This is great news - earlier Red Matter 2 was only confirmed for Querst 2, but devs have now revealed that the game launches for both PCVR and Quest August 18 - see the Steam page here:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2081470/Red_Matter_2/

Interestingly, only Rift and Index hmds are supported - and since Index often is more or less auto-supported on Steam, the game may work best only with Oculus hmds - we'll see.

Some of us did expect that the game would launch for PCVR, as the trailer looks like the PCVR version with high-res textures, high poly count and nice lighting:

When the trailer arrived, RoadToVR also wrote: "[...] the game’s announcement trailer (below) is probably captured on PC" - so the PCVR version is not surprising, but great that high-end VR users don't have to wait months for the full and unreduced version of the game.

Recommended system requirements are not known, but some shots do look great:

The carpet looks very high-res

A great view

Now I have to finish Red Matter soon, sigh - so many games, so little time 😅

I like how the handhelds in the game reflect to an extent the actual touch controller irl

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Latest news, although the Quest 2 version of Red Matter 2 might look good, devs wrote that the PC version by far will be king - but of course the Quest 2 only uses an extremely slow Adreno 650 gpu made for phones (part of the XR2 SoC) - while we can use extremely fast PC gpus for the PCVR version:

"Visually, the experience on PC is unmatched. Textures are higher resolution as well as the render solution. We also feature other bells and whistles like dynamic shadows. Overall the game looks very very crisp on PC. If graphics is what you care about the most, go for PC!"

No doubt I'll buy this game now. The game is cross-buy with Rift.

With Red Matter 2 approacing, I kinda feel the stress completing the first one - problem is, I refuse to use walkthroughs and chances of getting stuck in one of the many puzzles are high.

Also what a nice way to inititate a "Cognition - Get Fit Course" 🤣 Opening this safe last night was ... fun 🤔 (I removed the correct combination - no spoilers 😇)

Red Matter is true VR, highest quality all the way - or close. The game has gotten some heat for being short - but I don't think it - for most persons - is a short game if you do not cheat and get help. The essence of the game is solving puzzles - getting help ruins the game. Of course there may be instances where it's necessary to get help, if a puzzles keeps you stuck for a long time and makes you stop playing the game.

Well, I've had the game for 4 years, maybe it's time to complete it 😅

Red Matter is soaked in temporal antialiasing (TAA) which cannot be disabled, and it's extremely blurry using lcd. Red Matter is another game that shines with Rift CV1 due to TAA being sharp. I greatly prefer Rift CV1 for this game.

With the RTX 3090 I can use CV1 ss 2.5, about 27 mill pixels per frame (compare that the a 4K TV with 8 mill pixels per image or HD TV with 2 mill pixels per image) - and the game looks awesome with the Rift CV1. Here are some impressions - I took these screenshots while playing Red Matter last night:

OculusScreenshot1658962273.JPG

Red Matter looks breathtakingly beautiful - see how sharp the background is? - That's due to ss 2.5

OculusScreenshot1658960430.JPG

See the imperfections/scratches on the floor - textures are insanely good, simply feels real

OculusScreenshot1658960453.JPG

Scratches on the monitor - devs behind Wanderer may have gotten some inspiration here

OculusScreenshot1658960545.JPG

These are ultramersion textures, at least for the hand. See the details in the cloth and the small stitches?

Environments are great:

I'd like a room like shown above - and I found a tape, so I could watch red matter on TV 😎

OculusScreenshot1658964436.JPG

Nice polygon count in the game too - see the round shapes

Also found more red ... stuff 😬

I've arrived at the location shown in the last image, so I'm not through the game yet. Looking forward to continue.

If you have not played Red Matter, do not miss out on this title - it's one of the very best VR adventure games, and may easily last for 10 hours or so if you don't get any help solving puzzles.

The quality of Red Matter with dynamic shadows, high polygon count and ultramersion textures is much higher than the average VR game released today. Maybe due to Oculus funding, devs were able to do something extraordinary with the awesome immersion quality of Red Matter - I'm glad I waited finishing the game until I had enough gpu power to get 90 fps while using very high res. My rating of Red Matter would be 9.5/10 - but only using Rift CV1, with blurry Index and Revive it's probably like 6/10.

I don't expect Red Matter 2 to be better than Red Matter, if the devs can keep the same mindblowingly high quality I'm happy. But would be great getting rid of the blurry TAA for lcd hmd owners.

Btw, devs wrote that Red Matter 2 is much bigger than Red Matter:

"The game is certainly much longer. What I can say is Red Matter 2 has easily 4 to 5 times more content than the first game."

Source: https://steamcommunity.com/app/2081470/discussions/0/3410930328925026032/

I expect the price to be $30, maybe with a 10% off the first days...

Maybe nice to show the good old trailer for Red Matter, it's only 4 years old 🙂

I got through Red Matter today - it was a great experience. Now I'm ready for Red Matter 2 😎 Red Matter contains a strong story, maybe a good idea to finish Red Matter before starting Red Matter 2 🤔

For those needing help with the ending, it's discussed here:

I took a few more shots - and quite strange to finish a game, my backlog is gigantic, I never have time to finish games, lol - but this one was special:

OculusScreenshot1659026450.JPG

Still using Rift CV1, but image quality using oled and ss 2.5 is amazing

OculusScreenshot1659029457.JPG

Dynamic shadows, easy to see in the game due to oled, but I had to increase brightness a lot to show the shadow on my lcd monitor

OculusScreenshot1659026546.JPG

Light reflections are great - see how the light is reflected on the floor

Devs just confirmed that the blurry temporal antialiasing is gone with Red Matter 2:

"This time around we have created the content with MSAA in mind, and the image is as crisp as it could possibly be. It looks amazing with the Index!"

Sounds awesome! 🙂

This is actually Quest 2! The PC version will look even better!👌😃

No, this is PCVR, not Quest 2 Standalone - images taken from SteamVR:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2081470/Red_Matter_2/

The trailer always was PCVR, check out the very detailed textures - at least both RoadToVR and I agreed that the trailer newer was Quest 2 standalone:

"[...] the game’s announcement trailer (below) is probably captured on PC"

Source: https://www.roadtovr.com/red-matter-2-meta-quest-announcement-gameplay-trailer/

- And devs have confirmed that the trailer was recorded using PC:

(see VerticalRobot replying to RidgeMinecraft)

It's normal for devs to use the best-looking version for trailers and screenshots.

Fun thing - some dude asked how Red Matter 2 graphics quality compares to Alyx 😄 Devs replied:

"In terms of graphical quality, comparing the game to Half-Life Alyx is such a tall order, we are after all a small team. But I'd lie if I didn't say we had Alyx as our north star for sure.
Personally, I believe the game looks like a few others on Steam. The textures are high res, the picture quality is very crisp with MSAA. At the same time, the game is able to run very well. So you will be able to crank up the resolution and framerate higher than your usual VR game.
I don't think you will be disappointed with the graphical quality. But don't take our word for it, you can always wait for the reviews to roll in :D"

Loved Red Matter 1, not waiting for reviews for the sequel, I'd buy it in an instant - but Steam does grant me 2 hours of testing if something should be wrong 😉

Ok, first comparison of Q2 vs PCVR;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqNRRtDgytE

While the Q2 version looks great, the PCVR version looks like a very Lazy port (some might call it Questified, lol!). I would have expected much better textures and dynamic lighting/shadows. Still, good to see developers getting the best out of the Q2.

I feel bad for Q1 users and really think that developers should be able to offer Q1 users lower graphics settings so that they can also play this.
