Original post:

Hi everyone!

You may remember us from the last VR Jam with Chicken Walk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esJ46uJpQwo

So a lot of people seem to be doing multiplayer games, probably because of the multi-user interaction judging criteria and hey we're doing one as well!

This is a 2 person co-op game where one person plays an FPS game while the other has a top down view and has to guide the first player around the map. Communication is key to complete levels as each player will have different information and you need both for the full picture.

We're also going for an abstract/surreal look with a limited colour pallet. Everything is made from scratch during the jam (no pre-made assets!) and this is the first networked game we've made (never touched netcode before!) so it will be a bit of a learning experience for us. What we've made is a vertical slice of a bunch of mechanics we'd add into a full game. Post jam we'll probably firm up the story line a bit and replace the photo memories with images related to the story and add a photo/audio/secret unlock gallery and a saving mechanic.

Hopefully it will be as popular as Chicken Walk 😉

Setup
Requires 2 Gear VRs
Both devices need to be on the same wifi network with internet access.
It can work over the internet but you need to forward port 25000.
Ideally you should play in the same room so you can talk to eachother.
No gamepad required, touchpad only.

Instructions
Client:
  • Swipe forward to walk
  • Walk towards the memory cubes to collect them
  • Tap to pick up and put down
  • Swipe back to rotate objects
  • Look at buttons and tap to activate
  • Pick up the gem to complete the level

    Host:
  • Look at the holo table to interact with it
  • While looking at the table, swipe left/right to rotate
  • Swipe up/down to zoom in/out
  • Tap on memories to pick up and put down
  • Tap on an audio memory to start playing (syncs over the net)
  • While audio is playing, swipe left/right to scrub through the timeline
  • Swipe up/down to change audio pitch/speed (headphones recommended)
  • Hold the touch pad to create a pointer on the map

Most importantly both players should be constantly communicating as some objects only appear in one view and not the other. Search for clues and watch out for guards.

I'm all for multiplayer games but 4 of my family/friends have an iphone and 9 have a Samsung phone but i'm the only one with a Note 4 and Gear VR and i know noone with a Oculus Rift. Maybe that will change with the Galaxy S6 tho.

So if you have Co-op gameplay best is when you also have a 1 player option (maybe with view switching or the CPU could take over the co-op part if you need it or a human player via online multiplayer option). Unless the Co-op part doesnt require the same hardware twice like with "Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes" or if the co-op part could be done with a regular smartphone 2D app.

    Anyway looking forward to it.

Anything built by the creators of Chicken Walk is sure to be great. Looking forward to what you have to show us.

Thanks Drash! No pressure then lol.

The role of the top down view can be played at a normal PC as it's meant to be the operator role any way. Imagine the guy in Inception who watches the dreamers, except he can see and influence what's going on in the dive.

For the Jam though we'll be focusing on Gear VRs and touch pad input.

Great concept, best of luck to you 🙂
There was a dungeon crawling game we've seen at Rezzed 2015 that featured a player in VR and somebody seeing the game from a top down perpective on PC, I'm trying hard to remember the name, maybe you know about it.

Thanks, we were exhibiting at Rezzed in the xbox room (Kaiju Panic) so didn't get round to seeing all the other games.
If you are talking about one of the indie left field games then it might have been http://taphobos.com/

I didn't get to try it but they had an interesting concept of multi-user interaction from different view points with one guy in a coffin.

In our game both players will have a more direct interaction with the levels though and hopefully will create some cool mechanics for VR.

I had another idea that uses a Leap Motion controller for input but I think that's against Jam rules, maybe next time 🙂

Uploaded a dev video to challenge post.

It only shows player 1's view, player 2 is in a hologram room analysing the memories (the cubes) collected by player 1 and relays information back to player 1 (best if both players are in the same room)
Don't watch if you don't want any spoilers as it's a bit of a puzzle game.

    Recorded using google chrome.
