The Quest 2? It feels more like a Pro version of the original Quest.

Just like the Playstation 4 Pro wasn't a full successor to the Playstation 4, but an upgraded PS4 with better resolution and a faster processor. That's what this feels like.

Agreed.
To be frank this is more a cost-reduced version with the decision on the Qualcomm problem reversed to adopt the XR processor, rather than the out of date SD835 that was put in the Quest-1. Many devs that saw the Quest-2 proto called this a "Pro" version because of the better performance and formfactor - and that did the rounds of the grapevine before the launch. Many rumored there would be a Version 1 and Version 2 (Lite and Pro) but in the end the Go, Quest and Rift-S were dropped for a double down on just Standalone Quest-2. Least the PC VR side of the Oculus owners group have till September 2021 before their PC platform is discontinued!

I very much doubt Oculus are going to be putting anymore money into PC -VR after we get what is currently in the works. So we have to ask who is going to be making PC -VR games from the ground up and not just using bolt on VR? The big dev houses don't seem interested apart from just adding bolt on VR to Sims, or like EA did for Star Wars Squadrons.

I think we have to get used to seeing a lot of bolt on PC -VR, with just a few gems here and there built for VR once Oculus stops paying devs to produce PC -VR games. At-least Quest 2 owners will be happy with their mobile VR games though. I will be happy with bolt on PC -VR because I suppose it's better then nothing.

I thought it had already been covered here:

https://www.vrfocus.com/2020/09/oculus-rift-s-is-being-discontinued-in-spring-2021/

I stated September, as I am sure that Facebook Connect 2021 will have some announcements about a compromise "Hybrid" solution for Quest Link to try and appease the PC community of their customers, now jumping ship to get HP G2 Valve bundles!

The big dev houses don't seem interested apart from just adding bolt on VR to Sims and one or two of them adding VR to their cockpit games, like EA did for Star Wars Squadrons.

I think the Valve announcement linked to the launch of the HP G2 will keep a light in the window for PC based VR content. But yes, the unfathomable amounts that Facebook has ploughed into VR game development/acquisition will now revert to a more Standalone performance dynamic. The age old statement of "...my Quest version of Boneworks/Half-Life:Alyx/[insert PC VR game], using Link is as good as the Rift-S version!!" will still continue even when the wireless Link system is eventually revealed.

We have seen more and more use of the term "Hybrid" by those in the community that spotted that the PC VR aspect of Oculus was being pivoted towards Standalone - hoping that Link can be used as a compromise to moving away from dedicated PC VR. But with Samsung, Panasonic and even Sony headsets in the works that are true Hybrid VR systems, it will be difficult to keep this subterfuge past Q2 2021.

I seriously believe we will be getting a Quest-3 reveal next-year - attempts to take the wind out of Sony PSVR2's sails will be essential to hope to achieve any of Facebooks goals before full MR.

Facebook will find it hard competing with Sony if they make anything like a good VR headset next time around. The first Sony VR headset wasn't that great, but still sold millions. Can you imagine what Sony will sell if their next VR headset is something close to a HP -G2. One of my predictions is that the next Sony VR headset will crap all over the competition. The reason for that is they will produce great none Mobile VR games, and plenty of people will already own a PlayStation 5 to play Sony's higher quality VR games.

Agreed @RedRizia - some recent departing Oculus/Reality Lab individuals stated that they felt the Quest-2 was accelerated as a cheap standalone (only offering) to place all their emphasis in competing with the PSVR2 - seen by management as the greatest threat with its cross-connection (hybrid) capabilities [rumored].

Yes the PSVR was no great shakes, but the halo strap, great display (from Samsung after Oculus) and a great price point an ongoing library of content sealed the deal, with some 6m being sold - making it the most profligate headset (actually sold!).

All those that have pivoted from consumer PC have done so with the understanding that of what VR consumer sales base exists, the idea of a PS5 and PSVR2 which can also do Standalone will be a hard fight (even Microsoft have washed their hands of competing....for now - also only focusing on commercial).

I am ordering extra popcorn for the Quest-2 vs. PSVR2 conflict to follow.

Agreed, even though PS5 may be equivalent to GTX 1080 in gpu power, careful optimizations may get like 50% more out of that gpu compared to GTX 1080. Would be way beyond anything the XR2 can do - and you might need PCVR with RTX 3060 or 2080 Super for similar PCVR performance. - thus might be a no-brainer for adoption, if the hmd and controllers are great.

I would amend this to - "...if the hmd, Tracking, and controller are great!"
This is the big issue - the news that the PS5 camera will not support PSVR - so we will be seeing a brand new camera, controller and headset for 2021 reveal - that is a tall order. I noted the patent that made Sony look like they were taking a page from the Index controller, but we know what happens with patents! But the XR processor > PS5 cable rumors seem to be more than just that, especially after the Sony BCD [behind closed doors] CES demo of their wifi5 streaming. Its easy to imagine a serious hybrid contender from Sony. But no way will it be sub $499!
