Back to Hogwarts - Walk and fly around the school - V.0755

Hello Rifters,

am I the only one, who wants to walk and fly around Hogwarts castle? I don't think so - so here's my solution:

BACK TO HOGWARTS
- a free, non-commercial fan project -

It's Version 0.755, but the FINAL VERSION, because I'm running out of my trial license.

Being an absolute beginner, - with no idea of programming -, to the whole topic, don't expect too much. It's just a (huge) demo to walk around Hogwarts on 4 terrains (only 2 more or less "finished") with a great looking Hogwarts model (made by DANIO MORENO), music (by HORRORPEN) a lake with an island and a tower on it, forests, animals, farm etc, etc ... and of course a working flying broomstick to fly over it all...

Although there would be so much to do (stop the "funny moving" of the trees (!), terrain design, repair the corrupted and adds the rest of the Hogwarts model; Adding: animations, Hogsmeade station, Hogsmeade village, more animated animals, a unicorn, griffon, dumbledore, more sounds, more interaction, game components etc, etc.....), but as I said, I'm running out of the license...

Before you start 2 things: :!:
1) !!!! ATTENTION: Takes a long time after the "Powered by Unity" sign to start !!!!!!
2) Two issues (without solution yet):

The tunnel: Normally it takes just a few seconds, but sometimes it seems, that you are stuck in there. You might have to wait to get to your destination. Wait and don't move!
Mounting the broomstick for the first time: Sometimes it doesn’t work! No idea, why. No solution yet. You have to start the demo again. !!!! GAMEPAD must be ready before starting the demo to work correctly!!!!

I recommend to read the "READ ME" PDF before starting (while downlaoding the demo e.g.). Download it here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/6gftfhfgnfhsd9d/Back%20to%20Hogwarts%20V0.755-%20README.pdf

And the Demo of course - "Back to Hogwarts - V.0755"

BACK TO HOGWARTS - THE DEMO

"LEVEL 1" - In the mood

You are at a - very well known - place, enjoying your holidays. While watching the sea and mountains, listening to the seagulls you get in a mood and remember the time at your old school of witchcraft and wizardry. Perhaps there's a way..... Well, why not visiting the OWL statue in the garden....

(BTW: Do you know, what the floo network is ??? )

"LEVEL 2" - Back again

Of course you know, that there is no direct way to Hogwarts castle, whether by apparation nor by floo network. And so the network transports you to a forest nearby. Follow the way down to Hogwarts Lake. Being there, you have the choice:

Go left and follow the way around the lake, passing some sheep and may visit a small farm and follow the way to the Boathouse (you should visit it!) and climb up the stairs to castle Hogwarts – and/or

Go right to the "Crow Tower" on the island in the lake. Find your hidden broomstick (if you need a way to reach the island - there will be one – remember, it’s Hogwarts nearby ;) )

Of course, if you fly on your broomstick, you can land everywhere on - even as possible - ground (Terrain & Crow Tower & big courtyard at the entrance of Hogwarts & inside Quidditch stadium & in ONE Hogwarts tower – with the dark brown wooden floor)

But don't smash Hagrid's pumpkins with your broomstick !!! ;-) )

I recommend to walk around first and then fly over the scene you have seen as a pedestrian before. But that's up to you. And the terrains on the right aren't finished (and so "empty") yet...

I also recommend to stay while walking around and to sit while flying...

For Game Controls - read the "Read Me" file please!!!!

I hope you enjoy hiking at hogwarts lake and flying over Hogwarts as much as I do.... :D

Gunair

PS: Again, big "Thank You" to DANI MORENO and "HORRORPEN" and to all makers of the used assets...

Hello. I know two small people who would love to try this. Is there any chance you can make builds for Mac and Linux? (For Linux choose 'x86 + x86_64 (Universal)'.)

    Hello again,

I have no idea of Linux or Mac, and cant test the built version here, but hear are a mac and a linux version.

Please, give some feedback, if it works or not.

"Read me" PDF (not included in the zip files) - but read it!!!:

Thanks for the Mac build. I think you're doing yourself down with modesty, this looks really good as far as I've played it so far! The portraits on the walls in the villa are a nice touch.

I've tried a few times but I haven't been able to mount the broomstick with 'F' on the keyboard. I've tried standing in different places around the owl statue but it doesn't help. It seems that the broomstick is necessary though for getting to Hogwarts so I haven't made it there yet. I'm uploading you a video of my first 10 minutes on the Mac so you can see how it's looking. There's some sort of issue with a black shadow creeping up through the floor in places.

Oh Good to hear, that the MAC built works!!

OH I should have better explained the demo to Non-Potter-fans I guess

The owl is just the "dooropener". You can't use THAT broomstick... If you visit the statue, you should see the floo network "advice" appearing... From that moment, the floo network is available. That means, you have to use the floo network to get to hogwarts, which means... step in the fireplace! (and that's the place, where I hope, the "tunnel" is working....)

And after that, the REAL demo begins (level 2)...

PS: I recommend a Gamepad, especially for flying...

I went through the fireplace and ended up in a phone box somewhere else. I walked around a bit and finally saw the castle across the water. I'm guessing you're supposed to fly across the water, but in lieu of a broom I walked under it. Then at a certain point after I'd made it to the other side the cliff face was too steep to negotiate so I had to give up there (this was all in the video I recorded for you). Is there a broomstick somewhere else that I'm supposed to pick up? Or do I have the broomstick with me the whole time? If the latter, then I can confirm that it isn't possible to mount the broomstick using 'F' on the keyboard on a Mac.

gunair, what a GREAT demo. The sheer vastness of the explorable area is amazing, with so many Harry Potter references and locations that can finally be seen in VR. I can't even imagine how long it took to put this together (actually I'm guessing 4 months since your Unity trial is up).

Any fans of Harry Potter should definitely try this one out!

You're right drash, my bad. I should have read the full PDF. I've just been back in to try and find the broomstick and got a little lost. I made it to the waterfall this time though -- intense audio, good stuff. Will go back in tomorrow and try to find the broomstick.

This is the problem with black shadows I mentioned: http://imgur.com/a/gSkbK#0

Walkthrough to get to the real broomstick that you can fly:
    NOTE: This video contains SPOILERS.

    From the youtube description:
The above contains SPOILERS. However, if you're stuck and curious where to find the broomstick in this Oculus Rift demo, this is the video for you. It's not the white broomstick next to the white owl in the Tuscany house area. It might not obvious what a "floo network" is if you haven't read/watched Harry Potter, and it takes a bit of searching to actually find the real broomstick on top of all that.

This video does not contain anything else from the demo other than what it takes to find the broomstick. There is a lot more in this demo and I'd encourage you to go play it yourself to look around. The explorable landscape is quite vast, and flying around on the broomstick is enjoyable once you get used to the controls.

:!: Big, BIG THANKS to drash for his video!!! :!: - I hope, it helps a lot.

Well, to be honest, I had no idea, that it may be SO difficult to find the broomstick! (and I couldn't imagine, that no one seems to read the "Readme" or the initial thread...)

Okay, just a few more things:

    1) "Floo network" means - Step in the fireplace!

    2) Stay on the Path to reach everything!

    3) There's no reason to go into the water! Never! Life in the demo isn't so sad!!

    4) To find the broomstick: Watch drash's video OR go about 40 meters to the right, when you are at the lake shore "T" crossing (you hear the crows) , and turn then left. Theres a gap between the trees at the shore. Walk on the island...

    5) Dont't go further to the right. There's a way, but there is nothing to see (yet).

    6) Drash is right. It's a vast area! When RUNNING through the area (on the path), it takes, - From demo start, AROUND (not through) the lake, without visiting the farm, climbing upstairs, - round about 6 minutes to reach Hogwarts castle! And then you haven't even stoppped to SEE anything of the demo...

    7) You can reach every Hogwarts reference location of the demo WITHOUT flying - Hogwarts castle, Hagrid's hut, the stone circle, the quidditch stadium, the whomping willow. The greenhouses are inaccessible, because the model is corrupted there...

    8) It REALLY helps, reading the "READ ME" file, especially for flying and landing!! Really! ;)

Last request: I can't see, how many people have already downloaded the demo or tryed it - so give me some feedback please, if you liked it or not! And which things were okay and which one should become better... Perhaps I will have the opportunity to work on the demo in the future (DK2 with a new trial?)

    Thanks,

    Gunair

This is one of my favorite demos so far. I loved the views, the boathouse and the castle. there are many details scattered around that add a lot of realism to the scene. Love the animated piggies.

As I'm an enthuasiast consumer and not really a developer, I don't think I could make good use of my unity pro trial... I just wonder whether it's against some rule to give away the trial license code to someone who could really use and need it?

Heheh.. When I read the messages and saw the "x86 + x86_64 (Universal)" line, the first thing I thought was "I don't remember writing in this thread??" Thanks for including me in Your request :)

Tried the demo - and liked it a lot. Thanks. I do have some issues with control mappings in the Linux version - but since it seems the right trigger isn't used, I think I can fix it from the Unity input pane.

This could be quite fun if You keep working on it! There was some issues with sounds (from the lake) that was too persistent even if You was far from the lake (at the "stadium"), but a lot of things worked very well. I really liked the intro-part that "melted" away, and I thought it was brilliant to use the Tuscany house (which is home away from home for a lot of us now). Also the Owl, the fire and the portraits were a great touch - and I loved the chimney on the phone-booth! :-)

    Hi Gunair,
Just discovered your demo and being a huge fan of HP I ofcourse had to try it. Very nice work so far!! Really impressive considering you have just started with Unity just a couple of months ago. I really like the scale of it. I have walked around for the past 15 minutes to enjoy the scenery and can't wait to go find the broomstick now. Will take a quick peek at the Drash video and off I go. Keep working on it, man! Est ist super!!

Holy crap, I was about to quit it after 14 min of loading in that freaking tunnel and just when I put the rift back on for a last try, I appeared :D

Enjoyed this quite much, however my broom had quite a strong drift to the left and I could not dismount for the love of god. However, very well done so far, thanks for the experience and a shame that you will not continue!

Thank you for the nice response!

@Gablar: Well, the boathouse and the castle are not my work - Dani Moreno did that GREAT JOB! (i just worked on it to repair the corrupted mesh data). But I totally agree - esp. the boathouse is fantastic! I like the piggies too (and of course my sheep ;) ) although, they are (as the rest) unfinished. They need some more animations, different (dirtier) texture and of course audio! Sad to say, that here are many animals more (Goats, more rabbits, cows, snakes, spiders....) waiting to be in the demo...

@FictionX: Great to hear, that the Linux version works! The waterfall is a little bit to loud and not well balanced yet, your are right. But it was the last thing I added and there was no time left to do it 100% correct... The melting "Maruders Map" effect wasn't planned at the beginning, but I had this effect - which not worked at the other place I wanted to use it - and so the idea came up. Like many things in the demo - it happend by chance. I really love things like that, it's like the demo has a life of itself somehow.... :D .Yes the chimney! It was "logical"to have a chimney on a phone boothe - in the second you start thinking it that wonderful, crazy, lovable way of the Potter universe :D

@Darius: I guess, as an HP fan, you didn't need any hint, what the floo-network is or how to use it, right? ;) I hope you enjoy flying around as much as walking around! (but I'm quite sure ;) ) - btw, it's the only way to get INSIDE the quidditch stadium and to see, where all the students are ;) .

@nuin: I hereby declare, that you will get the great golden "Back to Hogwarts" medal for persistance and patience! 14 mins waiting! To be honest, i wouldn't have waited so long. The sad thing, is, that I have NO idea why it happens sometimes, I'm very sorry!!! But I love to hear, that you enjoyed it anyhow!

Sadly - my license ran out yesterday night....

BTW: Does anobody knows, IF a second four month trial could be activated? Or perhaps did a second activation ??? Because I want to continue the work on the demo - Too many references of the HP universe are there, that I want to see in the demo... ;)

    Gunair

PS:  Oops - I just noticed, that I forgot to delete the first Hogsmeade station building... shouldn't be there  It can be found in the middle of the big, green - apart from that empty - terrain (better use the broomstock, if you want to go there!)

    Hi Gunair,
I have found the broom and took it for a flight. Took a little time to understand the controller controls but then when I got the hang of it I flew everywhere. That was really great. As a matter of fact, I found the forgotten Hogsmeade station building and when I entered, there was a dementor inside. It started to hunt me down and I fled to Hogwarts and hid in the basement. Only to find out a mushroom-crazed troll was lurking there. With the right combination of spells I was able to defeat him and when I searched his pockets I found an unused Unity Pro 4-months Trial license. What are the odds, I ask you? :D

    PM me and it's yours.

I flew into a tower, bounced off it and landed upside down inside the roof looking over a courtyard.. I got stuck there and couldn't get out as it appeared some of my broom went through the roof.

The only thing I could do was exit.

It'd be good to have a reset command which moves you a set amount up the z axis, y axis and x axis. Or set 10 or so 'safe' points in the map and have it reset you to the nearest one.

Have to say I'm not a big fan of sitting side saddle on the broom. I assume that was intentional but I'd prefer to look fowards with it under me.

Outside of that feedback it's a very enjoyable experience. I'd like to hear the Harry Potter theme tune a bit more as it's a magical tune and adds alot of ambience. There is a lot to explore here and I mean to go back to it again now that I have a better idea how to fly the broomstick.

Loved the start. I actually thought it was broken for a moment! :)

    Hi!

First of all, sorry that I didn't answered earlier, but I wasn't home for the last four days (further training).

Drachenherz, Darius and camster: Thank you for your generous offer! :!:

As I wote to Drachenherz (who was the first ;) ) ). At the moment I am not 100% sure, if a second trial version would work. Many people supposed it here, but there wasn't any postings here which stated "I did it and it works" yet. But I think, its just a question of time...

In the meantime, there's also one thing to do for me first. Unity crashes always, while working on the project. Perhaps it's too much content for Unity, with 4 terrains and a lot of assets (and the huge hogwarts file)... . But with the crashing - it's no fun to work. 15 Unity restarts for just putting the piggies (2 pigs, the fences and a little bit terrain painting) in the scene... I'll try to fix it before I accept your trial offer.

@Darius: Azkaban? THAT would be indeed a quest! But a nice idea... :))
But I think .... "basement" ..."Troll".... sounds .... hmmm.... good too... ;)

@kalorvoe: I do not have a seeker game in it. So, please continue with your work. Although I know, that there are two other people doing things like that. But just working on a project IS lot of fun, believe me. And you learn the basics for other projects. So, if you need help - contact me (although I'm a beginner too)...

@Riftxdev: I know about the problems with being stuck in the roofs or somewhere else. It's one of the first things I want to fix, when I continue work. By now, if you're stuck, try the "Parameter window- full engine energy" workaround... To be honest, there was a "reset" command in the game (you see it in the parameter window) but it's not longer there... But I will put it back again...

You sit sidesaddle on the broom? hmmm... You should sit in the middle of the broom.... strange. I had a better postioning of the pilot, after dismount and mounting again, but I lost that progress, when unity crashed again and removed (!) the WHOLE scene file... had no time to repeat it again.

The music is indeed great and before I inserted in in the demo, I had no idea of how important it could be for the athmosphere. The musician "horrorpen" did it (don't know his name). Actually, the two parts (the "Marauders map" chime beginning and the "Fly-music") is one piece of music called "No more magic". And I'm really glad, that I found it - it's so Harry potter like.

I have to admit, that in the moment I read about Drachenherz' offer, the little broomstiock in my brain raised again and started flying around with new ideas...

    But I ask YOU:

What would you like to see in the demo :?:

Great to have you back, Gunair. We were starting to think you had become a victim of a vanishing-spell :D

I have asked Cybereality|Oculus if it is allowed to giveaway a trial code and according to him it is no problem. The provided serialcode is not bound to any account. The only thing is that you will have to try-out is, if your Unity installation will accept a new trialcode. Maybe they put in a little registry-thingy to check but perhaps not. I think you will have to try the Drachenherz trialcode to find out if it works. And I guess you will be the first dev on this board to actually try it. So be a pioneer!

What I would like to see in the demo? Characters ofcourse. A day/night toggle would be great. And for flying .. what makes the experience better is to see my legs and hands of my virtual avatar. Makes it more real.

Hope you can fix the crashes. Maybe a reinstall of your operating system? Or more memory?

Anyway .. hope you will continue building the demo.

Great demo! It locked up a few times in the transition from Tuscany to Hogwarts, but oh well. It was very atmospheric, with a great sense of scale and distance. The pacing was also quite comfortable for VR. I enjoyed traveling by foot and (once I got the hang of it) flying. As for improvements, a bit more music would be nice (I was actually thinking about putting some on outside of the demo, but I didn't know if there would be more music within the demo (and there was when I got on the broomstick, which was nice)). But this is cool. Makes me wish someday there might be something like a sandbox Harry Potter RPG.

    Hi!

Yes, I will try drachenherz trial code, and become a pioneer :D But I have to try some things because of Unitys crashings first... I have a also a Windows 8 partition on my Computer, which is nearly unused and "empty"... I will install Unity there, download and install the used assets again... and hope it works better... More memory isn't an option, because Unity is a 32Bit software...

A day /night toggle would be nice, indeed, especially an illuminated Hogwarts would be interesting - but the rest would be very dark.... Hmmm...

Legs and Arms were already planned from the beginning. I think it's not so complicated to built in. It's on the list...
And characters of course. I will add some buildings, but I think "life" in the demo is more important. So I will add animals (farm and forest) and perhaps some from the "dark side" - perhaps to interact with... The "troll" idea was also interesting.. ;) And a wizard perhaps? And drachenherz had a wish for the demo too... ;)

But the first thing I will change is the transition from Tuscany to Hogwarts...

Some more music? Yes, as I wrote before, I absolutely understimated music for the athmosphere. I will add some more, but only for "special" areas or actions. I think that's a better effect...isn't it? I hope to find some other pieces of music, as appropriate for a Harry Potter demo as horrorpens "No More Magic"....

A Harry Potter RPG is a nice idea. I can't do this of course, but I think about more interaction, perhaps something with a wand... fighting agains animals or doing a vanishing-spell ;) or to smash Hagrids pumpkins (although you can do it with your broom) :D

So, there's much to do. But now, as I know that you like the demo, it's a big motivation. Thanks for that!

That's all for now (Back on the forum on thursday)

Oki doki Gunair, I'm glad I can help you pioneering the unity pro trial stacking challenge! PM sent... I really hope my trial code works for you. It would be so cool to fly around your hogwarts demo like in the "flying in dreams"-demo! Or even better - if it were possible to fly and hover!

Thanks for putting all this effort into this, really hope you can continue on this project.

It'd be good if the demo had some puzzle elements. Do one thing to lead to another etc.

Start with finding the broom. Use the broom at the quidditch area to find a snich flying around the area that, when caught (with a key for 'catch') opens a new piece of content, say it gives you access to a wand you can find on the dorm roof. Once you have the wand you can go and blow Voldemort away who is waiting on the bridge between hogwarts and the forest bit (bridge over waterfall) and then end the demo there.

Up to that point have voldemort kill you if you get too close.
