's expensive too. To me it's a basic animation tech demo - you can't move, you just sit there and listen - like GearVR. The story is quite boring - not much happens, it's a story about fitting together and bonding as a couple - being different but supporting each other.  The animations are nice - but personally this is not worth more than maybe $5 to me. It's too boring even to work as an intro to VR for guests.
After completing the 3 chapters, you get some interaction and can touch "Wolf" - but she's a very young girl (maybe like 10 years old), feels close to some weird kind of pedophilia. In short - I don't really get this rather strange app.

Seems like chapter 2 is getting ready - about a young adult man being together with two naive underage girls...
