If you are a dev looking to get started on the Gear VR my suggestion is order Google Cardboard (Dodo Case sells the best right now) or other mobile HMD, and use the Durovis Dive Plugin + Unity. You won't get any of the hardware acceleration…
There will be an official VR Cinema app and i'm sure many devs will release apps to watch movies (2D and 3D SBS) from your device. You can already do this with google cardboard where there are a few different vr cinema apps.
