So yea there seems to be no end to small 360 cameras now coming out,
just wondering what are other peoples opinions on them any clear favourites or ones that stand out ?

@dbledsoe your test footage is very good, can i ask what type of set up your using and how your experience has been setting up shots?

Speculating about the future the 13th Lab acquisition might have something to do with this.

At the bottom of there website http://13thlab.com/ they say that have something cool in the Lab that they are not willing to show just yet. As everything 13th Lab does is based around there SLAM algorithms I reckon that the secret thing in the Lab is a 360 video rig with all the cameras overlapping each over so that their SLAM algos can use the overlapping camera views to compute a depth map for the 360 video panorama. So when you play it back you can use displacement mapping to make a true 3d video panorama with the position tracking working and your individual IPD instead of the crude hairy ball 3d video we have right now. By recognizing static background and rotating objects with there algos they could even automatically create layers for things that are occluded in the first 360 video layer. Or alternatively perhaps a voxel or point cloud or polygon animation could be made or some hybrid.

Although a rig big enough for parallax would not be small and compact so maybe I am drifting off topic. A small depth camera would have to use lidar like Nimble.

@SAeire Our test footage is captured with our own custom designed 7 GoPro 3+black rig. I've also designed a simple point array that we place around the camera that we used to build a stitch for given scene, looks kind of like mocap balls. This gives me consistent stitch points regardless of the scene we shoot, and depending on if the shot is of something close, or far we adjust the distance of the point array from the camera. My experience with this rig and process has been quite good. I am not using video stitch or the like because a grand is a rip off for convenience of speed. We batch process everything on super fast computers using PTgui Pro

I'm looking for a good 360 camera to use with a Rift. Not looking for 3D, just a basic pano camera with a large vertical FOV. http://www.360.tv/home
This one claims to have a 300 degree vertical FOV, the largest commercially available FOV I've seen advertised.
Thoughts?

Pardon me for reviving an old thread...

@dbledsoe Your stitching results are excellent! I'm really curious about the point array. Would you be willing to elaborate and/or share some behind the scenes photos of the array setup?
