Hi Everyone!
Just wanted to share what I made for the VR Jam. This was super fun and a great experience! So here it is!

This is Gator Time!
0010_1-Title-Screen.png

I wanted to make a game that gives you the feeling of being inside a cartoon, so the graphics are a mix of 2d and 3d graphics.

You start off playing as Larry Gator, you are in the first person perspective
0009_2-GatorFPS.png

This makes things difficult though because being a gator you have a long mouth, which makes things tricky if the world in it happens to have platforms and obstacles in it
0008_3-Struggles-of-jumping-high.png

So you meet a strange fellow who tells you about another option
0007_4-who-gives-you-a-gift-of-a-3pc.png

He tells you about third person cameras and how they can follow you around and beam what they see directly into your brain so you can see yourself in the third person perspective
and he gives you his extra one, so you try it on!
0006_5-you-try-a-3pc.png

You try it more and go on a little adventure
0005_6-you-try-it-more.png

The story goes on and you eventually end up going on an adventure to collect pies
0004_7-sending-you-on-a-journey-to-collect-pies.png

Watch out for obstacles!
0003_8-watch-out-for-things.png

And monsters!!!
0001_10-watch-out-for-monsters.png

Now with your new third person camera life is much easier
You eventually end up climbing really really high...(this part is super fun!)

Mixing the 2d and 3d worlds with the Oculus is super fun!

Some notes on the game
    * Everything in this was made by myself, I did the graphics, programming, music, voices, and all that stuff. So you might find a random bug here and there. The only thing I didn't make was the Tuscany Skybox prefab * If for some reason you get stuck press the home key and that should reset the level. * If you want to skip the whole story part and get right to collecting pies you can do that in the options section * Make sure you increase pizza levels in the options too * The menus are being a little weird I need to fix them for sure(as well as other things I'll constantly be tweaking) * This will work right out of the box with a gamepad too (it's really fun to play with that)

Here is the original video I made for the second milestone too

And here is a download to the game! I made a little update to it this morning so it's slightly different than what I submitted to the jam yesterday.

I hope you enjoy the game! Thanks so much for checking it out!

I love the 2.5D art style here. I used the same art style in my jam game.
  • Thanks for checking it out! I saw your game too that was super cool! I was actually thinking a Frogger type game would be really neat with the Rift. Very cool!
  • Man, Love this demo, it really felt like stepping into a very odd surreal dream!

    ... ALTHOUGH

Do i really have to use the mouse to rotate the character?

Im not sure why the gator does not follow the direction you are looking in, The control method made it pretty much unplayable for most of us.

Thanks so much for checking it out! Yeah I'm still working with the controls, even though the VR jam is over I'm still working on the game, so any suggestions I'm all ears!

    Thanks again!

Woah I didn't know he played it! Do you have a link? I love his channel! I looked for it and couldn't seem to find it

I was honored to have RockleeSmile play it today and he sang the tunes from the game, he's got a great voice!

He is trying to play every submission and this was the second stream.

Here you can find the game list (unofficial) with some more info:

You did Soda Drinker Pro, right? I can't say I played it, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. :)

I'll have to see if RockLeeSmile is interested in trying out my jam game! He's been really cool to indies before.

Yup that's me :) I'm working on the Oculus version of Soda Drinker too, it's coming along nicely! It's really fun to drink a simulated Soda with the Rift!

Thanks for the links! I'll be sure to watch everyone else games too, this is really cool that he's doing this!
  • Ends up I made a version that people without the Rift can play too. It's a little different from the Rift Version (it was meant specifically for the Rift so there are some features that only work with the Rift) but I figured I'd put out this version to see what people thought of it too. Today one of my favorite Youtube Channels (Indie Impressions) made a video on the game. Here's a link if you want to check it out.

  • This is really fun, love the style. The "Gator Time" song at the beginning is catchy, haha.

Its cute.. but I really really really want the gator snout to move with my head! That would up the playability for me by a ton :)

Also, definitely needs controller and movement speed support :)

Cute though, I really love the idea of having a snout like that. Kinda neat :)

Thanks so much for checking it out! I'll definitely have the snout move with your head in the next build (it's weird it was working properly before but for some reason in the latest build it wasn't connecting) I'll absolutely have that fixed soon. As well as controller and movement speed support.

    Thanks again!

I really like the specific art style of this game and the narration, it reminded me of some click-n-point adventures I played as a kid, so I had weird nostalgia feeling during this game :D I find it interesting to mix 2D platformer with Oculus Rift, with the ability to look ahead.

A couple of suggestions if I may though: The 3D first person camera beginning uses mouse for both horizontal and vertical camera movement, which made me really sick. I think it's best to use mouse only for horizontal movement and head tracking for vertical (looking up and down). The snout also looked like it was several meters long and wide. Have you tried making it smaller (ideally in the real world size), but putting it closer to the camera, so it doesn't look huge in the Rift and still blocks your view?

Also the walk speed in 2D mode seems to change based on where I'm looking at.

Lastly, I think it would be good to focus to blend the 3D and 2D style together, to me, it felt a bit "messy", the 2D and 3D element styles didn't match that well visually, but that's just my opinion ^^'

Anyway, I enjoyed it and I wonder what will happen next,
when the cloud guy got attacked at the end
    :D
  • Glad it wasn't just me struggling with the control method.

Really Looking forward to this getting the controller update, I absolutely loved the feel of the world, made me feel like i was in southpark.

Thanks so much for checking it out I should have an update on the game with updated controls soon too.

I was just thinking about how amazing it is these new type of games we can make with the Oculus. When you said it made you feel like you are "in southpark" I thought about how neat it is that people are really entering the worlds we are all creating and experiencing them in ways that never existed!

Things that might not have been as interesting in normal games are incredibly interesting (for example I can just walk around different rift worlds and enjoy looking at things) and it's because we are "inside" the worlds we are creating for each other.

It might sound corny, but it's super inspirational and really an honor to think anyone is playing in the world I made. Also to be compared to Southpark is an extra compliment (I love that show)

It's so cool to see what everyone else has made too, it's like I'm stepping into the developers mind and experiencing their world in the way they want me to experience it.

It's so exciting to be doing this stuff!

    Yeah!!!
  • Just gave this a try and I think I've spent more time on it than any other game/demo/show

It really works well graphically and the music is superb. No issues with it at all. Voices worked well too with the game.

One thing that would be nice is the lips to move similar to whats being said, but that's a minor thing and might actually be some of the charm :)

Really enjoyed it and will play again.
  • Love the music and feel/atmosphere of the game, had some problems getting past that second bird once you go 2D. :P

3rd person camera could be a little further away from the character to give you more of an overview.
The red spiky things were kind of annoying, especially since there wasn't a checkpoint behind em.

The game can be pretty sadistic at times, like when I managed to fall down from here and touched a flag right at the beginning by mistake: http://abload.de/img/gatortimeoculus2013-0ifsa6.png

I pushed on to the "To be continued..." screen and managed to gather all but one pie though: http://abload.de/img/gatortimeoculus2013-02rsyg.png

    Also definitely needs Controller support.
