Into the Radius is awesome with the Rift CV1 - impressions with and without DLSS

Into the Radius is the first VR game to support DLSS. What's DLSS some may ask - it's this, and may improve performance quite a lot:

- and Into the Radius is this game:

The game does remind me of Stalker - but I really didn't like the game using the Valve Index, fortunately using the Rift CV1 is a total game changer, at least to me. Note that I have not tested the game using DLSS with the Index yet, my Index impressions are based on the game before DLSS became available.

Using the Valve Index all flaws are easily observed - tons of jaggies and pixelated 2D plants/grass/vegetation really ruined my immersion with the Valve Index (lcd). This game has been in development for a long time, and might be made by devs in parts of the world where the Valve Index would be extremely expensive - so I suspected the devs never really tested this game with high-res hmds, but designed the game for older 1st gen oled hmds. Seems I was right - at least without DLSS, but feel free to have a totally different opinion, I'm just stating my observations here.

Using CV1 ss 2.0 powered by the RTX 3090 I got solid 90 fps with all in-games graphics settings maxed. And visually the game looked night and day better (still with DLSS deactivated). Gone were all jaggies, and yes vegetation is still 2D, but I failed to notice it - because all the shimmering jaggies were gone, and the vegetation no longer stood out against the background, but was perfectly integrated. That's the CV1's strength - it's able to produce an image quality where I no longer notice individual pixels. It's much harder to design games for high-res lcd hmds, because the clarity is so much better. I'd say that using CV1 ss 2.0, Into the Radius looked about 10 times better than using Index res 150% (could not go higher with my GTX 1080, which I used to test the game back then - ending up refunding the game on Steam).

I felt totally (or close) immersed with the CV1 ss 2.0, all the jaggies and in-your-face 2D plants broke my immersion with lcd.

Now, DLSS is available as an in-game graphics option now. It required a driver update, but got the newest Nvidia driver 466.47, and then I could turn on DLSS.

There are 4 different settings for DLSS - Quality, Balanced, Performance, and Ultra Performance. I made the error of thinking that Ultra Performance was the best setting, lol, it's by far the worst setting and may severely degrade image quality compared to deactivating DLSS. Maybe Ultra Performance will result in much better performance than without DLSS, but with the RTX 3090 I got solid 90 fps no matter what I did. For more thorough DLSS performance with the Valve Index and Reverb G2 hmds, read this article:

 https://babeltechreviews.com/dlss-vr-into-the-radius-performance-benchmarked-with-the-reverb-g2-valv...

- or in short:

VALVE INDEX

90 Hz res 110%: RTX 3080 DLSS OFF = 209 FPS

90 Hz res 110%: RTX 3080 DLSS ON = 199 FPS (-5%)

120 Hz res 110%: RTX 3080 DLSS OFF = 194 FPS

120 Hz res 110%: RTX 3080 DLSS ON = 244 FPS (+26 %)

90 Hz res 110%: RTX 2080 TI DLSS OFF = 156 FPS

90 Hz res 110%: RTX 2080 TI DLSS ON = 192 FPS (+23%)

120 Hz res 110%: RTX 2080 TI DLSS OFF = 145 FPS

120 Hz res 110%: RTX 2080 TI DLSS ON = 150 FPS (+3 %)

HP REVERB G2

90 Hz res 100%: RTX 3080 DLSS OFF = 97 FPS

90 Hz res 100%: RTX 3080 DLSS ON = 99 FPS (+2%)

90 Hz res 100%: RTX 2080 TI DLSS OFF = 91 FPS

90 Hz res 100%: RTX 2080 TI DLSS ON = 97 FPS (+7%)

Here the highest quality level of DLSS was used, and gains range from -5% to +26%. Average 9%. Seems Index gained more than Reverb G2 though, but results are all over the place, could make you question the fps measuring methods at BableTechReviews.

Now, testing the highest quality of DLSS using CV1 ss 2.0 is not the most easy task. Because ss 2.0 is about 17 mill pixels per image and already provides tons of super sampling - and Deep Learning Super Sampling may not be able to provide so much more.

I found an area with a lot of white sticks in the ground - or maybe it was dead trees, whatever. With DLSS set to off there was a more shimmering image quality surrounding these white sticks - but using DLSS Quality (=highest DLSS setting) the shimmering was gone. So you do get even better super sampling quality, but you also get slightly reduced sharpness. Extremely tiny branches on distant trees are slightly easier to see without DLSS - as DLSS slightly reduces sharpness and contrast. I bet that many persons would not be able to tell if DLSS Quality was on or off if they tried Into the Radius using my rig with CV1 ss 2.0 - you have to truly know what to look for, so for some DLSS may be a feinschmecker option.

Then there is performance - but I'm getting a solid 90 fps no matte what I do, so the performance aspect may be lost, depending on your gpu. DLSS may be much more relevant in games where you get bad performance, maybe like No Man's Sky.

In short - DLSS Quality may give you the best antialiased image quality in Into the Radius, and it does look great, but you'll lose a little amount of sharpness when looking at very tiny (far away) objects. Maybe performance gains are awesome with the DLSS Quality, but such gains may be more relevant for owners of RTX 2060-2080 and 3060 gpus.

No matter what - with the CV1 ss 2.0, DLSS Quality or not, I'm greatly looking forward to getting back "Into the Zone".

@RuneSR2  Thanks for all that mate.  I managed to get this included in my VivePort Infinity sub and fortunately it is the latest version (same as Steam).  I tried it with DLSS Balanced mode and it all seems to work nice and smooth.  Looks fantastic with my oled Vive Pro with 160% SteamVR SS.  Second best (almost as good but lower fov) with my Quest 1 oled with Link.  Far from a distant 3rd place goes to my Q2 wireless w/Air Link (90Hz) and that's probably what I'll continue to use once I get back into this.  Too much game backlogs right now.  I still have not even properly finished MOH or HLA yet, lol!  Both of those are best with my Vive Pro and Index controllers imho.  Thanks again for your detailed review mate.  Always an interesting read.

Thanks, Tom, but can't you use DLSS Quality instead of Balanced? Quality should be the better option and still perform flawlessly.

I did only check Quality and Ultra Performance, so no idea how much worse Balanced is compared to Quality 🙂

I've only tried Balanced because that's what I read (somewhere?) to initially use.  When I get back to this later I'll try the other modes.  Everything looked great with Balanced and ran ultra smooth on all my headsets.

After some testing, it seems DLSS isn't learning that much at night, lol. Activating DLSS at night, I got some strange trailing when moving my hands - maybe the Deep Learning is guessing. Deactivating DLSS the trailing went away. Never happened in broad daylight, only in very dark locations or at night. I've informed the devs.

The game is quite hard, I've already died several times - also the game does not hold your hand - maybe I can find some inspiration (or help 😉) here:

Btw, devs just wrote back - basically they said not to enable DLSS when you have a card as strong as the RTX 3090:

"With the 3090, I'd say DLSS is completely optional, better disable it."

But DLSS does provide some nice antialiasing touches even with the 3090, guess the devs don't care about making Ferraris run faster, but concentrate on more normal vehicles, lol.

Into the Radius has come a long way, and is starting to remind me slightly of Half-Life. Devs just posted new screenshots on Steam - maybe time to revisit the game, this looks amazing!

So far new screenshots are only on Steam, the Rift Store version has the same - now old - screenshots.

I haven't played this for a long while with VivePort.  I actually uninstalled it.  I was surprised to see that VivePort also got the new updates so I thought I'd give it a go again.  Works great with my Q2/rtx3090 wireless with Air Link.  Work very well with my amoled Vive Pro w/Index controllers as well and the colours/contrast is fantastic!  Thanks for the heads up on the update mate.
