Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE - today more awesome than ever! On sale for about $10 until May 16 2022!

The game launched in 2017:

Unfortunately it's more or less a port of the 2D version meaning it's very demanding for the gpu, especially using in-game Ultra settings. But with the current high-end gpus, the game is finally becoming playable in the most awesome way! Not sure you'll want anything slower than a RTX 3080 for this game:

I took a few shots:

Environments are not that far form Alyx quality - but textures are not high-res

Looks like the Russians paid a visit...

Few VR games have nicer palm trees - and leaves - in solid 90 fps!

A giant spaceship demolishes a building - all in realtime

Check out the stones on the ground - this is high-poly graphics, looks kinda tessellated, but not sure that it is...

Realtime shadows - check out the detailed palm tree shadow on the ground

Light effects - yellow poisonous gas in the air reflects sunlight and shadow - looks awesome

Check out this amazing light!

If you think opponents look dated, try the new VR game Fracked! 😉

Realtime shadows - see the detailed shadows cast by the foot?

A dead opponent - but he looks kinda awesome for a game originally from 2011!

A giant scorpion-monster arriving...

Did I mention that the light can be so bright it's almost blinding?

Finally some shots by the devs - and the game really looks like this if you got a high-end gpu:

Few VR games have more impressive water than Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE

After trying several (enhanced) ports from very low-end systems like PSVR or Quest, it was really a great moment playing some real PCVR again. Now, Serious Sam 3 is a very old game from 2011, but devs made sure that the engine packed so many features that the game would require much gpu power for many years to come. Especially the ambient occlusions (can be set to full or half quality) really pull some teeth, lol.  Using Ultra graphics levels means you're adding 4xMSAA and several very demanding rendering effects.

Looks like some dude failed the anger management class, sigh...

I'm using Index res 400% for the game - but had to reduce VR res in-game to 50% to get solid 90 fps - I guess that means I'm effectively using Index res 200%? 🤔 😁 I think I disabled ambient occlusions too - high-res and solid 90 fps are more important than ambient occlusions for this game.

It's better to burn out than to fade away

Walking through a street in Serious Sam 3 VR, and then seeing some giant monster walking by without noticing me, was a truly grand VR moment - kinda felt real. Haven't had that sensation for long in VR. Even if Serious Sam 3 is dated, it looks so much better than the average junk content we mostly get in VR these days - and if devs can make a VR port of a full-blooded 2D game like this, I really hope other devs will consider doing the same. Porting real 2D games like this could provide the most awesome high-end VR content with minimal effort from devs (I guess F1 2022 devs just did that).

It's clobbering time!

Can't wait to jump in later today 😄

Textures could be better but get the job done - spaceships do look great
